This is the same system that started my love for gaming. I never had the original 2600 but my grandma bought me this one in like 86 or 87 or so and I still remember the fun I had.
I think they were trying to appeal to nostalgia but t wasn’t a very good move. Atari was struggling and the 7800 failed because it wasn’t as good as nes or master system. Also it’s sad they only had boys in the ad. Ignoring a whole gender is never smart. Girls game too. I feel bad for any kid who got this from their parents instead of nes.
The Atari 2600 Jr. retailed for $49.99. It was the same hardware, but externally made to look like the 7800. I remember seeing this commercial in the late 80s.

I regret not buying one when they were available. Me and my bros sold our old nes with the intention of purchasing this one. However at the time we liked having money (that was eventually spent on other stuff anyway). I did get a used system off eBay many years later. Then again sold it. I still kinda want one just to have. 😜
I guess the reason why it costed like $49.99 was bcuz the cost of the console used cheap components inside and RF output only, like if the NES had RGB/S-VIDEO it would cost like $120 USD in it's time

When this commercial aired I was in the former Nintendo camp having strayed to the Sega Genesis. I didn’t understand why anyone would want to buy the outdated NES in 1994. Looking back it was a great marketing idea. Cheap price point and a huge library of games as well as the ability for Nintendo to try to continue to make money off of old software. The console itself is questionable however. I own both my original toaster from 1990 and a top loader I picked up years later. If you boil the original 72 pin connector every few years (please never replace an original 72 pin connector with a cheap aftermarket one) the toaster is immensely superior to the stripped down top loader.
