How to Remove the Goldwing's Top Left Shelter

In order to access almost anything in the faring area, you will need to remove the Goldwing's Top Left Shelter. In this video I'll take you through that process and will also explain how to remove the Left Pocket, left molding, the audio panel and the top center shelter which in order to complete this will also have to be removed. You will also need to have the meter panel removed and for that I've included a link to the video I have created to accomplish that.

@mike's goldwing garage Have you ever removed the side/front cowling? The left-side side/front cowling (part over the radiator) on my 2015 (Level 3) GL1800 was damaged and I need to remove it for repair and painting. I have the Honda Service Manual; but, I'm uncertain if I can remove only the left side or must I remove the entire front section as a whole.

Forrest, Sorry for not getting back sooner. I hope you were able to get through this okay and get back on the road. I have removed the front cowling but both time that I've done that it's always been as one piece. If I recall there are linkages that keep the headlights in sync and in the long run it just makes it easier if you work on that part as a whole off the bike. Once removed you open up a ton of room to get in there and get things done quickly without any hassle.

Hi Mike. Mine is a 2009 UK spec GW with the airbag. Is the principle for removal exactly the same? Thanks

Sorry I'm not familiar with that model and don't have any hands on knowledge of the location of the airbag components. That being said, I can't imagine there would be anything under the side fairing that would be part of that system. If you own a shop manual, those components and references should point out anything that may be different from my process.

This is completely different on the earlier 1800 Goldwings and the top shelter is one piece and not a left or right shelter. The video shows the procedure on a 2016 model ?

James Yes, the 2012 to 2017 models have a modular top shelter and will be different. You will notice those differences as you review the shop manual and I highly recommend that anyone diving this deep into a wing have one and reference one just as I do every time I work on my bike. It's only good maintenance practice.
