LOL 7.5 minutes into it you finally get your fro in there! I was like, “Dude, where is that fro…ooh there it is!” Also, if you make yourself a couple of fatter wedges from scrap wood or branches you’re not using, when you lay the log down in its side they can REALLY help you drive separation. A couple of fatter wedges could definitely spare you a bit of effort. Unsolicited advice, take it or leave it :-). Thumbs on the vid!
Yeah this was by no means a master class on splitting a log by hand lol. This may have been the hardest log I’ve ever tired to split , very twisted. I have a few wooden wedges but I could definitely make more. Thanks for watching ❤️
Thanks for some new spoon blanking techniques. The number of times I would have ruined that spoon with my axe skills 😂😂😂 I have a couple new approaches to try. Maybe a little less firewood in the future!
I have a question for you sir,I'm just a novelist spoon carver,I have been carving black walnut spoons and some people have said not to eat or cook with black walnut spoons because could be toxic I say crap.what do you say sir.thanks
Just curious....I am new at making spoons and was wondering if this was green wood? When I split my firewood in the winter I am always finding really pretty pieces and now wonder if I could have used them? Since I only heat with wood I always have a huge supply but it is seasoned about a year. Maybe it matters the kind of wood? most of mine is hard wood. Good for heating, but maybe not for carving? Being new I do not want to start with wood that is terribly hard to carve and get frustrated. Thank you.
This piece was stored as a log with the ends painted for 1.5 years or so. It loses moisture more slowly that way so it was simi green. Depending on the wood species and how dry it is will depend on how hard it to carve. I’m mostly carving hard woods but generally not anything super dry. If it’s too dry most hardwood are going to be a lot more work than it’s worth. You could always try carving something small and see how it feels.
@@modestgreenwoodcarving2899 Thank you painting the ends is a good idea! and easy. I like your videos, spoon carving videos are a rabbit hole, so I only watch a couple of people.
I agree and most of my videos are music free this is I think the second time I’ve used music. Just wanted to play around and try new stuff, but I appreciate the feedback. It’s easier to not deal with copyrights and whatnot 😂
Great video I to have a modest shop witch don't use any more because it's in my basement and now mainly in a wheelchair due to a bone diease in feet.now do it on front porch carving spoons and crochet hooks.you are an inspiration to me to keep going.thanks
Interesujący film. Świetnie dobrana muzyka. Ja też, amatorsko, strugam łyżki z drewna. Właśnie jestem w trakcie robienia podobnej, jak na filmie. Tylko dużo mniejszej. Pozdrawiam z Polski.
Beautiful.. beautiful.. If you want a brojen heart, now try selling it and then work out your hourly rate. I always cut my own throat to make sales. Depending on a few different factors many markets can be hit and miss regards expected pricing. I found more purity and cathsrsis in gifting items to loved ones. I saw the wisdom in gifting items to the bitch mother in law and folk who might not "deserve" a spoon. When in fact they are the one's that "need" the love more eh
It’s gotta be more than 20 at least maybe even 30. Rough shaping I did over 3 days putting several hours each day. Another few hours in the finishing cuts. Just put oil on it today though
Ive carved, sold and gifted out approximately 3000 spoons n spatulas in my 10 years at it. Whilst I dont carve any more, its still heart warming to know that they are still out there being used, (and will almost certainly be in human hands and food long after I'm free of this body).
Been checking ye vids out buddy,, i subbed in too.. depending on when you decide to have a break/ rest,, using hand tools can be devastating to ones hands/ tendons/ wrists and elbows. And whilst my back is fucked ( tumour on my spine, nothing to do with green woodworking),, i believe that the Akido wrist and hand stretches that i did multiple times every day allowed them to withstand the punishment i used to give them without long lasting injuries. You might well know this, but green wood, ( fresh cut wet wood) carves a 1000% easier than seasoned wood. There's both pros n cons to carving wet wood vs seasoned wood . The block you are splitting here sounds super seasoned.
My back is ultra jiggered forevermore now but spent ten years carving spoons spatulas n bowls . Green Ash and sycamore were my favourite woods to work with. Keep up the stellar efforts mate,,. Mind your back ay. Say. What country are you in?
The adze is mostly ment for rough work but if you wanted to have that rough texture this would be a good way. You could achieve a similar texture with gouges, that would leave a much cleaner finish😊
@@modestgreenwoodcarving2899 see, the beautiful thing about wood in a bio active enclosure is that it decomposes and it’s perfect for growing vine type plants, mosses and lichens to grab onto And the the way you’re chipping the wood it’s almost like there’s little layers for all sorts of roots and stuff to hold on to
@@modestgreenwoodcarving2899 in my opinion if you’re looking for a long term tank you probably want wood as a backdrop instead of gorilla glue or expanding foam as most people in the hobby like to use
Oh I didn’t realize you ment to put it inside. In that case the rough finish would be perfect , plus the wood is green and still full of moisture. I don’t know much about terrariums but it this idea sounds interesting to me
@@modestgreenwoodcarving2899 well if you ever do want to get into terrariums or aquariums you have woodworking skills and that goes a long way. But I must warn you, it’s a super addictive hobby and I bet even more so for someone who already builds stuff lol
