The Roofing Channel is the destination for people navigating the roofing process. It is our goal to make sure that the buyer is well-informed while they are navigating the roofing process. We upload videos every Wednesday that covers three main topics: Industry advice, information for homeowners, and general roofing knowledge.
What do you think of concrete roofs that are usable. In Asia, many homes have roof decks, they have 4 ft privacy walls, and the whole space is usable as a place to lounge, BBQ, and gather. It's really hard to find homes like this that are for a family of 4. I only find large or mansion type homes with this.
We do have that smell in our attic and think it's from mold. Can poor attic ventilation cause mold? There is ventilation but I don't think there is enough.
These videos are absolutely brilliant. Awesome little bite-size pieces of knowledge that are well-presented and edited. I've heard that shingles can blister because of heat caused by a poorly ventilated attic slowly cooking them from below and then the hot sun baking the surface of the shingle.
We just had our house reroofed and the company no only replaced all the vents with new and better ones, they also put in a few additional ones. The company is owned by a neighbor and he told me he would treat my house like he does his.
Very good video, thank you. Unfortunately we average joe people assume that architects that design the home know all this stuff and also assume and have faith that building inspector would catch any thing improper too but believe me after having one house built in now know you can put your trust and faith into anyone.
It is very sad we can't take people for their word like we used to. That's why it's super important that if you are wanting to buy a home, you have it inspected fully beforehand so you don't have any surprises.
I have USAA, had hail damage this past weekend on an entire side of my house. They don't make that siding anymore color wise for the vinyl. They said they "May not" replace other than that damaged side. Umm, it won't match then what I have, what can I do? Please help. I'm in Missouri.
sir what if the attic is either enclosed and insulated along the walls? would you still recommend venting over sealing the the area and just cooling it with the hvac? i've always kinda like the turbine vents just cause they give you a visual feedback on if they are working, clogged, or rusted to the point of inoperable. but either way if we turn that attic into a functional loft/storage room i for one would prefer to cool it along with the central air unit rather than leave it crazy hot and only just do the bare minimum to wisk away the heat buildup to avoid damaging. am i wrong? would this be a mistake if i were to implement something like that? just to clarify i'm not advocating throwing some insolation on the attic floor and then sealing it off. i'm advocating sealing it off after insolating the ceiling walls of the attic so that it basically becomes a sudo second floor or loft. i'm guessing that would keep it cool enough to avoid damage to the interior but i duno about the tiles and roof itself. having all that cool air in there would act to cool it a bit, but the insolation wouldn't allow much of the heat to transfer so it might just bake under the suns rays. i'm not a roofer but very interested in learning more. ty for any advice.
If you have no intake venting (soffits), that's an issue in itself. You would have to cut some out if possible. Once that is complete, add a solar powered fan and you should be good to go.
@@Arcticatticfl i get why that would be important if the attic was uninsulated but if the attic roof was insolated, sheet rocked and turned into effectively a small 2nd story why would it need to be vented with soffits or fans? it would basically be the same as any interior room at that point which makes me wonder why it needs exterior venting when i don't think any exterior facing rooms have venting holes cut into them. i'm not understanding the why i guess and that's the most important component for me in understanding. why bother cutting in vents to let out air if you already have it insolated and cooled via an hvac system? to a laymen like myself that sounds like if this rule of thumb is true than shouldn't we also be needing to cut holes into all exterior facing rooms for the same reasons?
We have a metal roof and we LOVE it. What we don't love are some of the neighbors complaining about glare. Is there a spray or something we can put on the roof to cut down the glare? Thanks so much.
I had to finally get a public adjuster to help: insurance refused to test my roof for asbestos & even though it was presented to them: I didn’t realize I could have a second adjuster come. Finally public adjuster got done, but at great $$ loss to me as they charged big fee: I think insurance company was dishonest as they actually refused to test asbestos & claimed could tell by looking & they were wrong. Roof being repaired & interior walls with mold finally being addressed, but at significant loss to me
If you're seeing old slate, expect it to be at the end of its life. It holds up very well. In upstate NY where I am I take care of a building that has some slate that I believe is from the late 1800s still. It's very thin at this point but still doing the job.
Your roof estimate venting is bullcrap! Check your attic! If no existent issue with moisture so not i stall any bullcrap they have to offer. 9/10 times they put in ridge vent because it’s easy without calculating the area needed to match soffit vents. They can create a huge problem that didn’t need creating. don’t be a fool and fall for the line.. Ridge vent is the best. It is the best IF and only IF the NFA of the soffit and ridge vent are balanced and sized for the sq footage of your attic.
