Slate Roofs Pros and Con 

I'm a Slater and roofer in the UK, mostly working on conservation projects in and around London, I've been doing this for almost forty years. If you are considering getting a natural slate roof, then selecting the right type of slates is critical, as is the quarry from where they are sourced. Even within a single slate quarry they will generally have three grades of slate, from the best to the most economic, in addition, they will come in various sizes and thickness's. It is important to check that your roof structure will adequately support the proposed load. Fixings are critical, choose the best nails and other fixings. Ventilation is also critical and in many cases counter battening will be required to allow free air flow between the under felt (Sarking felt) and the insulation (warm roof installations), whatever your circumstance, careful attention to the ventilation should be made at the planning stage and installation process. Flashings, box gutters and all other metal work should also be carefully considered, lead, copper, stainless steel and Zinc are preferable. Even if you live out side of the UK, the guidance given in B.S. 5534 (British Standard code of practice for slate and tiled roofs) (available on line) is a very good starting point, it will help you with design, product selection and installation. Remember, this is not a project for beginners, there are many many things to consider, both in design and installation especially with more complex roof designs.

Synthetic slate is light doesnt crack and looks just like slate, my neighbours cant tell the difference
