I think its really amazing you guys show the bad experiences also, it helps me alot to know that it happens to alot of people and sort of encourages me to continue taking care of my trees and not to give up. In Trinidad and Tobago, i have to deal with leaf cutter ants every single three months and every year swarms of locusts that eats everything clean off. Thank god the trees survived and I kept going, love ur videos

I am omnivorous, so pigs on my property would be a plus. I am glad to see you are getting a fence up. You have put too much time and hard work into your farm to have pigs destroy it. Glad to see y'all are doing ok and progressing. Take care.

we also had major pig issues then decided on a fence, same as yours and it worked 100%. killing the pigs was never an option for us (and doesn't work for others anyway). the pigs don't even try to barge the fence or anything. 200 papaya trees sounds awesome to me! ;) nice video.

You guys definitely need to look into running line electric fencing around your place...animals stay out. Try running 3 or 4 lines...much cheaper than welded wire or other post fencing ❤

The pigs dont care. They walk right over the electric fences for a tasty snack.

Ahhh...I can't imagine you would be able to get a good ground to even shock them with all that rock...How would you even drive a ground rod into that stuff?
@azhhkffzq7465
@azhhkffzq7465 5 лет назад
@@michellegeiger2548 People will usually bury a grounding wire along the surface of the ground. They work good for horses and common stock but pigs are voracious. Most people just shoot them they are such a problem.

I live in Mountain View. Have the same problem with boars. I bought two solar light repellant devices from Amazon. It makes a noise, that most animals don't like and flashes a light as well. I had two different pigs coming to my yard with bunch of babies. When I insole them I though the pig was gone. But, it was sleeping under the tree and I didn't see it. So when I turned the noise on, it Ren like crazy and didn't come back since. It's been a week.

Buy a Crossbow. No noise, no pigs, but lots of great meat! cheeper than a gun and you don't have to ask the neighbors about the noise.

An idea for a video: you talk about your fruit trees being your long-term investment. What is your plan for selling fruit? How much can a person make to live on by doing this? Maybe interview a person or two who it doing the same.

Ain't no puppies messing with no pigs, they know better..pigs kill dogs, even strong pig hunting dogs get injured. They are often aggressive, and they can bite through bone. That spinach is a fav, love that you can just poke branch cuttings into the ground to propagate that, like so many other tropical plants. Never was so easy to grow a food forest than in Hawaii. I often fed xtra papayas to my ducks and the worms in the worm bin love them. They add richness to the compost pile as well. But the trees get old and leggy and stop producing larger fruits after a few years so starting new trees can be good. Your fruit will be bigger. ;) Love your videos, you guys are so lucky!! I lived on Maui but looking to explore Big I in the future. Loving what you're doing on the land. I also had a lot of issues with regular sugar ants that would dig into my seed pots and eat my seeds I was trying to start...EVERY TIME, with certain seeds they wanted to eat I guess. I figured out I could sprinkle cinnamon around a lot of things and they wouldn't touch it, we could have banana bread wrapped in plastic at our fruit stand and they wouldn't even come chew through it. I will say cayenne pepper works amazing for rats.
@qualqui

Well, wild pigs, are they because many people set them free to forage and then come fall, they go out and harvest them or did they just run off and turn wild?That's a bummer, but I must say with all the damage done your food forest is still AWESOME, thinking how it was before the pig problem. And the list of plants for sale, Jaboticaba, I recently learned of this tree? It gives black berries but instead of producing on the branches, the berries are produced on the trunk? That would be so cool to have, none up here on the central plateau but plenty of exotic fruits to be found in the State of Nayarit, on the pacific coast.Thanks for yet another interesting upload Paulina and Michael, greetings from Querétaro. :)

We have a big problem with pigs... they propínate fast... we’ve had at least 7 generations coming into our Aina and after the cute wore off we decided to finish our fencing. They wreck everything with their routing. To avoid fencing... I’m afraid a beebee gun is the most compassionate answer... doesn’t kill them but does give them a sting they’ll remember. Go to Prince Kuhio Mall to Walmart or the fishing tackle and hunting store next to Hawaiian Style on Manono or, the one in Curtis Town. Best price is Walmart if they have them. Good luck. If you really do want to bring home the bacon... try bow and arrow. Traps don’t work because they smell the previous animals caught in it. OK... you’re doing T posts and Hotwire!!! Might be a necessary expense. My Pitt mixes from Keaau shelter did keep them off... they’d hear them come and chase them barking all the way ... before they could injury the dogs!

I've got a question for you about growing an elevation in your area? Seems like I've heard from a few people that approximately 1000 feet elevation is the most optimal growing elevation and if you go up too much higher you won't be able to grow some foods. What kind of foods and not be grown at about 1500 feet elevation? Mahalo for your time and consideration
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 5 лет назад
It’s hard to say because there are so many different micro climates. Even at the same elevation there can be differences. Best thing to do is to ask around to your neighbors to see what they are having luck with. Usually the same things grow up to 1500 but not as well. One thing for sure is no coconuts above 1000.

It's complex basically depends on where you go and your openness and determination to fit in. In the case of Europe this is at the heart of much soul searching. The recent murder of a school teacher by somebody who was granted refugee status. He couldn't accept France's openness to all faiths and so on. I guess those of us in western countries can largely travel, before the virus, where we want and the wealthy can live where they want. Obviously most of the world can't do this and so we have so much economic migration. In my own case I had to sell my father's farm house in Wales, a country that makes up the U.K. Growing up it was farmers and a few hippies but forty years on it's people who are wealthy selling their city homes to live the "rural dream". I find most of these people a bit of a joke. I mean they aren't really farmers or country people but who am I to judge. I suppose it can be their arrogance and money that angers the locals. I would see Hawaii as very American and westernised so it isn't as if you have to learn the language and so on. Maybe I'm wrong. It seems you are in a bit of a bind: in the sense that you have to present an idyllic image of the place for the youtube audience but that's created people wanting to come and you feel responsible. I guess emphasising the real issues living there, as you did, is the only way to go. Ultimately people are responsible for their own decisions.

Why don't you organize a pig hunt? Pigs will overpopulate and carry diseases...while if you control their populations, not only do you often have some good meat, but you can protect your plantings.
