Spoiled student athlete.. if he didn't die 2 days after being drafted.. he'd never make it past his rookie season alive. Fame and $ was eventually going to get him
There was a jogging track above the stands at Cole, in the winter we could jog indoors, but when Lefty was pissed he get his assistants to run the joggers out of Cole during practices. He was a beloved tyrant.
This was the season Maryland established itself as a school to be reckoned with on the hardwood. Winning the NIT AS was huge back then. Maryland with Lefty as coach was so entertaining and exciting throughout those years, it was truly a shame they never made the Final Four because year in and year out they were always a legitimate threat, and the NCAA Tournament only taking 1 team back then (especially the '74 team) was hurtful because Maryland was as good as anyone and had great talent and very well could've won a National Championship.
Horrible his mother wasn’t home waiting him. Just got drafted to the NBA probably gonna take care of her for life and wasn’t there. Worst yet she was mad he didn’t wait for her. Gross
One of my siblings grew up to be a sportswriter and he still insists that this is the greatest college basketball game in history. We were all huge NCSU fans and followed every game in the early 1970s, I remember this game well, the audience was on the edge of their seats, an amazing game with amazing players, including the incomparable David Thompson!
Phony. The guy wasnt even close to.legitamely graduating...never went to classes...so what was he doing all that time? Hard to believe this was his first time taking drugs...
I was born too late ((in 1992) but because of my Grandfather, Aunt, uncles, cousins, and parents plus Videos on RU-vid I love the 70s and 80s baseball the most 🤷, more sportsman like than later years in my opinion. Bert Campaneris looks like a small boy next to Boog Powell but man can Campy run 👌

That was the thing about the old days of college basketball. There wasn't a 24-second shot clock and a team could take as much time as they wanted before they shot the ball.Lefty certainly was a coach who used this to his advantage.
One of the best games ever played and very important in the history of the ACC. However, as of 2024, UNC has 6 national titles, Duke has 5, NC State with 2 and Maryland with 1. The last Big Ten team to win the national title was Maryland and that was when they played in the ACC.
Ralph Sampson was WAY better than Tom Burleson of NC State even though the same height. More athletic, quicker, faster, smoother, stronger, and a better shooter. But Burleson wasn't bad.
