MDZS and Untamed follow the same timeline, they just reveal it at different times. Chronologically for both series, WWX died only one time. In his first life he did the whole cloud recesses thing, expelled, etc. When the wens took over he got thrown into the burial mounds and everyone THOUGHT he died except LWJ who believed he was still alive. He stayed alive throughout the whole thing and appeared again to the sects as Yiling Patriarch in the middle of the sun shot campaign and ended the rebellion basically. Some differences in who and what they did in the sun shot campaign from MDZS and Untamed but generally the same. WWX is still on life number 1 at this point, gets on everyone’s bad side and story changes here a bit. In Untamed the Nightless City conference to kill WWX happens, he appears, causes chaos then dies falling off the cliff. In MDZS WWX basically gets whisked away by LWJ in the chaos, LWJ protects him by fighting and injuring Lan clan members and sends WWX back to Burial Mounds before accepting punishment. WWX’s reason and cause of death in MDZS is not explicitly clear but it’s implied destroying half of the Stygian Tiger Amulet/ Yin Tiger Tally was what killed him. After that he’s dead for 13/15 years until MXY brings him back in MDZS and Untamed. After he brings him back WWX causes chaos, figures out the ghost hand, defeats it then skips out of town before LWJ appears. After that the dancing goddess statue, meeting Jinling, Jiang Cheng and LWJ happens and the story continues. In MDZS book and audio drama the timeline skips back and forth between present day and flashbacks. In the anime it starts with MXY sacrifice then follows the chronological timeline back to his death and onwards. In Untamed it starts with his death at Nightless City, follows to his resurrection by MXY and goes on until meeting LWJ in MXY’s body then jumps back his his childhood and continues until his death, then jumps back to present day. There is no other worlds. Also, in the book when WWX’s soul is summoned and put into MXY’s body. WWX kept MXY’s features and looks like MXY to everybody, which is why LWJ and JC wasn’t sure who he actually is. WWX ends up looking more like his old self over the years but that’s in the extras. The anime kept the same idea of looking like MXY but made both MXY and WWX’s designs very similar to prevent confusion for watchers. Untamed changed it so WWX now looks exactly like his past self after summoning, which is why he uses the mask to cover his face when meeting with people he or MXY might know. The animatic is more about MXY’s life based on what the novel says and looking at why he’d end up making the sacrifice to WWX. But MXY’s full story is never explicitly told in book or adaptation. There’s theories and speculation but all we know for sure is that he was an illegitimate son of Jin Guang Shan, picked up after many years, was allegedly bad at cultivating, got kicked out (might have to do with how everyone calls him gay), had a mental breakdown based on something that might have happened during his time at the Jin clan, the shame killed his mother so he lives with the Mo and suffered abuse and was considered crazy by everyone to the point of doing the ritual.
