I could tell which was which because I've been binge watching microphone videos. The SM7B has a stronger mid-range and catches a bit more detail but it seems that a little extra EQ work could even that out. However, there is no way it's worth an extra $300 (plus an extra $150-250 for a cloud lifter), which is why I bought an SM57. If I were to do professional voice over, I would probably skip past the SM7B and go for the Electro Voice RE20. It's a bit more expensive ($500?) but the improvement is substantial and it makes a beautiful sound.
before processing i thought sm57 is microphone two but after processing i was 100% sure that microphone two is sm7b. I use sm57 to record my vocals and im pretty familiar with how it sounds after processing and this video confirmed my thoughts why i need sm7b to record vocals. My native language has huge sibilances and sm57 is just too sharp for them imo. With sm7b I wont lose my mind while using deesser.
Sm57 is brighter and due to its smaller capsule captures shaper sounds with precision and more clarity and the sm7b is smoother. Hard to tell tho and worth an extra $300??? Btw 98% of people wont care if you use a sm7b or not.
I actually had my answers reversed from the correct ones. I currently own a SM57. In the early future, there's a chance I'm going to have to record my friends vocals. This really helped me decide to stick with the SM57
Lol, Antony Price suits ❤ DD set so many fashion trends in the 80's 👔Yes, Sri Lanka is the location. Their "Save a Prayer" video was also shot in Sri Lanka & gives us even more of the countrys' beauty ❤

So prob +80% of listeners out there is going to listen to your podcast or video on a pair of Apple Airpods, or similar quality headphones. Or, straight out of their laptop or TV. Will they hear the difference? No way! It all comes down to what look you prefer, and the SM7B looks more pro, given that most popular podcasts use them. But, if you're just starting out and/or have a limited total budget, go for the SM57, I say. If it's good enough for POTUS, it's good enough for you. BTW, just happened to see a snippet from recent podcast with Tiff Hadish and Paris H and they seemed to be using SM58's. Sounded great but different look. Thanks for the vid!
Very helpful 👍 How effective is this for removing mouth sounds (saliva, clicks, smacks, etc.)? Assume we still should use pop filter and manually remove still..
I've never seen this video. It's 2 years old. And I already know. I don't need to watch nor listen to this video. Because this guy has it right. By that I mean. He's got that SM-57 that's only $100. And he's got the SM-7B that lists at $350. But you're going to hear no difference. No real difference at all. And why is that? What this gentleman has so intelligently done. Was to put the SHURE, optional, oversized, plump, obese, supersized, Great Foam Pop Filter. Bigger than you see, anybody else using. On their, SM-57's. And so what that oversized gray foam pop filter accomplishes. It's going to insurer. That if you put your lips. Right up to that foam pop filter. It's going to sound virtually identical to the SM-7B. This is because. They both use the same microphone cartridge capsule. In both the 57 and the 7B. The same capsule. The difference arises. Of how close you can get. To the diaphragm of the SM-7B. And that is about 2-3 inches away. At the minimum. And so the whole point of this large foam pop filter on the 57. Is to position the diaphragm of the microphone. To be approximately 2-3 inches away from your lips. Even if they are touching the gray foam pop filter. You are still buying yourself an additional 2-3 inches of distance from the diaphragm. Nobody fully understands or comprehends, just what Proximity Effect, sounds like? Well? It sounds like nondescript mud. From Proximity Effect. And that,, 2-3 inches. Provides for a vastly different quality of sound. And not so much Proximity Effect. That makes everything muddy sounding. And so a copious amount of,, relatively aggressive and extreme high pass filtering needs to be used, i.e., turning down the low frequencies below 300 Hz with a sharp cut off. As I'm sure we all know what…… Some people…… Would say. Visit Gesundheit. RemyRAD
I could tell, but i am also an audio engineer. SM57 is a beast but the grille rattle is a dealbreaker nobody talks about. Beta series solves that and also rejects feedback better.
Hi, I want to record my written poetry professionally. Suggest me a good audio interface and microphone. But my room is not sound proof. The sound from outside comes inside our room. If I use Audio Technica 2035 mic and Shuru SM 58, then what will be the difference between the two? And which audio interface would be better for ShureSM 58. In which there is no noise and the quality is also good at the time of recording.
