Welcome to Trippin' Outdoors! My name is Danny Grogg, and I've created this channel as a passion project to get out and get busy living enjoying the very things I love so much! Mass Transit and The Great Outdoors! This will be a real journey of it's own unique sorts, and I'd LOVE to be able to have you along for the ride!

This Channel will start out slow as I've only got access to places I can get to via TriMet (the local transit system) and walking. I aim to make this channel into a haven of fantastic, fun, entertaining and raw, reel (ha, see what I did there) content rife with good times, and expansion into new trips, new modes of transit, and of course, new fishing spots, too!

I am nearly 30 at the time of starting this, and I hope you too know it is never too late to start something new, fresh and fun!

Please consider supporting me on Patreon too, to aid me in continuing to build this community of ours from scratch and expand the content! patreon.com/thecriminalviolin/

This is the very first video I have ever recorded in 4K60FPS! I also do not own any devices capable of 4K, as my monitors are 1080p, and my phone is capable of filming in 4K (this video was filmed with it), yet its screen it limited to 1440p (2K), so if you watch this in 4K, let me know how much better or god forbid worse it is to my normal 1080p videos! I should mention something I had not prior - to anyone who has watched any of my videos since the start (before this one), I'm sure you've noticed a pretty big difference between the overall crispness, sharpness and saturation of this video (quality), and that's because this was the first ivdeo I ever filmed entirely on a phone, instead of on a NoBro (knock-off GoPro)! I had recently obtained a new phone in a refurbed Pixel 6 Pro, and this was entirely shot on it. The next video which will go live 11/12/2023, was also recorded on it in full 4K60FPS, which will subsequently be the first time I've ever done that as well! I hope the jump in quality helps your enjoyment and immersion in the adventures!

@@trippinoutdoors The 67 started at Cedar Hills TC behind the Safeway and onto SW Butner Rd go down to Cedar Hills Blvd, turn right, go under Sunset where NW Cedar Hills Blvd meets NW Cornell Rd and turn left. At SW Cedar Hills Blvd at the Beaverton Mall, now Cedar Hills Crossing, it would turn right, then left at SW Hall, another left at SW Center St, then right at SW 117th until SW Canyon where it will turn right at SW Lombard, and into the Beaverton TC. The only real reason no one rides WES is because of the stupid schedule they decided to run it on. Only rush hour, once and hour both ways. So 6 runs per day in each direction. It's so stupid. If they ran it more frequently, and actually extended it to Salem and Keizer, it would see way more support and way more ridership. When talking with people about it, both those who ride it consistently/rely on it and those who are more railfans/general leisure users of it say the same thing - if they made it consistent in service where it ran like a bus or even MAX, there'd be a lot more demand and riders of it. And they both also say the same thing and agree on a extension to Salem too, which literally every single person I have ever talked to about it, including read or overheard themselves talking of WES all say they want both of those things to happen and it would be great and something they would end up using happily fairly consistently. But as usual, TriMet half-assed it, and attempted to build it out in secret too while they cut bus service heavily because of "a budget deficit and crisis", as we both know. Because of course TriMet would do that. If only.

I guarantee ridership permanently dropped further from those at the Beaverton end of the line once Fry's went out of business. Fry's was about the only reason people would ever go to Wilsonville in the first place. It's really just a middle class business person from Wilsonville's personal express shuttle into Portland for work. That's it as it stands. And it hardly works for anyone trying to get to Canby for the fair in August too given it's hours of operation.

Just a small clarification, at 3:40 you state that "WES by law requires both a TriMet employee AND a rail engineer". The FRA - Federal Railroad Administration - requires a train crew of an Engineer and a Conductor. Both of these people on WES are employees of Portland & Western Railroad, not TriMet. Technically TriMet (or P&W) could apply for a waiver of the rule but from what I've been told either the FRA denied it, or it was too much hassle to apply for a waiver.
@trippinoutdoors
@trippinoutdoors 2 года назад
Interesting. I didn't know that, as from my understanding the conductors are TriMet employees, not P&W. Also from both this ride last year and my ride yesterday, the only person who has a P&W logo anywhere on their uniforms is the engineer, but I may have somehow missed that on theirs. I'll have to review my footage to see if I caught that or not.

