How to make never fading long lasting tree tags. I forgot to mention that using a padded placemat or magazine/papers underneath the tag to inscribe the plant name helps greatly.
@VirginiaFruitGrower Thanks for all of the citrus videos. I'm kind of an entry level citruholic and was wondering if you sell any of your fruit so I could taste before buying a tree?
These never-fading, long-lasting tree tags are exactly what I've been searching for. Your step-by-step instructions make it seem so easy to create something durable and practical for labeling trees.
This is fantastic! Simple, inexpensive, and long-lasting solution for labeling my trees and plants. Thanks for sharing this easy process, G. I'm going to do this for all my trees this month! 😊
@@VirginiaFruitGrower Yes, I *do* intend to make these labels, and I'll be sure to send people your way when I do! 😊 We had a great family time here over the holidays - thank you! 8 of my 9 kids were able to come for a visit. The other one lives in Hawaii, but she 'zoomed' in to be with us. 😎 Hope you've had a wonderful holiday season as well. May 2024 be an excellent year for you!
Glad to see you posting again G. Your last video on this subject really improved my technique. Tomato twist wire works well. I put several labels on each tree as they disappear in the foliage.
Hey Alan! Thanks a lot. I thought the original video was a bit outdated and too lengthy. Yes with these virtually 'free' labels why not make a few and label each tree multiple times, right?! I hope you're doing well! I'm just too busy as always. Happy new year to you and the fam!
Yes!! Reduce, reuse, recycle!! I love this idea, and I definitely need this! Some of my labels that came with my tree are crumbling away now from the sun 😅 I was just watching a video about how gardening has become more consumeristic, and how we think we need to buy all these things to get started, but really we need to try to use what we have. Thanks for the idea 💡 😊
Thanks for the wonderful words. Even it's just a few cans it does help a little to recycle them into very long lasting tags. Anything plastic or written and not engraved has not lasted for me. Have a wonderful evening!
This is such a great idea to make plant tags! It looks so nice and can withstand any kind of weather. Awesome, I will give it a try 😊. Thanks for sharing ❤️🌷❤️
Come on you need to post more, we just love your content! By the way just as a few years ago, this is a nice thing to do, however as you mentioned it's much better with a mat underneath, I used to barely scratch letters into aluminium without this trick.
Wow thanks for the kind words. You're telling the truth brother. I need to post more. I just stay so busy. It's going to be time for me to start traveling again which makes it somewhat harder for me to keep up. Yes the padded mat is key. I wish I had mentioned that in the vid lol. I appreciate your support. Have a wonderful 2024!
Much more detailed video. To be fair the aluminium labels are cheap and strong that i buy here and i rarely buy cans of drink but if you are a big consumer of these its a great idea 👍
Yeah the ones I've seen here are kinda flimsy and the metal tie that is included is laughable. We're bad and drink soda in my house so I might as well recycle the cans haha
this is an interesting DIY... I have a hard time using cardboard for labeling the plants, and then afterward it won't last. Thank you for sharing the ideas.
My pleasure! I hope they aren't too much of a hassle for you to make. I got used to making these and I can whip out quite a few in a short amount of time. Happy 2024!
Happy new year Peter! Brett says you guys have decent aluminum tags available there. Recycling the soda/beer cans would definitely be a good thing! Thanks so much
@@VirginiaFruitGrower yeah, the ones I have seem quite good quality, although I prefer the wire you use. I don’t think the one that came with my tags would last as long.
Super thanks my friend. Yeah, out of everything I've tried. This has been what has work the best for me. Hope the winner stays mild. I can't tell you how ready I am for Spring lol
Happy new years! Your videos always have me smiling. This is very thrifty and eco-friendly which I adore but knowng my clumsy sellf Id end up amputating somethiing LOL
I use the bottom of the can and use a electric metal engraver on them and then drive a nail through the center into the trunk. No wire. Use a long nail and leave it sticking out a bunch. If you drive it flush the trunk will eventually overgrow the nail and bust the aluminum. The bottom of the can is much stronger than the sides.
@@VirginiaFruitGrower That’s how I label my big pecan trees I’ve grafted over the years. I have 26 different varieties. I started planting them in the late 1980s.
@@VirginiaFruitGrower Frontera Kitchen Chocolate Pecan Pie. The house desert of Rick Bayless 5 Star Mexican restaurant. Guys got his own TV program and Salsas in grocery stores. Recipe is online. I love regular pecan pie but I think this one is better. I really love chocolate though.
That’s a very cheap DIY way to do it! I paid for an embosser with ribbons of aluminum you feed into it. I’d love to know how you attach the labels to the tree.
Yes I like recycling my cans this way too lol. I prefer to use a small knife or drill to make a hole at the upper edge of the pot. Then I loop the wire through it. Each time I repot I simply remove the tag from the old pot then attach to the new one. If I am looping it to a branch I make sure it has enough room to not girdle the tree and keep are that I may eventually need to move it to a smaller diameter branch as the tree grows. Thanks for watching!!
I've been watching through a bunch of your tasting videos (and saw the one where the landscaping people destroyed a bunch of grafts and felt the pain as I've had similar happen to a couple of my plants). I was wondering if you could recommend something to try growing in-ground in zone 7a that could be used as a substitute for lemon/lime/orange in something like a pie or dessert? So whatever is most cold hardy without the trifoliate funkiness, I guess?
Good video I stole your idea a few weeks back that's cool you came out with the video on how to do it. I noticed in one of your previous videos you showed how you used window screen tape to tape the bottom of the pots. I've done the same thing 2 years ago great minds think alike. Been meaning to ask you I did some seedlings from what was called Orri tangerines and one in particular had one trifoliate leaf and one bi foliate , my question is could this cross have occurred in nature the research I've done online says they don't cross naturally, but if they both Bloom at the same time why wouldn't they? Maybe it is in the genetics of the actual plant heard this particular variety was made in Israel maybe they introduced trifoliate jeans to combat citrus greening ? Would like to hear your input
Hello good sir! Yes looks like we're on the same wavelength on gardening tips and great ideas :) Looks like you have a special Orri hybrid. Looks like some poncirus pollen was involved with the development of that fruit. It will be very interesting to grow that out and see how hardy the tree will be and how the fruit will taste. Please keep us updated. Happy new year!
@@VirginiaFruitGrower yes will do I believe I'm in zone 8a now since the USDA upgraded our zones thank you global warming I guess? I put a mandarin seedling in ground in the fall on the south side it was some kind of grocery store seedling don't know the variety so far so good . I waterproof basements for a living so I have been making a lot of tree pots out of construction wire and 4 inch perf pipe ads for my green house. I have also been using the mirror drain the black waffle board stuff to wrap around the seedlings seems to help for in ground.
I don't normally sell trees unless I happen to have extra seedlings. I think I have some taitri seedlings maybe. Also thank you very much for watching William!

Thanks a lot Ryan! After collecting a certain amount of trees I am unable to keep up with remembering each variety. I hate forgetting and then having mystery trees so I try to label everything right away. Happy new year sir!
