DISCLAIMER: I am not a University-educated historian, Alex the Historian was a nickname I got while working at Disneyland as a tour guide. After 7 years of using it as a stage name for my channel, it would be detrimental to the channel to suddenly change the name.
Over these past few months, I've been becoming more and more of a Queen Mary fan. I used to staunchly sing the praises of the Normandie and the Queen Elizabeth and poke fun at the Mary, but now I realise just how iconic she is, and that she well disserves her praise. Perhaps if Kylsant hadn't run White Star into the ground, we'd have gotten Oceanic. Perhaps if Normandie hadn't have burnt, it'd be a different story. Perhaps if the Elizabeth had been able to escape her sister's shadow and wasn't cremated at Hong Kong, things would've been different again. Queen Mary is a survivor, and I've learnt to absolutely love her. Not gonna say I love the Normandie any less, I've just learnt to adore this grand old lady. Normandie was modern. Queen Mary was practical. Normandie was glamourous. Queen Mary was comfortable.
Exactly, that's been my goal these past few years was to get people to see that Queen Mary didn't have to be like Normandie or the others, she was unique in her own way and deserves to be recognized for her design and her contribution to the world.
Oh interesting, where did you hear information about her other houses in Atherton, or her house boat, or her plans for an estate in Berlingame where there would be neighborhoods surrounded by canals, or her philanthropy, or her activism for animal rights?
What a beautiful lady Sarah was. She suffered so much yet triumph over it all, what amazing strength. May Sarah be at peace with her loved ones in the afterlife.❤
I'll add an 11th: walk the promenade deck. Or the boat deck: that works too. Walking around up on deck is a classic and relaxing seagoing pasttime, as well as providing good exercise. As an athlete myself, I know I would love nothing more than to go thundering around the deck at full speed for as many laps as I can. :D
This is a wonderful video. I stay on her when I go on my cruises and learn a lot while staying on her. This video has given me so much more information. She is a beautiful ship and I am very proud to have been able to stay aboard her and look forward to many more stays. Thank you so much for this video.
@16:35 this wasn’t the first theme park in the world. Heck Knott’s Berry opened in 1920. But there were several other parks around the world that opened before Disneyland.
@@AlextheHistorianmost naval destroyers up until recently still used the steam turbine, and again, yes, all our nuke subs still do, due to their efficiency
I'm just not a fan of the space-age look. Most of the ships on my list are built prior to World War II with the exception of QE2 and QM2, but only because QM2 is designed with a modern Art Deco style. I really only like QE2 because of its work as a troopship.
From living in the Bay Area, and talking to a few people who actually knew her, and whose family members worked for her, she was a kind woman who had the money to employ many people, and paid well above the going rate.
Thank you for this side of her story. I toured the house as a young teen and there was a doorway that was Sarah's size. I could walk right through because I wasn't taller yet. The stairs were called Low Risers & the elevator, we were told was one of the first ever. It took almost 15-20 minutes to get to the 2nd floor. Also, there was no mention in your video of the repeated daisy & cobweb designs in the moldings.
Simply stay with us, forever young, Your Majesty. 'May shipwreck and collision, fog and fire, rock, shoal and other evils of the sea be kept from you!' Happy birthday - 1934 - Sep. 26th - 2024!! ♍🇵🇱🇬🇧🇺🇲❤️❤️
You can check my sources for this video, none of the sources mentioned Robert Moses or a freeway. I didn't know about it at the time of researching this video, I couldn't check for anything that wasn't mentioned in my sources.
In my honest opinion the ss United States should have been preserved along side the queen Mary, both beautiful ships and former blue ribbon holders i think 🤔 If I remember correctly the United States is still the current holder for the speed blue ribbon!
The Swiss Family Treehouse was such a special attraction , unlike any other in celebration of the original film! I believe it was a mistake to ever remove it in favor of a Tarzan treehouse? Disneyland thrives on a balance of classic & new attractions? Removing Splash Mountain has proven this point that eliminating classic attractions faces significant backlash & long term unhappiness among guests?
True, but if you never remove classic attractions, how can you build new ones to balance things out? Eventually each area of the park would run out of space. They have to take risks, and sometimes those risks don't pan out.
@@AlextheHistorian I still disagree to remove major classic attractions, especially because we no longer have the exceptional talents of Walt Disney to create something magical & unique that can replace extraordinary attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean? The current Disney company greatly lacks competent management & leadership or exceptional talent? The junk they decide to create from buying the rights of cartoon characters & old films such as Star Wars is hardly exceptional & certainly does not effectively replace classic attractions?
I'm just saying the concept of removing an attraction is not inherently bad. It's only bad when the thing they replace it with is worse than before. Splash Mountain was not an original Walt era attraction. It dates back to 1989.
The Issue Is That The Only Other Liner Most Titanic Fans Appreciate Is Her Sister The RMS Olympic Which Entered Service With The White Star Line 1 Year Earlier So Yeah I Agree Both Vessels Are Good But at The Same Time There's Other Liners Out There Too That You Can Appreciate Like What You Said In The Video
I grew up 15 minutes from the home. It has an energy that is frenetic. I dont feel that it is haunted, but her fearful energy is there. Sad to hear about all of her loses, especially wartching her own child starve to death....how unbearable!
I used to watch "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" every Sunday with my siblings and parents. It was always exciting to see what was happening in Disneyland, which was a key part of each show.
Seems like an era, where people were truly free to create and design with the upmost quality. An era, where everything had beauty in the detail from a fountain, to a bench to a mailbox. To draw people to gather socially, breathe fresh air, hear the birds, sit outside in sun, fresh air and observe beauty. Made people feel good. Today, too many regulations and red tape.