I want to mention that it's safe too. I was living in Oregon away from my last ex because the guy she dumped me for wanted to harm me. On the WES I felt a lot safer than I did riding public transportation in California. Tri Met themselves do a good job of securing it's property but with WES you don't need security or law enforcement to protect it for some reason. Which is why it's so nice
@spredelectric
@spredelectric 2 года назад
TriMet didn't make those "silly rules". It is part of the agreement that TriMet, ODOT, Washington County, Portland & Western Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, and the Surface Transportation Board all agreed to when establishing the permanent freight easement and the agreement to purchase the railroad. Also since TriMet contracts with Portland & Western to operate the train, any such expansion of service would require P&W to hire and train more crews. Since TriMet already spends $30 per boarding ride for WES but only receives $2.50 in revenue, somehow expanding service doesn't seem wise when TriMet could simply run more 76 service at a tiny fraction of the cost and not have to worry about contracts and going to a federal agency for permission.

That bus is squeaky as shit! I bet that’s a great driving job! That’s a short bus isn’t it? The seats do look good ! That little section of the highway is ridiculously congested. Just too much traffic and not enough space. I was never totally convinced of the “induced demand” problem. It’s got more to do with out of control growth rather than expanded highways. Nice video Dan!
@trippinoutdoors
@trippinoutdoors 3 года назад
Highways and Freeways always spur new developments along them too. Think of how recent all that commerical area there at Bridgeport Village is in Tualatin. It is actually quite new. And the bypass the constructed to bypass Dayton, Dundee and Newberg is likely to do the same. Thus why you see the out of control growth causing the congestion. So you're right which is also how induced demand is right. Remember when 217 added those extra lanes? Look at how fast they filled up after they were constructed. It was almost immediate. Yet there was no new development anywhere near it when that happened. Not even new buildings. How? Because that is Induced Demand. Again also why the LA example is the best example. They kept incessantly expanding their freeway system with more capacity over and over and over again, and it immediately filled up. Even that didn't entirely correlate with the region's rapid development, as the latter two times, all the surrounding area was already fully developed. People who can afford to be motorists who see the new lanes become new drivers as they believe it would be quickest for them to drive, and now with new lanes, surely that means there won't be all the backups, right? Well, the amount of the people with the same assumption is always high enough that they quickly fill up new lanes, forcing the congestion problems to remain. Again, induced demand. As I noted multiple times, it is a minibus. One of the Ford Branded ones, like medical groups and transit agencies use for paratransit. Just compare my first trip report video on the 59 and those TriMet seats with that of these on SMART'S minibuses 😂 And I am happy you enjoyed it!

Oh for sure. That kind of scheduling situation is true for a lot of routes across their system, too. I mean heaven and hell both know the 62 needs almost twice as many runs, and/or doubled capacity. But I was surprised to see how filled out my car of WES got on this trip. I was expecting half that number at best. I'd say it filled to around 50% capacity by the time we were off to Wilsonville. Notes of things I've learned with this video: -My Phone's camera does not like high lighting or low lighting situations, functioning best in moderate lighting instead, with high & low light producing some of the lowest quality film & photos -Sunshafts seem to be something that either appear more as a blur/stain on the inside of the lens' cover than sunshafts in film about 70% of the time, with only about 20% of the remaining times coming out as decent-high quality captures of them. -I definitely seem to find this phone will randomly switch to using the built-in mic during video recordings instead of my lapel mic, which was apparently in this video. The audio quality changes off & on. -I definitely do have a natural shake, but it is not as bad as it seems to me, as I seem to conflate my natural shake and me trying to hold still while moving/walking, which isn't exactly fair. -Definitely beneficial to have my action cam on me at all times for these kinds of trips, if not just to have that bit higher quality overall with the gyroscope so that any & all movement's negative impact on quality is minimized. -My phone is arguably better at macro shots while filming than normal footage would be, but that also requires me to be much more still. -I still have issues with figuring out where to angle my phone when recording video with it. For context, my phone for some unknown reason happens to need to be pointed/aimed AWAY from whatever the subject of an image or video is, about six inches to the left of wherever the subject is, and it's either up or down, right now I am not recalling it. Half of the time, the subject ends up out of the frame in regards to where the lens itself is aimed, yet is at that point somehow directly in the center of the preview on screen, and subsequently the photos/videos. I still fail to quite gauge that offset correctly, and having dyslexia definitely doesn't help that haha. Again, remember I am new to this kind of video making, being filmography, so this whole channel is as much a documentation of my growth and progress learning the trade as it is entertainment and sharing in the adventures and experiences of each video I output. So it is good that I make notes like these so that not only I can benefit from it in the long term, but it may also help you as well.

May need to give it a shot. It's a favorite to start kiddos on, so it's probably a good place for me to restart. The rig I used in the beginning is a trout magnet on a typical panfish Jighead. I will definitely need to put it onto my itinerary. Thanks for the suggestion! And thank you so much for stopping by to watch a video. I appreciate it a lot! Have a great night!
