\tMike's Goldwing Garage was created to help Goldwing owners understand and feel more comfortable about working and maintaining their motorcycles. I'll do this by showing you how to maintain your motorcycle using basic tools in a simple garage without breaking the bank. \t \tI know and understand that some of you may be in the position like me where you have to drive a half hour or more just to get to a Honda dealer where getting basic maintenance ends up being an all day adventure. Most of the day to day maintenance you can do on your motorcycle are simple tasks and will help to extend the life of your investment. \t \tMy goal here is to show you how to do those basic tasks with minimal skills and tools. I'll take you through removing panels to access areas for service such as brake fluids and pads, motor oil and gear oil changes on my 2016 "Gen 2" Goldwing.
If you have any questions, send me an email or stop by my website at www.mikesgoldwinggarage.com below.
Thanks greatly for the vid, I just got a new screen for my 02 and this was the most detailed video that I seen on here. I’m sure it will be no problem to replace. I may also order a vent to install first so thanks again.
Is this how you access that plastic mesh radiator grill piece? I don’t know the exact name of the part. It’s the diamond pattern plastic between the outer side fairing and the radiator.
Sorry for such a late reply... You might be able to get to it by just lifting the top shelter and pulling outward on the side cowl. Any time that I have been in that area, I had the entire front cowl off. The grill piece is connected to the radiator and not the cowling. There are two tabs on the bottom of the radiator that the grill slides over plus some clips on the top (looks like two there as well). Hope that helps....
Install went as planned. Had to lube the click stops - a bit sticky at the bottom during testing. 5/2014 Researched Partzilla OEM parts 3 vs. 5 slots; 5 for 2001-2004, 3 for 2005+
Thankyou, I fussed with the wire removal for 30 minutes. Wished I watched this video first to understand those rubber covers and the wire tabs on speaker wires. My ignition harness wire is missing the push down tab, obviously someone was here before and got frustrated and broke it. Now I guess its a dealer trip.
Just bought a 2004 Gold wing Trike, and while the speakers aren't bad at all for factory.....I would like better ones. What is everyone's recommendation for replacement speakers?
Best explanation yet. I recently bought an ‘05 GL1800 and it has a Vstream windshield. However, it will not adjust; simply won’t budge. What do you suggest I do?
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. Have you resolved this? If not, check the center locking track, there may be something binding in there. If it's free and works without the windshield attached, then look at the other tracks. Make sure you have the Teflon washers installed when mounting up the windshield. Check for movement at each stage of reassembly. This may give a clue as to what's causing it to bind up. Hope this helps
Thanks for this video. So many skip this part, anxious to get to the projects below it and frankly I understand the tasks below just fine. This part I was a tiny bit foggy, but you cleared up a couple questions I had, so thanks again.
They're OEM for the paint scheme I purchased. (2016 Black/Titanium) I took a look in some of the parts finders, but they don't specify color. You could ask around to see if anyone has them in black. The engine guard number to reference is 62501-MJG-670 for the right, and 62601-MJG-670 for the left. The rear Crash guards are 84130-MJG-670 for the right and 84140-MJG-670 for the left. OEM Prices are about $240 each for the engine guards and $87 each for the rear saddlebag guards. The other option of course would be to remove yours and have them powder coated. You should be able to get that done for under $200.00 I would imagine.
Mike, I would not recommend that location for the EC fuse block. A better location would be forward of the fuse panel where you connected the blue wire. If you have an issue with any of the circuits you would have to remove the seat to check the fuse. The location where you mounted the fuse block is perfect for the EC ground block.
I used your video to change the windshield on my GL1800 2012. Everything went great as I could stop and rewind and so on. Thank you a whold bunch for your videos.
I just came across your video ad I was looking for THIS SPECIFIC task. Excellent job! Straight to the point, and simple instructions. I'll be looking thru the balance of your videos to see what other gems you have from which I can learn. You earned my subscription today! Thank you!
Sorry I'm not familiar with that model and don't have any hands on knowledge of the location of the airbag components. That being said, I can't imagine there would be anything under the side fairing that would be part of that system. If you own a shop manual, those components and references should point out anything that may be different from my process.
I wish you had spent more time in just exactly how the heated seat connector is separated. Does it just pull apart or are there tabs to press and where are they?
The plug has a simple tab on top in the center of the plug to release it. I've found on most plugs, if you push them together first, you'll remove the pressure against the locking feature and allow it to release earlier.
This video was helpful for phase one of what I want to do. I need to replace the Nav/GPS screen on my 07 gl1800. Can you do a video on how to do that or doyou know of a video that shows how to do it. thanks
Sorry, I don't have a nav model. I use an external Garmen GPS. I would suggest getting a chop manual from your local dealer, they're well worth the investment.
Scott, Thanks for the request and comments. They're always greatly appreciated. Just so I understand what you're looking for, can you explain to me what it is you're trying to get at? The reason I ask is that I noticed this past fall that somehow, I damaged my left side exhaust header and was thinking about replacing it over the winter. Would make a great video for the channel (been a long time since I added content, I know) and it would include that panel I think you're looking for. What year is your wing? The model range that I would be working on is the 2012 - 2016 although the old models would be pretty much the same in this area with exception to the "foot warmers".
