Before you buy the SM7B, you should watch this first and decide if you really need to buy it. Don't get me wrong, I love my SM7B, and it's my go to for pretty much everything. And let's face it, it's damn sexy! But is it 300 dollars more sexy?
Let me know what you think of the comparison! I use my SM7B without the foam wind screen to get better dynamic range, and used the large foam to make the comparison fair.

With how similar they are after processing, I'm gonna grab the SM57. I actually liked the slightly brighter tone it had. The SM7B sounded more muffled.

The SM7B has that additional bass/boominess that is easy to pick when you know to listen for it. It gives it that classic but subtle "podcast sound" In some circumstances where there' a need to EQ the vocals you'd bring that bass down and they would sound almost identical. The SM57 sounds a lot more present in this comparison.

It seems that sm57 sounded more clear and open, especially in the high frequencies. It didn't choke and muddy up the transients like SM7B. What do you think? And yeah, SM7B has that artificial boominess in the 100-200 hz that is heard even on female voices when the setting is set to "flat".

The lesson here is that we hear what we want to hear. Let's face it. Going with the crowd makes us want the SM7B. The SM57 just isn't as sexy. Most people wouldn't know the difference unless you showed them. Good video.

Listening to a lot of comparison videos with the 2 and have come up with the following 1) SM7B just works great out of the box as a podcast mic 2) SM57 needs to be massaged with an A81WS or A2WS and Pop filter to tame the plosives 3) SM57 has more noise 4) You need more preamp gain to run the SM7B 5) You can make the SM57 sounds almost indistinguishable with the right EQ and Julian Kaus did this and it was crazy good
@CirclesOfMotion
@CirclesOfMotion 2 года назад
1) Dynamic microphones do not have self-noise. SM7B is less sensitive than SM57 therefore SM7B recordings have more noise than SM57 recordings. 2) A81WS or A2WS are pop filters, you do not need to add pop filter to pop filter. 3) You can make any decent microphone sound indistinguishable from SM7B.

First stage, mic 1 was more present, the high mid and highs were brighter. The processed version you could hear the slightly more mid forward profile of mic 1 (SM-57) and somewhat lighter 120Hz or so low-mid density was a bit cleaner on the SM-57 IMO as well. Great comparison and I happen to use an SM-57 with the small cone windscreen and it works better for my voice than more than a dozen other, much more expensive mics I have here on my shelf.

