A culture that doesn't adapt, develop and find a contemporary footing is dead, or in a best case scenario just an echo from the past. Our heritage is very much alive to us - it's not something that just exists in the past, or that requires dressing up in traditional clothes for reenactment gatherings. Our aim has always been to build a bridge between now and then, and bring relevant parts of the culture into today's world. There is wisdom to be learned from, achievements to be inspired by and an entire cultural treasure to embrace. That is the way to become a modern Viking, a Viking at heart!
Our goal is met through a combination of scholarly knowledge and expert crafting skills being added to a deep lifelong interest in Viking culture. You can find information, inpsiration and unique Viking products with us - both historical and modern interpretations. Visit us at www.grimfrost.com!
I was blessed to see him yesterday at Red Rocks in Colorado. I am a 73 year old Death Midwife and Wardruna resonates with me. I was so cold, shivered through the show, but my soul danced. Oh, how it danced.
The whole framing of viking warriors as "elites" . . . like, yes, in a sense--in the sense that they were on top of their societies. The same way that people who are willing to murder, rob, and burgle are at the top of any criminal society. But that doesn't mean vikings were like posh aristocrats. More just like dominant gangsters in what was otherwise a relatively poor society. You had your rich kings, sure. But every norsemen who went to battle was posh? No way.
And to elaborate on that point: they were at the top of *their own* society. But they weren't at the top of civilized society. They were living contemporaneously with full fledged civilizations like Byzantium and the Carolingian Empire, which were richer and more refined.
Ben is barely old enough to drink, let alone have well defined theories or ideas about the Viking age. He reminds me of one of these kids that is way to far into European Sword Techniques for his own good. I do not place much stock in Academics, particularly this modern ilk with their odd socialist ideas that they continue to foist upon the past. I have had to choke through far to many theories on Vikings being black, or Muslim, or anything other than who they actually were.
There’s no actual accounts or findings, yet!, that the boys were trained for war like the stories of spartan boys taken from their families at the age of eight to start their training. It’s always important to say yet when looking for Viking history, new scientific developments on how to decipher and understand newer findings and all findings going back over them. There’s also developing the ability to look at the past before the influence of the christen church and how an entire society already had their beliefs. Can we as a modern mind that’s heavily influenced by religion weather you’re religious or not. It’s in our government and schools so can one remove that train of thought and try to understand how they thought about society and peoples roles with in it. How complex could structure get? I found the guest a little stiff at first. But seem to find his pass a bit after the half way mark.
Love this podcast. A wish for a future guest, Cat Jarman. The English/Norwegian bioarchaeologist and author of the great book River Kings. She's been working a lot with the Great Heathen Army Winter Camp in Repton. Would love to hear you dive into that.
I think but not sure. Ones a thrall was set free. They still where not 100 % part of the social world and did not have the same rights. Only their childeren became full accepted
Loved this episode. I can see children assuming adult roles in the viking world. Children were given much responsiblity in the old days. They lived up to expectations. They were tough. They grew up fast. I see farm kids doing adult jobs and acting like adults. Kids are incredible. Ben looks like he could be a member of Amon Amarth. 🤘 And thank you for your service, Johan. 😊 I look forward to the next episode. 👍
Shoutout from CANADA!🇨🇦 Thank you both for this opportunity to explore this subject matter from scholars in the field, as well as those of us who have interest and ethnic origins spanning throughout Scandinavia, as there are millions living within our country! As Ben pointed out, many are surprised to hear of our university programs exploring and offering Human Evolutionary Studies Programs (HESP) to both domestic and international students. I too am fortunate to have wandered down a similar path and studied Anthropology/Archaeology at British Columbia universities, as well as the University of Alberta. Great universities in both provinces, as they offer a similar structure to European universities, making the transition for us to transfer from Canadian universities to those within Europe and the international community, and vice versa. I truly appreciate your intellectual probing and questioning of topics pertaining to this extremely fascinating subject! Cheers!🇨🇦❤🇸🇪

I loved this interview (and the whole series actually)! So many interesting questions you raised there. I was also happy to see Ben in your podcast after seeing him on History TV 😃 Looking forward to seeing Amon Amarth again in Romania!
Hi there! My sister and niece were there over Christmas…they enjoyed their time visiting your beautiful country! I was blessed to see the videos and pictures they took while there. They also mentioned that the people were extremely friendly and open to them! Cheers!🇨🇦😊🇩🇴
As a Norman, it's very touching to see how Clive learned about our History. It would also be amazing to put his ideas on screen, I really hope it happens someday 🤞🏻Thank you for this video!
I only discovered now that ye make little videos and songs! I loooove it! Initially, I came across ye through Jackson Crawford! Any plans for a physical CD?😊
Þat mælti mín móðir: at mér skyldi kaupa Fley ok fagrar árar Fara á brott með víkingum, fara á brott með víkingum Standa upp í stafni, stýra dýrum knerri Halda svá til hafnar Höggva mann ok annan, höggva mann ok annan

Really fantastic, so happy The Clan has gone into regular podcasts and great looking RU-vid Viking Hall of Wise Words. Skål. I wish I didn’t have to live on my veterans pension in Australia and medically retired. Yet descendants from a Viking family name and followed the old ways in my chosen job and all the males in my family way back. To be able to travel and walk the grounds and see some stone circles and rune stones. Try bring back Grimfrost honey mead as I wish I could find it here in Australia. Now over 50 it looks harder to travel as lost 14 yr marriage and 2 kids leaving me. Bit how I would love to full that pull I’ve had for so many years. Learning old Norse, my second youngest now is. High school history teacher that specialty is the Norse. The older ones love him to wear his tunic and pants he has got from following me through Grimfrost. I hope to help get him some more kit, but wants me to visit the class in my full kit with sword and Dane axe, some games to show and my so well made Grimfrost cloths jewellery, weapons and house gear.. I do enjoy studying the runes and the eddas and Futhark and understanding its putting the consciousness of the action into the Rune (symbol) as which I’ve found would be the most interesting way runes possibly helped develop into divination and magik ! Only a thought of a Brocken old soldier, that still has strong connection to the old ways. Skål (I hope I’ve not sounded to of track to your great guest) 🫡🪖🇦🇺
Someone please help me! My dad showed me a viking movie once. It was about an english warrior and after his first battle, he swears to never pick up or use his sword again. That's all I remember! My dad doesn't remember this movie and he think's I dreamt, but I swear it is real!
