Fruit enthusiast trying to grow as many fruit trees as possible in my small backyard and small greenhouse. I live in Virginia Beach zone 8a pushing the growing boundaries as much as I can. I'm especially interested in citrus, jaboticaba and rare tropical fruit trees. Thank you for visiting my channel! BTW most people just call me "g".
Hi 👋🏼 love your collection @RyansTropicalFruits!! I’m also in Chattanooga! Would be awesome to meet up! as I bought a small greenhouse and want to set it up for next yr to have some tropical fruit trees as well. ❤
Wow I can't believe they're fruiting in such small pots! Did you get that tip from Theme? lol. I'm REALLY happy to find a video on potted loquats. I have 2 gold nuggets potted and growing some seeding Spanish alegieri from what I ate from Hmart. Bigger & tastier than big Jim.
Hello my friend! Thanks for stopping by from FB :) I think me and Theme have been growing trees for a similar amount of time. By coincidence we both tend to keep trees in small pots for a long time. Gold Nugget is good. Best of luck with your Spanish loquat seedlings. Ive seen them in Hmart and those are huge. Have a wonderful rest of your week!
@@VirginiaFruitGrower heyyyy! Have u considered posting your videos to the houston plant group? I bet you'd get a ton of views. I'm gonna share it bc I'm stoked over potted loquats. 💚
@vnxettitw4879 I've only posted the visit with Theme on the Houston group. I try not to personally spam my videos everywhere so it's not annoying to people lol. I really appreciate you sharing the vid though! It means a lot to me 🙏
@@VirginiaFruitGrower lol it's not spamming if we know who you are & trust you! It's the weird unknowns that try to sell that annoy me bc they end up being scammers

I literally bought one this year called "Spring Flower". It remains to be seen if that truly is the case or some shady marketing. I think it should be big enough now to flower this spring but we'll see 🤔 . Thanks for your time watching!
Great video G. So many small trees yet all giving fruits. So cool how you cover the fruit and the base to protect them from the squirrels. I can relate to your issue. 🤣 I am assuming you are getting all these fruits due to the grafting? I am sure they would give fruits but it would take a longer period, correct? I like the updates on the fruits. They do look yummy. I kept looking at your pomegranate tree. I would love to plant this here but not sure how it will do over the winter. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week. 👏👍👍👍👍
@notafraidtogarden4806 hey my friend! Yes grafting mature scions is usually key to getting smaller trees to fruit. Squirrels are terrible but the mesh bags help out tremendously. Thanks a mil!
Wow it is fruiting nicely! The bricks and stones are a good idea 😁 them squirrel can be pesky!! Hope all is well over your way, so many are suffering the damage of Helene. Huge fruit😮 loaded with fruit over there 😊 beautiful
@IndianaBackyardGardener squirrels are the worst. Thanks a lot! Great to have you stop by. Yes sorry to see the people that took all the hurricane 🌀 damage
@AlexanderPoznanski sorry this is confusing. This was around late spring/beginning of summer. The trees are actually gearing up to bloom again currently. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic collection of loquats, G! Great to see another video of some of your plants. Do you have to protect the flowers or fruit from frost? Also, are you grafting onto seedling loquats or quince? I’ve been using quince as I’ve read it’s meant to help get them to fruit at a young age, but it might reduce the lifespan of the tree.
@PeterEntwistle I have quince rootstock but haven't used them yet. I just graft onto seedling loquats. Thanks a lot! I kinda took the summer off from RU-vid 😅. Quince does keep loquats dwarf but long term is an issue. Hopefully yours all work out and fruit more quickly.
Great to see you back with a video G ! I'm amazed how young and small your loquats flower and fruit there, i suspect they are triggered by your long periods of summer heat there which of course we don't get. The range of varieties you have in the States is also unmatched, we'd be lucky to find one or two named varieties in the UK these days and certainly none of those. I'm extremely lucky to have Oliver and Mrs Cookson, now i have to see if i can find a way to get them to flower and hold fruit over our vile winters 😂
Big thanks Brett! Yes seems like as soon as I graft loquats they turn around and fruit the next season. I agree that we are lucky to have so many varieties easily available here. I see your struggle to get almost any named variety anything there. I hope yours fruit soon.
I always took these for granted because where I grew up. There were plenty of trees to pick fruit from but where I am. I can no longer forage for them, gonna have to grow one sooner or later.
Lucky you to grow up where these were easily available! Yup, not too finicky to grow in pots in my experience. Good luck if you get around to growing them. The fruit are so delicious 😋
Ahhh the elusive yellowy orangish morsels of excellence... I am jealous yet happy for you simultaneously, as I am incapable of growing loquats. Looking great bro
Thanks a lot! TBH this video is from a while back but we are actually having good weather right now. Hope your week goes well!

Very nice loquat collection! 😊. Those bags are so cute and I bet they are real fruit savers. I like the updates on the fruit, nice big cluster 🤩Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much! 😊. I think the metal fabric ones I make look a little strange but they do work really well. I hope youre having some nice weather like we are.
Will be borrowing your river rock idea for mulching, pot weight, and squirrel deterrent. I have some loquats about same the size as yours but they have never flowered for me. Guessing they need more time or maybe some bloom fertilizer. Do you haul them inside in the winter?
I find it puzzling that yours haven't bloomed as I know yours are all grafted from mature scions. I can only guess it's a matter of our different climates 🤔. I only bring them in if they have bloomed, appear to be setting fruits and our temperature is supposed to get below 25F
Jim's Big White and Avri are very good. Sugar Crisp is one that I didn't mention but might be my top favorite. I grafted mine from scions that I got personally from Steve at Exotica nursery in San Diego.
@@Wags-ei9gw they are called organza bags. Lots of sizes and variations on Amazon. I also make them out of wire windo screen. Thanks a bunch for your time watching!
@Wags-ei9gw yep I buy a roll of those heavy duty wire window screen rolls cut out patterns and simply staple the edges. They also sell stainless steel mesh bags on Amazon but they're pretty pricey
Once again late to the party, but glad i made it, this ones a doozy. Awesome to see the lengths collectors go to grow trees out of thier climatic zone. Im with you guys about canistel and black sapote, I love them. We are about 1/2 way through eating about 50 fruit from a seedling canistel and I will be sad when they are done. Keep it up G.🤙
@dougs_urbanfarm hey Doug 👋. Glad to see you stop by. No worries as I've been mostly offline and not really posting. Your canistel fruit sounds delicious!