Oh hey, Anthony Earl! You, sir. Have the precise, extra-large, foam pop filter. For the SM-57 and/or 58's. I have been recommending to people, now. For decades. You got it right! You got the right one! If anything gets you closer to the SM-7. It is that much larger foam, pop filter for the SM-57! You have made my day, Anthony! You really have. It's those little things in life that make the difference. And no one seems to understand this. As I hate the blatty, bloated sound of, extreme Proximity Effect. And that little extra distance between microphone capsule diaphragm. And the front of that piece of foam. Makes all the difference in the world! So zowie wowie! You got the winning combination! $450, SM-7B sound. For about 150 bucks. Which affords one. To purchase an additional, three,, SM-58 & 57's. But so many dummies out there. Think the SM-7, is a higher quality microphone. It is not... It's the same crap. Different clothing. But of course when people have a hair,, up their ass.. And have an OCD problem with, requiring ulltimate quality garbage. They will always go for the SM-7B's. Because they think they are getting more for their money.. What a joke! Yeah I got two extra switches. Oh boy! As if the same filtering isn't available in, free software and desktop mixers. Sure. That's worth an extra, $350. Right? I am an, ultra,, practical, Audio Engineer.. And people don't like that about me. They also don't like the fact. I've made history. And acquired, 4 major music award nominations. Using mostly cheap microphones like the 57's. And recently selling off my, Neumann pairs of, original U-67's, early first release, U-87's, KM-86's. They really just aren't needed for, cheap live rock 'n' roll jobs. Though I will miss them dearly. Having personally owned them for, about 40 years. And have served their purpose. When we still made analog recordings. But with today's,, nonlinear access of,, linear digital recording. We don't have to try and cut through the tape sludge. As we once did. Many moons ago. Back in the 1970s from whence I originated. Into the industry. And after 50+ years in the business. All one really needs are those, SM-57's. And some foam balls. As everyone else has lost their own. And have no balls. Of foam. To use as a condom on their microphone. To prevent impregnating your microphone capsule with, spittle and slobber. I'll never forget when I got my first used, Neumann U-87. From a studio where it was kept plugged into, Phantom Power.. Virtually, 24/7. Even when not in use. And when I removed the wire basket. Over the capsule. The capsule looked like it was a miniature version of an, Everything Topping Pizza. Yuck! It was the grossest looking thing, ever! As those polarized diaphragms. Become nothing more than, Electrostatic Air Cleaners.. They not only attract, all slobber and bits of food.. Every day overnight. They clean the, studio air. Of all its dust and dirt. Making the studio air, much cleaner! So as to prevent quasi- no talent fake, pop rock, kind of singers. From ingesting too much dirt with every breath, they take. With every move, they make.. I'll be watching you. I know that last line, stung. Stung, sang that on one of his albums. I met Stung. Back in the early 1980s. When I almost purchased a, New England Digital,, "SinkLever", Music produuction system. But it was $250,000. So my colleague Mark and I, didn't invest in it. And glad we didn't. Because a few years later. Came the computeer and software revolution. We have today. For pennies on the dollaar. Such as Pro Fools, Cue Bass, Cruel Edit and other fabulous anomalies. Much of it provided free. With a, $150 USBee, Craputer Audio Inter-farce, De-vices. I love you, brother! You got it right! As I am in charge of, Calamity Control. And worked for some of the legendary, Pro-Audio, ManuFracturerers. Of course when I record, voiceovers. While I have equipped, cllients of mine. With said, DBX 286''s. I personally prefer using,, API or Neve,, preamps and EQ. Followed by a, 1176 FET, limiter. Then followed by a, Allison Research/Valet People, KEPEX-1 a.k.a. KEPEX-500. And thhat takes the voiceover sound. To the next level. But hey! If all that's available is a DBX 286? Those worrk just fine, also. And only I know the difference. As no one else really does. Though? I think you have added, much more aggressive processing. To get that extra, zing and sparkle. So pump it up! You'll be glad you did. Make it bigger than life! Pull out all the stops. Go for the full Monty. Has anybody told you you don't look like a, Anthony Earl? You look more like Tsingtao. A Chinese beer. But I digress. I went to the University of Marijuana.. Where I learnt. My worldly expertise. And how to write manuals. RemyRAD

A very nice comparison! Ready out of the box on quite good headphones, it is easy to say that the second microphone has a more "luxurious" sound (smoother sibilants, more bass and a bit of nice breath at the top, better balance overall). But I saw a video where you can make these microphones much more similar with the EQ. After such a procedure, when done correctly, the microphones become incredibly similar to each other! Listened very intentionally, the sm57 will still sound a bit harsher and bumpy, but they are almost indistinguishable. For 70 percent of users, I think that difference isn't worth the extra money. But if you don't want to spend extra time on EQ and have too much money, sm7b can be a good solution, and that could explains why it has become a standard on radio stations where there is no time to mess around.

Yes, it IS crazy. I read people buy the SM7b because they saw well known metal singers (lately Tatiana from Jinjer, sometimes Courtney from Spiritbox, and many, many before...) using it. ONE argument I read was, that some of them even use them like hand-helds (e.g. Tatiana Shmayluk for the upcoming album). Now - for ME the SM57 sounded even a LOT better in comparison. People seem to forget, that the SM7b may ONLY have an advantage if you do, what these ladies do - SCREAM and GROWL. There, the boomy low end does make sense. Sorry, but this is the SM7b for me, clearly hearable in your recordings. A bit boomy, maybe even a bit boxy. Dunno if I picked the right words, english is not my mother tongue. So, you can easily have a better mic for half the price, i.e. Sm57, the bigger windscreen, and if you want to go further, do a transformer removal mod or even add something like the cloudlifter (there are similar devices already available below 60 Euros, that you can plug directly into the mics XLR, e.g. at Thomann), which is an impedance converter that minimizes losses of dynamic mics over cable lenght ridicoulously and pertain the high end of the mics very, very well. And, if your mic pre's aren't top notch silent, they for sure can help reduce the amp noise due to feeding a much hotter signal, essentially works like a phantom powered condenser from the viewpoint of the preamp. With all this you can stay under the pricepoint of HALF a SM7b new! And have a BETTER mic IMHO, that is als better to handle for singers that want to have live/handheld feel to perform best. You might dial in a bit of "radio lows" with an EQ if you really, really need it, but for me the sound of the 57 is very preferable as is. Vloggers might want the "look" of the SM7, but if they want good audio, the 57 like presented in the video, seems a much better fit for many people's voices.
@imcrazedandconfused
@imcrazedandconfused 3 года назад
actually, if you really want it, you can equalize a 57 with windscreen to sound almost exactly like an SM7. Difference might be less than an old used SM7b against a new one. The capsule is actually the same, the rest of the mic differs very very little in non-linear effects. the linear differences can be eq'ed near to perfectly match.