Mauro, Sorry for not getting back sooner, been down for the count the last couple weeks. Not sure exactly which lighting you're speaking about but if it's the ones inside the instrument cluster, I would leave those alone. Pulling apart the instrument cluster may introduce issues you may not want to deal with. I have seen people add the addition of strip lights under the meter panel itself. You can get a nice reflection of different colors which can bounce around nicely under the panel providing some cool effects. If you look on Amazon, there are a number of manufactures that provide the lights, controllers etc. One of the best ones I've seen, and use is Opt7. They have some nice plug and play kits which are easy to install. Hope that helps
Bryan, Sorry just getting back to you. Glad the videos helped out. I'm an old rock & roller from the 70's and 80' so I can certainly understand the need for a great set of speakers!! Hope you're enjoying the ride.
Darrell, Thanks I appreciate it!! Sorry just getting back to you. Hope you're enjoying your ride with a nicer windscreen and a prettier than stock bike!
Thank you because when my handlebar risers arrive, I have to remove the dashboard cover to access the handlebar. Mine's the 2017 model, so I know that I can follow the video.
Jo-han, Thanks!! Sorry, just getting back to you. Hope that helps to get the hand grips where you need them! Makes for a much more comfortable and safer ride.
Great informative video! I have to agree, this one is the best on this subject in my search for info on shield replacement. Liked and Subscribed! When installing new shield, can you transfer the original vent to new one? New to the wing world as of 3 days ago, 2008 GL18.
AllieAussie, hey, sorry for just now getting back to you. It's been a crazy year which pulled me away from You Tube. Yes, the vents are pretty universal, hope you found that out by now. Glad the video helped out and hope that you are enjoying your wing. They are nice bikes.
Hi Mike, Thank you for the video, I’m learning with your other vídeos, I have exactly the same motorcycle, it’s beautiful, quick question, can you give me exactly the information of your passenger arm rest please, I love the looks the black and no chrome Thank you and keep riding that beautiful motorcycle
Victor, sorry for not getting back sooner... The Day Job has been crazy with all the extra "overhead" going on these days. The arm rests I use are standard chromed Kuryakyn Arm rest that I disassembled and took to a painter to have them powder coated. I also had the foot brake lever done at the same time. Yeah, I've been trying to do everything as either black or gold and trying to get rid of any chrome I can. I'm currently working on a black luggage rack that I'm customizing replacing the black rubber center insert with a wooden insert veneered with some exotic wood. Thanks for your comments and I'll work to keep more in touch with happenings on the channel
Hey!! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Yes, the same works here with the earlier models. The only difference is the windscreen itself; the earlier models have 5 mounting points on the windscreen where the newer ones only have three. By mount points I'm speaking about the sliders that the windscreen is attached to and allow it to stay square as the windshield slides up and down. My opinion here is that if you have five mounting points and the windscreen you want only has three slots, you can remove the two "middle" sliders on either side. You can do this by removing the dash (visor) and remove the sliders by popping off the circlip holding the two halves together. Hope that helps, let me know if that's not clear.
Hey... Sorry for not getting back sooner. Things have been so nuts lately! So yes, I did place a grounding block next to the fuse block. I ran a 12 gauge primary wire from a "buss bar" I purchased and grounded it on the engine. The grounding point is on the right side of the engine. You can see it by removing the side cover where you would service the engine oil. You can see it referenced in this pic at "G2" www.goldwingfacts.com/threads/gl1800-wont-start-only-a-click.610705/#lg=thread-610705&slide=3 Buss Bar Used - www.amazon.com/dp/B07C55B8LB/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_F0KC8N64PJ1PY198HNHG
Jimmy, Hey sorry, been away for a bit picking up a Bike in San Antonio and on vacation in Florida. Anyway, yes you're right, the plug is for heated seats. All Wings between 2007(?) and 2016 come with seat and grip heat on the basic package. I have a custom seat from Diamond on my 2016 and they offered a heat package which I took advantage of.
Jo, basically but you'll need to remove the speaker grills separately and then remove two pins and two hex bolts I believe from under the speaker grill area. The rest should be the same.
Great tutorial. In fact it's the best I've seen on the GL1800 windscreen removal procedure. Thanks for the great camera perspectives also. BTW: Whay year is that Wing?
Two quick points: 1: are those JIS or Philips screws? and 2: great time to clean that gutter at the point where the windshield comes to the dash, I haven't been able to get at mine any other way.
Terry, To be honest, I don't know the exact spec. JIS are smaller headed screws but take a Philips screw driver to loosen and tighten so I'll just refer to them sa Philips. Since the Goldwings are designed in Japan I would imagine that JIS would apply. For those new to JIS, you can check out the detail here: ring-plug-thread-gages.com/ti-Article-JIS.pdf
@@MikesGoldwingGarage Really nice job. I am going to take mine to a local guy who does classic Porsches and MB. Lets see how much this pleasure would be. How much was yours total? Did they replace or modify the guts too? Gel seat......structure changes ?
@mike's goldwing garage Have you ever removed the side/front cowling? The left-side side/front cowling (part over the radiator) on my 2015 (Level 3) GL1800 was damaged and I need to remove it for repair and painting. I have the Honda Service Manual; but, I'm uncertain if I can remove only the left side or must I remove the entire front section as a whole.
Forrest, Sorry for not getting back sooner. I hope you were able to get through this okay and get back on the road. I have removed the front cowling but both time that I've done that it's always been as one piece. If I recall there are linkages that keep the headlights in sync and in the long run it just makes it easier if you work on that part as a whole off the bike. Once removed you open up a ton of room to get in there and get things done quickly without any hassle.
