I don't know why but this show reminder me of Tenacious D's Pick of Destiny. I love when corps make an unusual instrument such as the electric guitar or cello, or sitar and make it a key point in the show. The eleven is on part of the corps' emblem.
been waiting for this one!! Troop is a personal favorite corps of mine, their themes are always executed well and they use really cool props! Someone got stuck in the air on one last year though
seeing this live was an amazing experience. I got to watch this during my first season of winter guard. They came to out championship compitition and I was just absoulety stunned. This kind of performance is something that I can only dream of. This performance made me fall in love with guard and now it is something that I want to continue even after high school.
Tweo things you asked about: THe ballad music is the same core piece used by the Bluecoats this year:: Agape'. The shape they formed at the end of the ballad is the "Fleur-de-lys", associated most anciently with Medieval France and represent the Iris flower. It is also common around Louisiana/Cajun lands because of their ties back to New France [yes it is on the Saints helmet in football], and of course it is the primary symbol of Quebec province in Canada, and is on their flag.
I'm not sure if it was my recommendation or someone else's, but I'm glad to see your reactions! This was definitely my wife's favorite show of the year, and she's salty that it didn't place higher! (lol) I told her if it weren't for Santa Clara coming back this year, they would have placed 6th again this year (they placed 7th). When we saw the show live in Atlanta, she and I were sitting next to a couple from Louisiana, and we were all wondering how a bunch of kids from California could authentically capture the spirit of New Orleans in their show! "Vieux Carre'" means "old square," and is the common name referring to the French Quarter in NOLA. The form you were referring to is the fleur-de-lis (also the New Orleans Saints' emblem, so great pickup on that one!) If New Orleans is known for anything, the opening (and the closing) scenes signals the street musician in the square of the French Quarter, but "when the walls came down, the party was on!" It highlighted jazz (born in NOLA), Mardi Gras (which means "Fat Tuesday" in French, which is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent before Easter), and because some of the French influence came from slaves who originated from Haiti, voodoo (the woman in black was portraying a voodoo priestess). The only thing missing was the beignets, gumbo, jambalaya, and the Mardi Gras beads! (BTW: those were brushes the snare line was using; my wife uses them quite frequently when she plays drums for me at my church!) Thanks for reviewing, and we're (my wife and I) glad you enjoyed it! P.S. My wife reminded me that in the scene where the "street parade jazz band" was playing, some of the corps' parents were in the audience actually tossing out Mardi Gras beads...

Hi! I was in this show and you said something about counting and it was definitely a challenge with the song. Sometimes there wasn’t even a beat at all and it would change throughout the whole song so we had to kind of just roll with it!
I swear, there’s something new to find every time I see this show. The multi-cam really doesn’t do it justice. Also, your commentary on the theming and ideas of this show were super insightful, I hadn’t thought of any of the potential explanations you were offering.
No one else came close in my opinion. This show was brilliantly designed. I really thought it was gonna hit a 99. One of the best designed shows from top to bottom ever in DCI and was such an experience live.
The flag feature using live sampling and pushing it out through the speakers a little distorted was such an experience live. The video doesn’t do it justice.
This is one of those shows that deserves multiple listens. The first time I saw it I was a bit put off by the whole thing but by the end of the year it was my favorite show by a mile. Funny enough I felt the same way about them last year.
Great point! Maybe they purposefully designed the show to grow on us and literally change our perspective from beginning to end of season. There are many nuggets in it for sure! :)
you should react to the original show it’s Earl Warren Highschool it’s called Saturday Night Fever. we sold our stuff to them🤗 it was our floor, we had very similar costumes too but you should definitely look at it !
I loved your analysis about the guard with the silver flags at the front representing "the winds of change," and out of all the commenters, your analysis of the ending made it finally make sense to me, and my wife and I saw this show live in Atlanta if you recall me saying this from an earlier show commentary. For me to truly appreciate the show, I had to view it from FloMarching's High Cam view instead of the multi-cam. It was clean, it was well-executed, and while it wasn't my favorite show this year, I do understand why it won. You're not disappointing me with your final thought, I agree that it wouldn't be my favorite either, but the reason that it won is that they "out-Blue Deviled" the Blue Devils this year; in other words, they simply out-perfected and out-executed everyone else, and the judges gave them credit for it. (But I say this as the "old-fogey" of the commenters here.) P.S. I know you've done the Top 6, but I would love to see a reaction show to both the Troopers' and the Mandarins' show this year

