I visited Croyden from the USA in 2022. I saw the man seen at the start here, begging at the train station. I had 56 old pound coins on me, and was not able to exchange them at the bank. My brother and I had to catch a flight before the bank opened. I gave them to this man. The day before, we stopped in a pub for a sunday roast. We were sitting by the band, and it was very loud A young woman came over. Sat down at our table, and asked if we wanted to move. We did. So, even though we were told tables were reserved, she said she would take care of it, and we changed tables. A waitress came over, and said that this was not our table. We explained that another waitress said we could change, and we were then adked what she looked like. She was short, pretty, blonde hair, and her ears were pointed. The waitress was shocked. " thats our ghost. She is always doing that !" True story. Apparently she might be from my family, as we lived in Croydon in 1910.

Annoying soundtrack with a couple of technical inaccuracies. It only covers a very small part of Bermondsey which is bordered (if you exclude Rotherhithe) approximately by the Thames from London Bridge to just past Cherry Garden Pier and the Old Kent Road. Nothing of the half of Bermondsey south of the railway mentioned. That and a really annoying soundtrack!

Nice video, but missed out a few important things. Like the village high street, with old buildings and some cobbled paths. Marion Wilson Animal Park is in Charlton and its very rare to find something like that in London, and especially with free access. There's also the Thames riverside area and Thames Barrier.

It does not spread across London and Surrey, that is a bit of a misleading statement. Thornton Heath is IN Croydon, despite the fact that many still address letters to Thornton Heath, Surrey. There is no actual evidence that the area was ever a centre for saffron, it is simply one of the alternatives proffered by people about the etymology of the name of Croydon. It is far more likely, IMHO, that the name Crogdene (which is the earliest version of the written name) means crooked valley. Croydon owes its existence to the valley which was carved by the Proto-Wandle and created a gap in the North Downs which offered a direct and easy route between the area around London and the south coast. The problem of deciding where Croydon is in terms of the heirarchy of places has been exacerbated over the years by its politico-economic situation. It was regarded as being within the historic county of Surrey, but it has never been in the administrative county of Surrey. When county councils were first created in 1889, the new County of London took in the only other settlements in the county of Surrey that had a larger population than Croydon - being Southwark and Lambeth. Croydon itself, under the same Act of Parliament, became a County Borough (it had already been a borough) - thus having county status in its own right and returning a member of parliament. Its historic importance was derived from the Lord of the Manor. Like the manor of Lambeth, the manor of Croydon belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury - hence why both places had an archiepiscopal palace. It had been in the hands of the Archbishop since, at least, the ninth century. The more modern developments in the 18th and 19th centuries tended to be on the top of the river terrace (North End and High Street represent the line of the top of the ancient river bank), because it was drier and less prone to flooding (Old Town flooded regularly). The Victorian shopping areas and the administrative centre were all on this terrace. The first and second town halls were built on the western edge of the terrace along High Street and the third around the corner in what became Katharine Street. When Greater London was created, the Urban District to the south of Croydon was merged with the County Borough to form the new London Borough of Croydon. The old UDC had, previously been under Surrey County Council, but was no longer after 1 April 1965. So, since 1965 no part of the London Borough of Croydon was in the administrative county of Surrey, and the population within the old County Borough had never been under the SCC. Even in ecclesiastical terms, Croydon was different to the rest of Surrey (until comparatively recently) in that it was a 'peculiar' of the Archdiocese of Canterbury. In recent times, what we grew up thinking of as the Parish Church has been known as Croydon Minster. It is unclear why it has been important to emphasise this status since it had been a Minster church for well over a thousand years prior to it being called that on a daily basis. It simply means that this was the mother church with additional status within the local area and to where parishioners of smaller parishes came on real high days and holy days.

What memories this brings back! I moved into 17 Manor Avenue with my family when I was four weeks old, in January 1988 and I remained there until my parents' divorce came through in 2003 at which time, I moved with my Mum and brothers to 224 Brockley Road. To cut a long story short, we remained there until 2010 and now, I live in Devon.

I'd love to know more ( and perhaps see some photos of my secondary school in Unicorn Lane , a tiny cul-de-sac at the end of which was All Saints school which was apparently a junior school built in earlier Victorian times. It was nestled between the NAAFI building and the doss House in which the author of Down & out in London & Paris dwelt( George Orwell) I have not had any success with the history but would like to know more. The school closed in 1960.

I very much doubt “ class, race, gender, sexuality and religion” would be celebrated and discussed without inhibition there. You know that’s a lie. To criticise anything other than white, working class males would probably lead to a call to The Met.

I lived in the Old Justice pub (0.55) 1952-1957. My granparents were publicans and my Dad grew up there. I was born in 1952 and my sister in 1954. I remember the area around the pub was bombed badly during the war but the pub was not hit. Still remember standing behind the bar and my Nan serving the dockers eels and mash. Goilden days long gone
