I subscribe to Patrick Sullivan's take on mill decks, which is that because they're often quite bad they're great for the new player experience. New players have a visceral reaction to mill, both doing it and having it done to them. The milling party feels like they're doing something sneaky and devilish; they feel crafty. Seeing all those cards go to the garbage is fun, win or lose. They feel like they're getting away with something. The milled party feels outrage - they haven't learned that cards in deck don't exist until you draw them, so this often ineffectual attack has so much emotional weight. When they beat the mill player - and they likely will, as mill is often weak by design - they get the feeling of beating a villain. They almost died! Look how many cards they lost! He also says that even good players fall victim to the emotional strain of being milled. High level play can often have incidental mill as a part of a control deck's strategy - stuff like Nephalia Drownyard in Innistrad - as a way of closing out games. Its nickname tells the whole story: "Nephalia Frownyard." From a play design perspective, its one of those few things that put you and your character in the same situation. Mill often signifies a grinding away of sanity, and it can be hard to not feel like you're going insane when you're watching your deck get thinner and thinner and thinner.

It’s really refreshing to Christian entertainment done well. So often people with very good intentions trying to make their product educational end up neglecting the entertainment aspect. Banding in this game not only makes sense as a gameplay mechanic considering the rules of the game but also as an educational tool to help players learn to build mental connections between the various cards and their figures they represent to better understand them thematically. Clever!

I dunno dude, the planes TCG seemed way less chaotic and less like a fever dream compared to Redemption layout, I really disagree: 1- The name of the card is so not important, especially if the names HAVE TO be stupid and you and the opponent will refer to them as "that card" anyway, pointing with the finger. 2- The attack and defense even if distant, they are in a proper color different from the background, and readable, even if small (thanks to the colors) 3- The card text, even if a bit harder to read, it seems that it's not that dramatic. Yes, the flavor text was not italic, which is the biggest crime imho, but the rest isn't that bad, if it manages to fit everything in one area. Yugioh card is a culprit as bad or even worse probably (without even talking about original layout in OCG) Meanwhile, Redemption has: 1- Color background that has no meaning, I think it's a big sin, such an important part of the card and it adds confusion more than helping 2- Damage and Health seem like a minor, less important thing. Yes, it's similar to MTG, yes, it's on the main diagonal of readability, but I think it should absolutely have been disjointed by the card type. What does it mean I have 10/10 Snakes or 6/4 Skulls? They are separate concepts, they should be separate boxes. 3- You say that the color inside that aforementioned box is important, but because it is, it shouldn't be relegated to that small box, especially when the rest of the colors of the card has a random color and no meaning. Again, I think the background colors is the biggest culprit here, even worse than a camo background that makes it a bit harder to read 4- Lastly, if the words of the effects are important because they can be called by other cards, they should have been marked better as Keywords. In the planes TCG card you show, it's very clear what's a keyword, even if it's harder to read. Here, does every word count for the effect of being called? Do only keywords like "Ruth" count? Yes, designers can be wary of this and use only SOME words that are by nature more specific and less generic (and not words that can be used in other contexts) but it still could be better presented imho. Also, by your explanation it's not clear if flavor text counts or not, I imagine not intuitively, but "Ruth" it's also present in the flavor text of the example card with "Ruth" in the effect you showed.

If you tell me that the symbols of bullets and shields on the Planes TCG cards are hard to comprehend, I laugh at you and I ask you what does a black skull on my MTG card means, if I don't know what the concept of mana is (AND it's not on the explanation of what lands do, remember that)

I liked them when they were firstborn when the main line range were all primaris so it made them special but the newest one is just primaris but you wouldn't be able to tell them apart from the normal kits. I'd personally prefer if they made more series for other chapters and chaos legions like thousand suns, iron warriors, space wolf's, dark angles, ultra marines and more like what they did for the death guard.

They've also been adding lore stuff to their website, including a free comic you can read. Even the prize money has been taken away, and ban-lists have been effective and include written communication from the team. They're still behind, but improvements are being made.