Its good that its not a popularity contest despite my desire for underdogs to come out on top lol If general and visual effect were the only metrics, that would not fully encapsulate the dynamic nature of the activity. Ultimately, I agree, they showcased both the "sport" and the "art" in a balanced manner :) And yes, I will add those suggestions to the list! Thanks!
Hello! I'm in Estill's band, and just to help understand; the show is about moths! Specially, moths being drawn to a flame. Our director really likes vague titles for our shows so he has more creative freedom with it. Also, this isn't the whole show! Theres another half to the closer but at this point in the season, we didn't have it on the field. Thanks for the reaction, its super cool as a smaller band!! <3

I like the show. It’s not as fun as Downside Up, as a winner, but I felt the performance is probably better. They were undefeated and as close as Boston got they never really had a chance for first. The most human connection I got was I really wanted some McDonalds fries.
I thought it would have been cool if the guard and the horn line switched uniforms. It seem like that were getting there and couldn't quite get there. But this still was a cool show. The song is Agape by Nicholas Britell. It's from If Beale Street could Talk. I feel that's a good song to stretch or meditate to.
Yes! That would have been cool! Looking back, the guard did a gesture with their hands and I thought snake or alligator or something, and now I feel they were representing how reptiles shed their skin. IDK really lol
For me bluecoats deserved the first place. There was a youtuber that explained it better than I can, I think they said that Bloo is the chameleon of dci. Trying new things taking risks, so this show was basically not only them changing as a chameleon but also dci as a whole. Also they never reveal their show until the first competition for them i think. I believe it was funliner productions that said it but I might be wrong so if anyone remembers pls help.
I’ve been waiting for your reaction of this show! Not much on here do we get the chance to see how people react to these shows. My thoughts on the ending is that they’re sort of coming together (hinted by the same chord they used to open the show) to look out on this beautiful chaos they just made throughout the show! I love you and your content. Allow me to offer a gentle correction. It is more appropriate to title the marching musicians as the horn line and not the band. As far as I can remember it was an abhorrent insult to refer to anything in drum corp as "band"; it is after all quite a step above and beyond. HugZ.

Call me your "DCI Grandpa" here.. (marched in the early '80's, was on the board of the same corps I was a charter member of,) but I've watched this show from the very beginning of the season and my wife and I got a chance to see it live in Atlanta at DCI Southeast. A couple of things I'm surprised you didn't comment on: during the ballad portion "True Colors", did you noticed how the drumline and the guard were in the backfield intermingling with each other (black and white molding well together with the hoops, rifles, and sabers) while the hornline colors were coming together in their color sections, all without drumbeats; definitely a highlight of their entire show! Also, (and FloMarching didn't really do this justice, you had to be there live to see what was happening,) but after the "infinity loops" came together for the final time toward the end, the headlights in their headwear actually started flashing from then until the end of the show (Atlanta was the first place they actually started that effect, one of their last additions before Finals). I jokingly called them "DCI's Ringmasters" and "Boston and the Amazing Techincolor Drum Corps", but outside of Phantom Regiment, because they were so close to beating Bluecoats, I REALLY wanted them to win the Gold! Can't wait to see what you have to say about Bloo. (And don't forget from my last comment, BC won the guard caption and came in second in visual and GE.)
I did not notice the drumline and guard! Thank you for pointing that out! There was so much "eye candy" I knew I was going to miss some things. I hope I can get back to watching live next year. The computer screen does these shows NO JUSTICE lol. I think Boston Crusaders should have gotten gold as well, this show was phenomenal! I didn't get romantic until I heard the carousel song and Billy Porter's Time. Other than that it was the intense and "spontaneous" music and sights as you describe. Could you do a reaction to 2022 SCV and the corps you marched with and show you were in. Would love to hear a hindsight review.

The calliope is the carousel instrument... BD guard was 3rd behind Boston Crusaders and Bluecoats. every so often BD does a concept show that doesn't always resonate with the audience, but usually sets them up for success in the following year. Can't wait to hear your commentary for both BC and Bloo.
Ironically this is the only BD show I really enjoyed since FElliniesque, and these last two.... Tempus Snooze and Cutouts.. Good luck engaing the crowd on some obscure angle on the life of Matisse .. BLEAAH. When I finally eralized watchinghte Ogden show that they were playing the Diablo III opening music I just lost it! I played that game intensely fomr 11 years. And I know the composer.. I daresay last time I saw him in person 2014, he would never have inagined a champion Drum Corps using THAT music.
