Now that you're caught up on the main series (I disagreed with you on quite a bit, but your takes were interesting, and I listened to the whole REFOID series driving for work over a month), when are you doing a main-line ranked video?
38:19 Why do you keep complaining about Bravely Default being in this game... And not Octopath Traveller? Bias too much? I love the Bravely Default tracks in these games in Curtain Call and in this one, and they are pretty much "That of the Name", "The Evil wings" and "The Serpent That Devours The Ground" being basically the best.
Octopath could’ve been used in that example too, I just picked Bravely Default. The point isn’t that I dislike those games, the point is that this is still a Final Fantasy game and I would prefer if they included more of the iconic missing songs rather than some from completely different series.
I love this game. It was a huge time sinker at the time and an introduction to many characters from older games that i had not yet played. It is also the greatest example of using the strengh of FF´s long history. It had great gameplay while keeping the rpgs roots, it still gave us a serviceable story, respected the original characters. Great product, great game, great memories.
I was interested and bought NT (years after having experienced Dissidia on PSP when another kid brought it on a school trip), but boy was this a disappointment. If they had at least kept singleplayer like in that old game, I would have spent a good bit of time with it, but the multiplayer was laggy hell after laggy hell with only a few decent matches in between.
Yeah i played the game before all the DLC came out, so i capuldnt imagine playing it after that. Definitely sounds like a lot to get used to. Also i can say as a DFFOO fan, i love how Jack in that game is jiat like, yall suck at being the warriors of light. Now sit back and warch me solo every final bosss in the franchise lol
How Bevelle was able made fayths out of Al Bhed? The novel only stated that they were hunted down and forced to become fayth. It's established that fayth are people who gave their souls willingly, why those Al Bhed's fayth didn't become monsters considering their souls are hateful Tidus being given the ability to teleport anywhere is one of the most ridiculous parts of the novel, how is that possible according to the laws of Spira's universe? Where was this power the whole 1000 years of people dying and sacrificing themselves? The events of the novel sure happned conveniently. For a 1000 years Ifahnal didn't bother to use his super sayan summoning prowess but for some reason he did to summon a whole island the same day Tidus was brought back.. Another shady fella named Bria happened to come to Besaid only a month before the beginning of the novel, who met Tidus upon his return, and who also had connection to Ifahnal. AND for some an explicable reason the Fahrenheit (no not the Celsius) broke down and all radios stopped functioning, and a violent storm happened :/ I bet Nojima's outline of the novel was 'a ball blows up Tidus' then he proceeded to write stuff that led to that bit
It's most baffling how these balls just appear out of nowhere everytime and detonate in the most convenient fashion. There's also no consistency about their damage's scale, when first introduced Valm was on a higher location/room with stairs but when the ball detonated outside Valm fell off the stairs, later the fighter girl got blown up when the ball touched her foot, Tidus and Yuna were near each other when Tidus got hit with the ball and bent to catch it, only Tidus was blown up while Yuna was thrown away from the impact. On the boat with Ifahnal the ball detonated on his feet but neither Yuna nor Bria, nor the boat for that matter, suffered any damage despite them being in proximity
Man, thank you for this video. I've been trying to emotionally process 2.5 and "WILL" after just beating and adoring (and crying at) X / X-2. For me, 2.5 and WILL are attempting to show us the consequences of power relative to it all, and the journey into maturity. I really want to go into detail but honestly I'd be here all day. Simply put I feel like the writer(s) for 10 have the potential for an absolute masterpiece of heartbreaking proportions.. I can see it, they want to tell a very "real" romance, involved with the incredibly intense "realness" of the setting, and they have been telling that story slowly in the first 2.. Its just a shame that 2.5 and WILL were so hap hazzard that its giving me the same knot in my stomach that Evangelion did. The sex was off putting and probably could have been away with /handled better, but in retrospect I have to ask, if the plot were to continue, was it not inevitable? I know its possible to tell an excellent story without it, but we have to face the reality of the writing in the games, sex was in the formula somewhere, and I think they just struggled (for a myraid of factors) to execute the topic well. IDK im still toiling with my emotions on this one -- the shear emotional devastation I felt from X, to the fun respite that X-2 was.. but I again I have to thank you for this, it was enlightening, and its so important that it exists, It will be time to binge your videos so that I can engage with whats to come. Till then, be well! P.S: Its dumb but the thing that really killed my immersion with this games plot and story was honestly Lulu showing no signs of her imminent childbirth, were the devs afraid? Lazy? Uhg! YRP even addressed it! How silly!
I just found out tonight that they used a lot of in development story beats from Chrono Break in this game since that game never got fully made beyond planning stage. That explains a lot of the anime feeling. Also hearing that the director from the previous Chrono series worked on this, it all makes sense.