Great video. I had the SM57 at one point after seeing such videos with content creators swearing the difference wasn't worth the money but for the sharpness of the audio alone I returned the SM57 and for awhile was using the SM58 I purchased out of need soon after (which I'm not the biggest fan of sonically). Recently I took a chance and got the SM7B for a good price on marketplace and was surprised at how much I liked the sound compared to the other two. Once I purchased my fethead it increased my enjoyment of using the mic not to mention the quality of the sound by my ability to reduce it picking up room noise. It really is worth the difference in price for my usage. Also to note, I use my mic for voiceover and rap. As a rapper I like to hear myself while I'm over the beat. The SM7B when paired with the fethead gives me the feedback I always listen for even outperforming many condenser mics in real time recording pleasure. I know the end sound is what most people consider when comparing mics but I think there's something to be said about the energy and excitement a microphone can bring out of the artist with its presence. Just my 2 abe links.
mic one was much better to my ears, but before the processing. I'm figuring out my sm57. I love the sm7b so much, but everyone has it and its getting cringe.
With good headphones on it was pretty clear, that the second mic was the sm7b in direct comparison. After the processing? Not a chance to identify the mic. In direct comparison the brighter tone of the sm57 always wins. But: The sm7b is still the preferred one to listen to for extended periods of time. The slightly muffled sound is nicer to listen to. Worth the higher price? Before processing, maybe. After processing, no. If you know how to use an EQ it is not worth the difference. BUT if you feel "better" and more "pro" with a sm7b use it. I think that feeling alone will change your recordings more than the "technical details".
Sir, I am beginner. I want to record my written poetry professionally. In which my line will go in high tone and will also come in low tone. Tell me such dynamic mic and audio interface. So that I can record and mix later. My room is not sound proof. My total budget is $300. But a shopkeeper told me that you cannot do recording with dynamic mic. Please tell me what should I do. Tell me such a mic and audio interface that I will not regret after buying. If I Buy : AUDIENT ID4 + SHURE SM58 + SHURU 240 HEADPHONES = Will this setup be good or not?
The SM57 had a very slight hiss while you were talking, but my volume was up pretty high; at more reasonable levels, it probably isn't noticable. The SM7B seemed to pretty nuch give that warm tone while talking and displace the hiss. Worth the $400 price tag, though? Not in my opinion.
But the question remains, is the difference worth $300? The SM57 is a road warrior of the 1st degree. I will take a page from my audiophile dad's playbook. He use to always remind my brother and I, when compare shopping for gear: "Ok fellas, but does device A sound that many dollars better than device B?" He would go on to conclude, "at some point a human can't hear that well. You must find that threshold and then make your decision." Advantage SM57.
Bottom line: the $300 difference is not justifiable for most applications. Spend the money you save on other things to help your broadcasts. Great report, Let's Read Reddit!
fuck that stock footage is annoying im getting angry just seeing that shit murderous rage reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Sm57 lot of noise floor not taking into account. Sm7b have a present boost and noise floor removal. They both dynamic mic that’s where the likeness end. I buy sm7b simply because the king Micheal Jackson use it in Scream.
Could definitely tell, mic 2 sounded a little cleaner and better but not by much. Most folks aren't listening on like super crazy hi end headphones most will be on earbuds or cell speakers. So ya I don't think it's worth the extra money
This video saved me from falling for a vicious marketing tactic. Going to put my foolish pride aside and go with the SM57 for now, and if things go smoothly for my podcast then I’ll upgrade. This video saved me, thank you!
I mentined this in another post. The mic I used in the first part of the video was the camera microphone. Having a solid sound booth is worth more than the mic imho.
In my experience, the SM7B is darker and tighter. Because of the thicker foam, it tends to reduce everything above 5khz. It also tends to be more isolating, with a tighter pickup pattern that rejects room tone and background noise very well. By comparison, the 57 sounds brighter and clearer. It also sounds more open, capturing more of the surrounding space. Given what each was designed for, I would say that tracks very well! The SM57 was designed with a well-treated studio in mind, where you can record multiple takes and perfect the sound. Meanwhile, the SM7B was designed with radio broadcast in mind, offering better isolation, reduction of transients, and extensive plosive protection. I would also argue that the form factor of the SM7B is more “inviting” for inexperienced speakers; just talk into the flat end and don't worry about it!
Nicely made video and a solid comparison! Good job! As someone who works in audio, I personally could tell the difference, but to most people the difference probably would be subtle at best. Many people seem to forget that these mics are based on the same capsule, and do have a lot of similarities.
