Welcome to my channel. Though conventionally trained in child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist, my current approach to health and healing is holistic (pertaining to the whole person), functional (addressing the root causes of illness) and environmental (such a mold toxicity and electromagnetic hypersensitivity)
On this channel, I share what I've learned/am learning though my work and the tools I use in my practice and for my own wellbeing. If you have or care about someone with a psychiatric condition, brain related symptoms or if you are wanting to optimize your brain health, this channel is intended for you.
This gene cluster theory immediately clicked for me it explains ALL my health issues as well as the health issues throught my entire family tree going back generations
I just found your channel Dr. Courtney, and I love it! Clear, calmly presented information. Ohhh, how I wish an average psychiatrist was even half as interested and learning as yourself... Thank you for your hard work and sharing your knowledge 💖
I prefer the research done by Morley Robbins where people are more likely to have a shortage of Copper and excess iron. His research also shows that Copper is essential to the proper functioning of the human body, and that iron is more likely the cause of problems.
high copper in pregnancy & post-partum is a sign of mobilization. So a sign for deficiency or the dislocation to the fetus for growth. Not a sign of overload, cause mist pregnant or post-partum women are not suddenly exposed to more environmental or dietary copper due to pregnancy. makes no sense
Hiw do you explain the copious amount of healing stories of people taking copper? And the fact that most people can excrete excess copper easily - which makes it basically non-toxic as opposed to iron which accumulates.
Hi. Thank you this question. I don't think everyone is susceptible to copper overload. Those who are likely have a predisposition related to a genetic variant impacting the functioning of metallothionein (which regulate copper) or have high toxicity that is overwhelming the functioning of MTs. We see these individuals with high copper get worse with additional copper, but that doesn't mean everyone gets worse from copper. There is a lot of biochemical diversity. This podcast is about those who are vulnerable to copper overload.
No doubt genetic disorders are a concern. But it is rare. People who take copper actuqlly often get worse as a healing crisis, cause copper availability can set in motion many detox enzymes and energy availability. So reports are: You get detox symptoms, but many health issues improve. Typical detox. Also shows that many actually NEED copper.
This is very supportive and it's made me realize how important changing my diet and lifestyle really is. I have almost all of those symptoms so I'm not a doctor and will not diagnose myself I have suspected Candida overgrowth for a while and have even gone on the carnivore diet and have noticed improvement. I will look on your site for resources on how to get rid of the Candida overgrowth . I feel like the availability of poor nutrient dense food extremely easily access to high carb high sugar foods can you Candida overgrowth is probably common amongst Americans more than we know.
Because copper naturally goes up (and would be expected to be high) during pregnancy, those of us who are Walsh-trained are not typically checking copper levels during pregnacy. Intersting about crones anxiety depression my friend has all that with adhd i have autism ADHD heds fybromyalgia symptoms so seams to me all routed in adhd or autism
Thank you for commenting on this. It does appear that many of the underlying root causes of brain related conditions (genetically acquired nutrient imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities around stress hormone pathways, inflammation, and oxidative stress) are the same underlying root causes of other chronic health conditions such as autoimmune conditions and fibromyalgia.
Thanks for getting more information about this condition out there. I tick nearly all the boxes for it, according to online questionnaires I've done. Have you noticed patients presenting symptoms of high inflammation with pyroluria? I often have scalp pain, despite an anti-inflammatory diet. I wonder if there was a connection between inflammation and pyrroles.
No smart meter electric company had to replace old one they said i would have to have a smart meter now i said ok ile wrap it in lead when i said that they replaced it with old type but is still the middle type maybe still make lead cover then told them we have autism have ti be careful
This is the first time I've heard anyone corroborate something I've always suspected about myself--that I may be responsible for throwing myself out of alignment as a means of coping with stress. This is what I hear you say in #8, although I'm not entirely sure that's what you meant. When I am in alignment after an adjustment, it is a precious thing indeed. I crave it. I feel a sense of peace that I can't even approximate otherwise. But also, noises are often too loud, emotions are too "loud", and I feel myself reflexively clenching those muscles in my neck trying to jerk myself out of alignment as a way of dampening those sensations. Of course, it could simply be the power of habit and the comfort that comes with it. NUCCA adjustments focus on the atlas and are quite wonderful, if you can find a practitioner in your area.