I have a question about something that is very controversial among some circles--do you think there is any room for AI generated assets for things like art in card games? More specifically, do you think it could be accepted as a temporary measure for getting a game off the ground? As you pointed out, art is often costly, either in the form of time (to develop the talent yourself) or money for commissions. Tons of people feel like AI generated art is some huge awful sin to commit for a game, and I definitely understand the thought behind that--most people would rather hold something in their hands that they know a human-hand touched. (Although, you also get into some arguments from the more zealous who try to claim it as "stealing" or copyright infringement.) As someone who is attempting to create a couple of card games with a friend and who doesn't have a wealth of time or money to throw at those things which neither of us has the talent to do ourselves, I (and he) feel like AI generated assets would be really useful as a temporary crutch to simply provide an accessible means for the game to see the light of day. Eventually we would love to hire artists and probably even revisit/reprint/update old cards with analog art. Using AI assets, however, would lower the financial barrier and risk--the last thing we (or anyone) would want to do is take out loans for a ton of money to throw at the creation of a game that then flops. Simply put, AI assets could minimize financial risk in the launching of a new project. If the game is liked and does well, the profits could then be used to hire real artists in the future, but without even knowing if people will like and buy the game AI assets are an enticing alternative to going deep into debt. However, I guess I see this from a "game/player first" perspective--I absolutely love the art of TCGs and it's a huge part of the appeal, but to me, the gameplay of a game takes center-stage. In that capacity, I would hope people could look past certain components being AI generated in the short-term and appreciate that the game itself still has a very real, very human touch with human effort put into its creation. I fear that's an idealistic, hope, and not necessarily a realistic one. It might also be worth noting that since my friend is a programmer and neither of us have any business or logistics experience whatsoever, we're planning to launch the games digitally first with potential plans for a physical product in the future if the game is successful. In that capacity, we could also wait until we are able to hire artists to launch anything physical, and updating AI assets with artist-created ones could be as simple as a patch or update to the game. To me, that feels similar to what a lot of indie developers do when they use free or very cheap assets-packs but then go back and replace those stock assets with custom ones as time and resources allow. I've considered that licensing art could solve many of these problems, and that's what the majority of industries do. However, TCGs are an anomaly in that commissions have long been the standard practice. Artists complain about this because it limits their ability to generate revenue from their art, buuuuut I've noticed it's kind of a thing where they'd like to have their cake and eat it, too. Some complain about it as it relates to huge, well-known and established projects like MtG; working under a license for those games could exponentially increase their earnings, and the general sentiment is that companies are cutting artists out of the loop and into a bad deal when they refuse to license. However, from my experience, when I approach artists and ask if they'd consider working under a license for a project for a new game that isn't established yet, almost all of them express that they would do it under commission but not license, because a commission is less of a risk and gives them their money up-front regardless of the success or failure of the project. I care about compensating any artist fairly for their time, though this kind of attitude and double-standard kind of makes me have less sympathy when they complain about the use of AI assets "replacing" artists. If you've read all of this, then I'm very grateful. Do you have any strong thoughts or opinions on this?

I've been watching these videos because I stumbled across them and am attempting to make a card game (or two) with a good buddy of mine! I don't plan to use unmixable attributes, however I'm curious to know how (or even if) the existence and continued growth and success of Flesh and Blood has changed your views on this? I do agree that generally speaking, as a design, it is extremely restricting and poses a lot of challenges to overcome, but somehow FaB has seemed to not only circumvent and overcome these challenges, but it's like it hasn't really even been affected by them at all. Like, to the extent that they can release an entire new set with (nearly) sole support for a single class--Mechanologist in Bright Lights--and get away with it. That's not to say it hasn't caused some issues at all. Brutes and Rangers for the longest time seemed like they were getting the shaft and never going to be good, but eventually that changed and now they're considered extremely strong. Conversely, Runeblades were extremely prominent in almost all of the metas for a really long time and are now not terribly strong anymore. Someone might think that this would cause players of those decks to get frustrated and leave the game, but I haven't really noticed that attitude either locally or online. Players whose favorite class was Brute would often simply sigh and say, "yeah, it'd be cool if Brute got support," then they'd either pull out another class's deck because they also enjoyed playing that character, or they'd pull out a Brute deck and play it anyway. I almost wonder if Vanguard's problem might also have been that the clans themselves didn't really.... do enough to set themselves apart from other clans. I only played at the very beginning of the game years ago--and frankly I loved the gameplay--but I very quickly began to realize that clans seemed to share *most* of their relevant gameplay mechanics (albeit as differently named cards that belonged to their specific clan) and the differences between clans seemed to be a minor gimmick at best that only slightly changed the flavor of the deck you were playing. For instance, Heal and Critical triggers were the best triggers, so every deck ran the respective four heal trigger cards and 12 critical triggers, and those cards were nearly identical in terms of power and function. There were also "power" benchmarks--thresholds of strength which marked the "highest" you could get at a certain stage and which would avoid the next step-down threshold gaining enough strength off of a trigger to overcome it. Likewise, a lot of these cards were functionally identical in decks, like the staple Stage 2 10,000 power cards (again, back then--power creep has likely changed this). Lastly, the Perfect Guard cards that every deck also wanted four copies of. Simply put, building a new deck didn't ever really feel much like building a new deck... it felt like rebuilding a deck you already had, only with minor differences in its flavor. Decks that truly felt unique from other decks--like Oracle Think Tank's Tsukuyomi--were extremely few and far between. I wonder if this might also, then, contribute to FaB's success despite absolutely committing this "deadly sin" whereas Vanguard struggles a bit more with it; not only does each class play in ways almost entirely unique to themselves, but even characters within those classes tend to build vastly different decks with diverse strategies from one another. It also probably helps that FaB doesn't have 20+ classes, although with the addition of Talents it almost might as well, and who knows how often they might add a new class over time.
