Dedicated to all things hobby farm ANIMAL related! I share useful tidbits about hobby farm animals and teach helpful information for raising + caring for these animals well!
Always found it interesting that a lot of animals that live in herds, packs or flocks, there's usually a dominant male or female that gets first dibs on all food and everyone else waits their turn (we used to raise bison and the bull and his favorite cow were always the first to eat or drink). But chickens are different. The rooster aggressively defends his hens, to the death if necessary, and any food that is found, he makes sure they get it.
The roost is too narrow. A 2 X 4 with the long side up so they are flat footed to keep their feet warm and they rest their breast bone on the plank. Round they can get frostbite and fall off.
How did the safeguard work for the tapeworm infection in your? My chickens have tapeworms, I warmed them with Val bazan and it seemed to work the first time but six weeks later they had them again. Do you have any advice?
Did you get your rid of yours? We have been dealing with tapeworms for months. We have tried safeguard and praziquantel a couple of times, and nothing seems to be working!
@@deedeeholbrook5308 Yes, I think so, it seems the Valbazin Albendazole, works if you with hold feed for 24 hours before worming. The will starve to death in about 48 hours with out the medication, worms can not store energy, and actually that is how the wormer works it blocks the worm from absorption of food.
@@deedeeholbrook5308 Do your chickens eat night crawlers or meal worms? I wonder if chickens eating night crawlers and the tapeworms segments are in the night crawlers and that's what we see passed in the chicken poop , at times not always.
I had 2 vets work with me on the tapeworm problem& it has never resolved! They continue to thrive but I still see the worms every few weeks. I have chosen to raise my younger flock in another location away from the birds with the issue. Will be interesting to see if the thing ones end up picking it up anyway (from nightcrawlers etc) or not.
I just bought 6 baby chicks 3 are the same breed and two others are the same breed there’s one that is a different breed I’ve noticed that she pecks at the others and she does the distress chirp. She keeps trying to get out. The brooder isn’t small all the other chicks are really calm. One I get her out and hold her she relaxes and falls asleep but I know I can’t keep doing that because I’m afraid she will get cold. I don’t know what to do any recommendations?
Just checked my 2 roosters and found lice lurking on his feathers located on his neck area.. so I'm guessing my 5 hens also have it but i have yet to check them.
Dealing with this right now with a new chicken we brought home. She’s in bad shape, large nit sacs. We treated her and it’s been 8 days. I have not seen any lice on her but still lots of sacs. How do I remove? Is she ok to join the rest of the flock? I treated her with elector psp (one time treatment, it kills all lice and eggs).
I'm surprised they didn't kill it and eat it! My 3 backyard chickens had mice come into the coop to steal their food. Both times they caught a mouse they just broke its back and left it to starve to death in the coop unless I'd find it later
I finally used equimax - dosage is 0.03ml per pound of weight or 0.15ml for a 5lb bird. Available at TS (tractor supply). Worked very well. Use a 1 ml syringe - without the needle - given in mouth - repeat single dose in 10-14 days.
Yes they are all clear. They became way more active after. Their molting now so they are a little cranky. I'd say it worked well. I did one dose each and another 10 days later. @@TrueBlueStablesLLC
Just lost our silkie rooster today and found lice on him. No signs of the egg clusters and no dirty bottom. Just a mess of creepy crawlies. Hoping that they don't get the rest because he had 0 symptoms yesterday
Love this coop! We had trouble deciding between building one like yours and another with a saltbox style roof, so we built yours with a saltbox style roof instead and it's awesome! Thank you for the inspiration! Such a beautiful and functional coop!