Thank you for sharing your experience with this. You describe it well. I think you may be referencing is when I'm discussing a vagal response to threat in which, instead of fight or flight, the body goes into "shut down" as a means of defense. The atlas appears to be involved in this response. Stanely Rosenberg describes this in his book, "Accessing the Power of the Vagus Nerve," and describes his experience triggering this response intentionally while teaching his students. His exercises in the book (especially the "basic exercise") are very helpful with resetting the atlas. Thank you again for commenting.
I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I hadn't considered LED lamp posts. If it would be helpful, recently I did a podcast on Smart Meters and what can be done to protect ourselves (it's the last video n the channel). Thank you for commenting.
@@courtneysnydermd-holisticp3072 Thanks. I live in a block of flats so although I have no smart meters my neighbours below do. I tried sneakily covering it with foil but I don't think it improved anything. This has to be deliberate.
Thank you for adding this. Yes. It's a big problem. My understanding is that a group is advocating for nonelectronic vehicles to stay available here in the US, especially for those who have EMF sensitivity. However, I think the EMF from electric cars impacts many others unknowingly.
@@courtneysnydermd-holisticp3072 yes it's been well known since electric fork lift trucks of 1960s were causing prostate cancer as a infant u could hear electric running threw wires in the walls it's quite common in autism I believe that's good hope they do in UK my car's 30 years old I travel even better in my Morris minor
Heds Asperger's ADHD ocd fybromyalgia i have rccx theory is very good and your work to ldn helps fatigue but not pain awake at night all.my life and pain is better at night than day mostly?
In my experience, there are multiple factors at play with any brain condition (including autism and OCD). I do think RCCX theory helps connect a lot of the dots. Many people I see with autism spectrum symptoms, and OCD have inflammation, mast cell activation (likely due to a 21-hydroxylasevariants), and an exaggerated stress response. High pyrroles (with low zinc, B6 and Magnesium), candida, and mold and metal toxicity are also very common as are COMT or MAOA variants. I'm usually thinking of an alignment of factors instead of one cause
If I understand correctly, you pain has stopped after four years. I'm curious what your thoughts are as to why it stopped. What seemed to help you with this.
Great question. If you are having symptoms, you could consider if they are suggestive of high or low catecholamines. Just having variants doesn't mean that they are being expressed. It's possible that neither are being expressed, but again, your symptoms would be the best way to assess if either is having a bigger impact or even if they are mostly canceling each other out (as far as the catecholamines). MAOA is also involved with histamine metabolism, so that may be another way to see if it could be at play.
I have a bizarre issue where supplemental zinc seems to cause aggressiveness (for lack of a better word) and temper issues. I am normally very peaceful and always have great self control and struggle with OCD and anxiety but one dose of zinc and within 1-3 days I’ll fly off the handle and do something completely out of character like get in a shouting match at work. I take zinc very rarely just for its obvious immune boosting effects but almost always regret it. I’ve never heard a good explanation for why it might have this effect on me. My levels were recently tested and yielded 61 uh/dl so my guess is that’s on the low side.
Thank you for sharing your experience. If copper is high, too much zinc too soon could mobilize copper and cause worsening of copper-type symptoms, one of which is temper issues. It is also a strong antioxidant that is important in heavy metal detoxification, which again worsens symptoms if it starts too high or worked up too quickly. I can't say either is the case for you, but what I think about when someone has reactions.
It can be difficult to get accurate zinc levels. They are often falsely elevated. This sample report from DHA lab shares the optimal ranges: www.dhalab.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Metabolic-Panel-Sample-Report.pdf

Hi. I don't use hair to measure zinc but use plasma zinc instead. When I start someone on zinc, I start very low and go up slowly. It is a strong antioxidant and can decrease copper. If copper and high and mobilized too quickly, then it can aggravate symptoms. I don't know why your ankles would hurt specifically. Typically zinc helps joint symptoms, which is why I wonder if something is being mobilized and triggering inflammation. Rarely, if someone has mast cell activation, something in the supplements besides the nutrient itself is triggering the immune system. Trying a different form helps identify this problem. I hope something here may be useful.
There are forms of EMF that are therapeutic, such as PEMT and FSM. When I reference EMF, I am referring to the problematic forms such as RF/radiofrequencies, MF/magnetic frequencies, EF/electric frequencies and DE/Dirty electricity. Thank you for your question.