I've never seen this video. It's 2 years old. And I already know. I don't need to watch nor listen to this video. Because this guy has it right. By that I mean. He's got that SM-57 that's only $100. And he's got the SM-7B that lists at $350. But you're going to hear no difference. No real difference at all. And why is that? What this gentleman has so intelligently done. Was to put the SHURE, optional, oversized, plump, obese, supersized, Great Foam Pop Filter. Bigger than you see, anybody else using. On their, SM-57's. And so what that oversized gray foam pop filter accomplishes. It's going to insurer. That if you put your lips. Right up to that foam pop filter. It's going to sound virtually identical to the SM-7B. This is because. They both use the same microphone cartridge capsule. In both the 57 and the 7B. The same capsule. The difference arises. Of how close you can get. To the diaphragm of the SM-7B. And that is about 2-3 inches away. At the minimum. And so the whole point of this large foam pop filter on the 57. Is to position the diaphragm of the microphone. To be approximately 2-3 inches away from your lips. Even if they are touching the gray foam pop filter. You are still buying yourself an additional 2-3 inches of distance from the diaphragm. Nobody fully understands or comprehends, just what Proximity Effect, sounds like? Well? It sounds like nondescript mud. From Proximity Effect. And that,, 2-3 inches. Provides for a vastly different quality of sound. And not so much Proximity Effect. That makes everything muddy sounding. And so a copious amount of,, relatively aggressive and extreme high pass filtering needs to be used, i.e., turning down the low frequencies below 300 Hz with a sharp cut off. As I'm sure we all know what…… Some people…… Would say. Visit Gesundheit. RemyRAD

Anthony, I digress, but I think you’ll be interested in this discovery. I was researching mics to record acoustic guitars and I stumbled upon an amazing mic for EVERYTHING-speaking, singing, micíng instruments, etc., thanks to its versatility. A shotgun mic with a screw on windscreen for handheld vocals as well as micing instruments. It sounded better than the most popular Neuman KM-184 for micíng acoustic guitars. Check out the Earthworks Audio SR-20. The company’s promo video of 2 guys using it for everything from singing to micing the drums to micing a horn to narrating the video. I can’t remember the last time a mic blew me away with it’s absolutely gorgeous sound and NO low frequency boominess. To my ears, the Shure SM57 came in 3rd place behind the KM-184 at micing acoustic guitars, ahead of some notable condenser mics. Mainly because it didn’t have the low end rumble and boominess of so many other mics. If you love the Shure SM7B, the Earthworks SR-20 will really hit the old GAS nerve, even at $599. 😉

The SM57 had a very slight hiss while you were talking, but my volume was up pretty high; at more reasonable levels, it probably isn't noticable. The SM7B seemed to pretty nuch give that warm tone while talking and displace the hiss. Worth the $400 price tag, though? Not in my opinion.

Great video. I had the SM57 at one point after seeing such videos with content creators swearing the difference wasn't worth the money but for the sharpness of the audio alone I returned the SM57 and for awhile was using the SM58 I purchased out of need soon after (which I'm not the biggest fan of sonically). Recently I took a chance and got the SM7B for a good price on marketplace and was surprised at how much I liked the sound compared to the other two. Once I purchased my fethead it increased my enjoyment of using the mic not to mention the quality of the sound by my ability to reduce it picking up room noise. It really is worth the difference in price for my usage. Also to note, I use my mic for voiceover and rap. As a rapper I like to hear myself while I'm over the beat. The SM7B when paired with the fethead gives me the feedback I always listen for even outperforming many condenser mics in real time recording pleasure. I know the end sound is what most people consider when comparing mics but I think there's something to be said about the energy and excitement a microphone can bring out of the artist with its presence. Just my 2 abe links.

