Man Chris over and over again proves that he's my favorite pianist xD His playing is so nice to listen to. It's not over cluttered like so many other pianists and he has such a nice touch at the instrument.
Man I LOVE this set they did! The piano sounds awesome, the sound is so well balanced, great angle on the musicians too, apart from Marty hiding behind the piano xD
I love the sound and feel of Milt Hinton's playing(and all of the bassists are great on this video); he could hang with the best of them nowadays, maybe even still show them a thing or two from what I see and hear, on this video. Way to go Milt! 9-16-24.
Thank you for this. I've long been listening to Hank D'Amico on everything that I can find, and in particular on an album by Steve Allen (on piano). He had a wonderful sound and musical approach all his own, and seemed to be elegantly incorporating elements of 'modern jazz' into his playing. I think it's no exaggeration to say he was the most underrated of all the swing era clarinetists.
RIP to Dan. The store he’s referring to (run by Big Joe Clauberg) was the original Jazz Record Center (not to be confused with Fred Cohen’s current store on W 26th street). And Jacob Schneider was on “I’ve Got a Secret!” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ev4DmW6w00w.html (go to 6:39).
Joyful. Never heard from a trio before; most familiar with Tuba Skinny's many renditions. Jen living up to the title of her album "The Girl in the Groove."
At this point in my life the trombonist I most enjoy hearing now is John Allred. Sorry JJ, Urbie, Fontanna, Rosolino, James Morrison, etc, etc, but the choices John Allred makes when he plays, combined with such a beautiful sound is absolutely compelling and memorising. After 56 years of playing the trombone myself, if I was asked today, John Allred would be my desert island trombonist choice.
I remember watching John Allred play as a guest artist many years at the old Sacramento Jazz Jubilee with some of the greats like Howard Alden, Allan Vache etc...sadly all those trad and swing festivals are mostly gone in the U.S. now.
Two really fine festivals are going strong in the US -- this October's Redwood Coast Music Festival in Eureka, California, and next March's Jazz Bash by the Bay in Monterey, also California. We can mourn the losses but have to celebrate the good things still afloat!