Hi. I'm not sure I fully understand your question. I don't usually think of these in combination, though there is "zinc methionine," which by some is considered a highly absorbable form of zinc. I typically use zinc picolinate because it is well absorbed. In this episode, I discuss methionine being used for undermethylation. Because so many people with brain symptoms are relatively low in zinc, that is commonly part of the nutrient protocol as well. More specifically, zinc can help regulate the NMDA receptor, which often has high activity in those who are undermethylated. Please feel free to elaborate. Thank you for the question.
Thank you for your answer. I really appreciate your podcasts and all the broken down information you give as I can relate. To be more specific I have an autistic non verbal daughter who is almost 8 years old. We are working with a doctor who was trained to follow Dr Walsh’s protocol. She has done the blood, hair & urine test and as indicated in “nutrient power” book, she was very low in zinc and high in copper. Also positive for pyrrole disorder. We are currently following a nutrient regiment aimed at increasing her zinc level. One thing that was mentioned to us was that since her zinc is still too low her body is not yet doing the important cell repair or connection that needs to happen for her behavior to start shifting. I know it’s a loaded comment but I was trying to understand better the role that zinc plays in an autistic non verbal person and what could enhance its absorption when supplementing with zinc picolinate and citrate
@@ninivetoutou I'm glad you find the podcast helpful. Zinc has so many important roles in the brain and body. If you haven't seen it, I have a recent episode just on zinc that goes through the mechanisms by which it impacts the brain. In my experience , some people simply need higher doses to get into the optimal range, so I'm typically not having to add something to increase absorption (as much as increase the dose and monitor levels). With autism many of us use MT promotion therapy once someone's zinc level is high enough. Separately with autism, I'm usually not only addressing Walsh nutrient imbalances but also toxins such as mold toxicity and/or candida and even lowering EMF exposure. While optimizing zinc can help with gut-related issues (that are often present), addressing gut-related issues can also help with the absorption of nutrients. I hope something here is helpful.
Hi ,I got tested for metabolizing medication, because my dr couldn't find tight meds to help my depression. Turns out I don't metabolize medication well is that a symptom of under methylation?hope you can answer thanks for yiur video
Great question. Thank you. Such tests are not related to methylation, however, aside from looking at genes involved in the metabolism of certain medications, many of those tests twill also test for the MTHFR gene (and sometimes COMT), which are genes involved in methlylation. MTHFR is the main gene involved in methylation, but there are a number of others also involved.
I am originally from Louisville, Kentucky, and when searching for a functional medicine psychiatrist, your name came up. I have heard that you may have relocated to Florida. Do you treat patients there, as I am in FL a good part of the year. Do you know of a functional medicine psychiatrist in the Louisville area? Thanks for your help if you can supply it!
I am in the Louisville area, however, my practice is telehealth (by video). I am licensed in Kentucky, Florida, Ohio and Indiana, so I am able to treat people who live or can travel at least once a year to one of those states (the other appointments don't require being in one of those states). For others not in those states, I am able to provide non-patient phone consultations. My website, CourtneySnyderMD.com, has detailed information about my practice. Thank you for your question.
I have had to manage EHS and MCS for about 20 years (I'm 54). I have suffered nearly everything the you have so eloquently described. It is indeed pleasing to hear someone with your credentials identify and shed light on an illness that many of us live with in silence. As time goes on I suspect this condition will be the culprit of many otherwise diagnosed illnesses.
Yes. I agree with you. It is much more common than people realize. I have found that addressing mold toxicity has been very helpful. I'm 56 and suspect my sensitivity also goes back 20 yearsl, though I was chasing other things down. I am glad that listening to this was positive for you. I was thinking today, that I want to share more on this topic, in part because of your comment. Thank you for taking a moment to comment. Best to you on your journey.
@@courtneysnydermd-holisticp3072 My journey started back when I was about 18. No computers, internet, or mobile. Through trial and error I came to discover that sodium nitrate in all cured meats was causing my pesky skin condition that I had for a few years. It took a few years to finally break free from meat addiction, but I finally championed it and have been vegetarian/vegan for nearly 20 years. Now if something bothers me I just do the elimination process until I zero in on the culprit. In some ways I'm thankful for this condition so that I know what is causing me harm vs being oblivious. Thanks again.

I do think pyrrole disorder can be at play, however, more often I think of high copper (which can occur with pyrrole disorder). But I also think about slow COMT and/or estrogen dominance. And lastly if someone is having a lot of immune symptoms, I think about mast cell activation. Someone else recently emailed about this and I look forward to doing an episode on PMDD. Thank you for your question.