Part of the cause behind all this is that Kazushige Nojima, the screenwriter for FFX and its sequels, was also the screenwriter for FF7 and its associated metastasis. (This is why, for example, you have the whole side plot in X-2 where a kid named Shinra wants to tap the immeasurable power of the Lifestr--*ahem*--Farplane and create a city that never sleeps. Nojima is on record stating that X-2 could be a far-distant prequel to 7, after they travel to another planet.) And just like 7+ has the inescapable Sephiroth, Nojima decided that X+ needed its own recurring villain and decided on Sin. Hence the whole "Sin gets Beckoned" thing in Will, because everything has to go back to Midgar eventually.

No one else in the comments is bringing this up, so I gotta say: Your personal story about watching Fight Club with friends for the first time made me legitimately extremely angry. I was second-hand mad to the point I wanted to time travel, in your shoes, and just beat the living hell out of your friend mid-movie. You have the patience of a saint. I hope that you and some of your other friends who painfully sat through that experience together are able to recollect and laugh about it now, haha
Jack Garland became one of my most favorite Video Game characters and i hope to see him as a guest character in other games or even FF again. If i can't get Tifa in Tekken, i want Jacl, interruüting and skipping my enemies intros :D
I believe FFIV is one of the most popular FFs in Japan, which is why they are always throwing it into everything. But awesome video! As someone who never got into FFXIV due to not having the time but also always kind of intrigued by it, it was great getting to experience it through your videos, especially because you gave us a look at the social aspect which I feel not enough FFXIV videos do. And look I have caught up on REFFOID before the Rebirth video! I am super excited for it as I really loved Rebirth and can’t wait for your take on it! Thanks as always Tom!
The reason why the game is sold in chapters and why The After Years is episodic is because many Japanese mobile phones (pre-iOS) were very small or were sold in parts. That's also what happened with the original version of Kingdom Hearts coded. BTW There is an unofficial source port of Final Fantasy Dimensions (as well as III, IV, After Years, and V; among many other non-FF games) made for PS Vita. You do need the original APK for the Android version as well as a jailbroken Vita for that. And it controls like the console games on Vita.
I used play this game on my iPod Nano back in middle school and highschool. So many hours after I was supposed to be asleep on that tiny tiny screen. I'm probably one of the few with fond memories of this game, thanks for bringing this back to mind 🥰
Bro... bro, let me say, you are NOT wrong. I had the exact same experience. But let me also say, you gotta try out Shining Force for the Sega Genesis. It's bright, whimsical, charming, still hard, but there's no perma-death. That is such a game-changer and makes it so much better than all these other hard-core SRPGs. My personal rationalization of why this game is so over-hyped, is that it was a LOT of gamer's first exposure to the genre, as there were very few console-SRPGs brought over from Japan before this one.

Great review! Your biggest two complaints is both on your part though. 1. If you press select on the PS1 controller you get interactions guide on the map so you can se where you can climb and every door. 2. If you use up and down on the analog control you always go up and down in the list when you try to target your self or the enemy, the other thing happens when you use left or right which doesn't makes sense. :)

Dawntrail was soured for me since i planned to play it with my gf, but..then her pc had issues and crashed and we...just agreed i'd play it on my own ...it was fine...i liked all the dungeons and trials, story was...fine....just kinda..left me empty
49:55 There have been a bunch of those "tiny details" hinting at stuff to come already. More long term stuff, like having the azem symbol appear on the crystal that's able to bridge shards and looks like a piece of auracite straight from ultima, and short term stuff like the supposed large serpent slumbering at the bottom of the giant rift which was ignored throughout the entire expansion and just mentioned in two minor pieces of dialogue. They definitely seem to be building to some stuff but we'll have to wait and see where they actually go with all of that. Just in general for people deep into this game's lore there's been a ton of stuff to speculate on
Yes. They actually need to nerf tanks. Just the fact that the final boss of the expansion usually boils down to everyone except the two tanks dying within the first few minutes and the two tanks then just doing the entire fight on their own is fking annoying
What a great review! I laughed so much at seeing some of those stream memories play out again in the video. While Dawntrail is certainly not my favorite story in XIV, hearing more positive insight into it is great after how much negativity and scrutiny it's undergone since launch. I definitely look forward to the reunion of the REFFOID crew in 2 or so years; I'll for sure still be playing XIV then. Just one more game to go, I can't wait to see what's in store for that review and what will come afterward.
So back when 16-Bit FF Games were coming out, it was a "less is more" approach to these villains. We weren't supposed to understand them, they were meant to be almost a force of nature. Humanizing Zemus or X-Death just wouldn't have worked that well.
They have the greatest ip, yet cant design a really good system. The only way for you to get stronger and to reach out a higher damage is to get a copy of weapon, which only can be trade with gems and money and saving tiny little bit gems day by day. Honestly there is no options for you to put effort growing your power but to wait n save gems. Seriously bad game design. They should have make the grinding meaningful. Like everyday grind some materials that can upgrade stats or power. Or extras super strong items drops from bosses. Complex grind and upgrade system. "Make the daily grinding meaningful and fun" Is the core and lore of every game should be.
