It's not easy keeping your living space free of mold if your farming off grid in a tropical island with so many plants and so much moisture in the air and soil, experimenting with baking soda mixture on parts of the property will help you try to gain control are there any mushroom growing by your composting pile or anywhere on property ' ?') ...I heard mixing of dish soap & water with baking soda helps even bear & water with baking soda spray on plants and veggie garden works for mold and as a natural pesticide and herbicide or something like that .

Hi I’m currently living in Los Angeles but I’m not happy. I’m happy watching your videos. I want to retire around your area with my husband. I don’t have much money to spend so can you let me know how much you spend on building your house. I can afford the land because I check online.

Hawaiian Acres is cheap cause it’s underdeveloped, very rural and close to a volcano. There will be lava in the yard( wear slippers),critters in the veggies (even packaged veggies from the mainland get pulled off the shelves in the stores), humidity is high so salt melts(store in bins with uncooked rice), fruit from the mainland is picked half ripe cause it has to be shipped over thus another high fee gets tacked on( enjoy local fruits) and crime rate is high due to all the druggies that hang out in rural areas cause it’s harder for law enforcement to catch them ( homelessness and drug addiction is high all over the entire state). Anyone planning to move here( any island) should make a couple of trips here and really research the areas they plan to put their roots down and purchase. Examine the pros and cons of living in Hawaii cause no matter what; it’s the price one pays to live in paradise. I would sell my house(Kailua, Oahu)and move to the Big Island at the drop of a dime but my son has health issues and the hospital is 5 minutes from home and medical facilities there are miles away and ill equipped for his medical condition. Enjoy what is given freely… a gorgeous rainbow, a smile from a passerby, beautiful weather most of the time and a laid back lifestyle.

Actually you can go barefoot just need to get your feet tough and that might take awhile, still need to go slowly. Wool doesn't mold as much and can use tapa cloth instead of fabric. Rat lung is a problem but I need to make it a raised bed and wash everything really good with produce wash. Have a dog and fence yard around your property and home, post beware of dog and no trespassing. Puna s rough but we're all Gods children he just painted us a different color. Always use best judgement and intelligence.

Bro have you considered using a hedge trimmer for clearing it can kinda get after some of the smaller strawberry guava and you have alot more control so it basically make accidentally girdling trees a non issue it also works well with cane grass and you can kinda fine chop in aluhe also never have to buy string

To naturally get rid of Hawaiian fire ants in a jungle garden, you can use the following methods: 1. **Boiling Water:** Pouring boiling water directly onto the ant nests can kill the ants on contact. Be cautious with this method to avoid damaging nearby plants. 2. **Diatomaceous Earth:** This natural, non-toxic powder is made from fossilized algae. When sprinkled around the garden, it can dehydrate and kill ants by damaging their exoskeletons. Reapply after rain. 3. **Neem Oil:** Neem oil is a natural insecticide that can disrupt the life cycle of ants. Mix neem oil with water and spray it around the garden, focusing on ant trails and nests. 4. **Citrus Peels:** Citrus oils are toxic to ants. Place citrus peels around the garden or blend them into a spray with water and use it around ant-infested areas. 5. **Borax and Sugar Bait:** Mix equal parts of borax and sugar, then place the mixture in small containers around the garden. The ants are attracted to the sugar and will carry the mixture back to their nest, where the borax will poison them. Be cautious using this method if you have pets or children, as borax can be harmful if ingested. 6. **Vinegar Solution:** A 50/50 mix of vinegar and water can disrupt ant trails and kill ants on contact. Spray it directly onto ants and their paths. 7. **Nematodes:** Beneficial nematodes are microscopic worms that can be introduced into the soil. They hunt and kill ants by releasing bacteria that infect and kill them. This is a long-term, natural solution. 8. **Regular Garden Maintenance:** Keep your garden free of food scraps and standing water, and regularly trim vegetation to reduce shelter for ants. Applying a combination of these methods can be more effective, especially in a jungle environment where fire ants can be persistent.

@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 22 дня назад
The most common papaya here are solo and strawberry which are both smaller and sweeter varieties. They are both excellent but I personally like the strawberry more. There is also a variety called exotica that we grow which has an interesting story about how it came to this island. It is also very good and has larger fruit.

Cut nut can be propagated from cuttings. Its someone shade tolerant and its often interplanted with pili nut to assist climbing into the canopy to harvest. Im a big proponent of tango because it helps the black ants to outcompete the fire ants. After one or two years of tango application the black ants are fully established and help keep the fire ant population in check. The black ants actively seek and destroy fire ant eggs(and eat them). Then tango can be applied less frequently. Amdro is much more toxic to the ecological system imo. Thanks for another informative video. The 3 of you have saved us homesteaders from making all the newbie mistakes..........well maybe not all of them 😅

We live in HPP. Our place isn’t near this dense and plentiful. But we do grow 80% of our veggies in containers. Works great. But boy is this property a dream. We are slowly throwing down lots of mulch and chop n dropping. Lots of fruit trees that produce ok. Not great but we do get enough. When I watch these videos, I think to myself “why is this so rare?” We are in time in human history that scared me. I only will be around for a short time, but my kids and their kids, and their kids, kids and so forth have to live in it. Having a piece of land to live on and live off of should be something that every single person should have access to and benefit from. Just crazy how dependent the world is to buying food 100% of the time.

I appreciate this tour, and totally respect not wanting to use anything on fruiting plants (for fire ants). However, Hawaii Ant Lab says "The insect growth regulator, Tango (methoprene), affects the reproductive system of queens and is labeled for use on fruit trees and around food crops. Tango is a liquid that must be mixed into a bait to be attractive to the ants." Is this information incorrect?
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 27 дней назад
On the bottle of tango it says to not spray it on fruiting trees/plants. This is the information we got from wade.
@malamaainapermaculture9912
@malamaainapermaculture9912 26 дней назад
Tango can be used on fruit trees but according to the label not while the trees actually have fruit on them. Bananas and papayas almost always have fruit on them so almost never safe to spray. Many other fruit trees have fruit on them half the year is some stage of development. I believe label also reccomendeds a specific distance that is safe from vegetable crops. I have used antix which is rated organic and spinosad based and is granular, which one might explore as an alternative.

This video is a gem. Much wisdom and evidence of growing our own food in Hawaii while we still can. Growing edible pandam but didn't properly identify it until watching this video. Your living fence post is brilliant. Used to grow panax with my father as a young child while growing up at Pepeekeo Mill Camp. I plan on duplicating what you're sharing. The roots of the herb plants intertwine with milkweed roots in the soil. I'm making an educated guess that the toxins from the milkweed don't transfer into the herb roots. Let me know. In need of much needed space in my garden and would start planting herbs and veges with milkweed too. How are you preparing for the onset of CRB in your own food forest and where do you source credible information? Just learned I grow all four crops this beetle thrives on. I'm just starting to deep dive into everything CRB and looking for knowledgeable leads.

@@OffGridHawaiiMy spouse remembers his mother cooking pandam in rice. He wasn't a big fan of the flavor so I haven't utilized it in our cooking yet but I still grow it. My vanilla vines kept declining in the past six years so this year I'm growing it differently. The pandam will now be my go to vanilla substitute.