Sir, I am beginner. I want to record my written poetry professionally. In which my line will go in high tone and will also come in low tone. Tell me such dynamic mic and audio interface. So that I can record and mix later. My room is not sound proof. My total budget is $300. But a shopkeeper told me that you cannot do recording with dynamic mic. Please tell me what should I do. Tell me such a mic and audio interface that I will not regret after buying. If I Buy : AUDIENT ID4 + SHURE SM58 + SHURU 240 HEADPHONES = Will this setup be good or not?

In my experience, the SM7B is darker and tighter. Because of the thicker foam, it tends to reduce everything above 5khz. It also tends to be more isolating, with a tighter pickup pattern that rejects room tone and background noise very well. By comparison, the 57 sounds brighter and clearer. It also sounds more open, capturing more of the surrounding space. Given what each was designed for, I would say that tracks very well! The SM57 was designed with a well-treated studio in mind, where you can record multiple takes and perfect the sound. Meanwhile, the SM7B was designed with radio broadcast in mind, offering better isolation, reduction of transients, and extensive plosive protection. I would also argue that the form factor of the SM7B is more “inviting” for inexperienced speakers; just talk into the flat end and don't worry about it!

before processing i thought sm57 is microphone two but after processing i was 100% sure that microphone two is sm7b. I use sm57 to record my vocals and im pretty familiar with how it sounds after processing and this video confirmed my thoughts why i need sm7b to record vocals. My native language has huge sibilances and sm57 is just too sharp for them imo. With sm7b I wont lose my mind while using deesser.

I've noticed more and more that the sm7b has a notch or a hole in the sound. It may not measure that way but it sounds that way to me. The 57 with the windscreen sounds more complete, forward, and real. The more I listen critically to the sm7b, the more I'm like "why?" lol... Theres the Michael Jackson lore but he supposedly used an Sm7, not an Sm7b, and that was for "one" album.... Maybe too the fact that Joe Rogan's podcast uses the Sm7b also makes it super popular... Then theres the mv7x, at $180, I'd say its a better mic than the sm7b, especially if you need 2 or 3. Marketing marketing marketing.... I like the tone of the 57 here more too, just that little bit more forward, and that helps me focus on the dialogue. Isn't that the purpose of "spoken word"? If a mic doesn't audibly hiss and it doesn't make me snarl up into a "yuck face" 😝, lol... Its a good and usable mic, then its whether its source is appropriate. Anyways... Thanks for the video sir!

If you boil it down the 7B is a prop. The subtle differences in audio characteristics aren't worth the $300 price difference, in my humble opinion. The budget-minded podcaster will be happy with a $50 Movo HM-M2. I like my SM57, but I also use the EV RE50B for interviews for its bulletproof performance, a $50 condenser for voice-over and an Audio-Technica shotgun for video. But you do you, boo.

@VirtuelleWeltenMitKhan
@VirtuelleWeltenMitKhan Год назад
With good headphones on it was pretty clear, that the second mic was the sm7b in direct comparison. After the processing? Not a chance to identify the mic. In direct comparison the brighter tone of the sm57 always wins. But: The sm7b is still the preferred one to listen to for extended periods of time. The slightly muffled sound is nicer to listen to. Worth the higher price? Before processing, maybe. After processing, no. If you know how to use an EQ it is not worth the difference. BUT if you feel "better" and more "pro" with a sm7b use it. I think that feeling alone will change your recordings more than the "technical details".

Yes, if you want a flat frequency response, then the SM7B is worth the extra $300. Especially if your singer has a high-pitched or thin voice. In your comparison, the SM57 had a curve that favored 2K and above to my ears. Not that it boosted highs, but rather it lacks lows and low mids. The clip of the President’s pair of mics really drove home how the clarity of the SM57 could make a voice stand out over a noisy background, which is not usually an issue for podcasters. YMMV

I noticed the first was the 57 since you had to push it a bit more, inducing a small amount of noise. The 57 seems like it has a bit more high end, having the 7B with a more rounded sound and slightly more bass. These differences are easily taken out if the recording is decent and with a bit of EQ. You can literally make them sound the same. The 57 wins since for a 3rd of the price it's a no brainer if all you have to do to make them sound similar is to EQ a bit which you would do anyway
@JustMamba

The sm7b actually needs more gain. I think the sm57 needs around 56 and the sm7b needs around 60 if I remember correctly. I think it's cuz the sm7b has better noise rejection and other factors.
