Backyard Raised Bed Vegetable Gardener + Mom of 2 Toddlers

Like most, my journey and interests have been reflective of the path I've walked. This new project, the one of sharing my life and my passions with all of you, began in 2021. After having my second child, I knew I was ready to start a garden in my suburban backyard. With no gardening experience, and absolutely zero knowledge about growing plants, I dove head first into reading and watching and researching as much garden stuff as possible. In January of 2023, I started my first round of seeds in milk jug containers.

While my effort to document my life on RU-vid started in the kitchen and progressed into the garden- I hope it doesn't stop there. It is my sincere hope that in this project of sharing and learning, that I am able to inspire and give you that pinch of courage you may need to start your own journey.

im focusing on planting only long lived perennial flowers that live at least 4 years. feels like a waste of money planting ones that are just going to die in winter unless its from seed i collected for free from my old flowers.

"jacob cline" monarda didyma will have hummingbirds coming every day all summer long once they find a patch because it renews its nectar and it spreads by rhizomes so it basically has eternal life. i plant over 100 flower species and the hummingbirds ignore all others and go straight for the "jacob cline" monarda didyma every time

I started them in jugs! This year, I’m going to try to fall plant the seeds and let them overwinter in place, just to see how they do 🤞🏻.

I just planted some peas today and have cilantro that came back after letting it go to seed in the early summer. Also planted some spinach, beets, radishes and bunching onions along with some lettuce and carrots yesterday. Hoping for an abundant fall harvest for both of us! 😊

the hummingbirds dont seem to like the wild bergamot (monarda fistulosa) as much, they seem to prefer the red scarlet bee balm (monarda didyma)
@mike-o5g
@mike-o5g 8 дней назад
my all time favorite is the scarlet bee balm. ive never seen a flower that attracts hummingbirds as good as it and cardinal flower does, i think theyre drawn by instinct to any nectar rich tubular red flower like red bee balm or cardinal flower. apparently most bee species cant see the color red so those flowers evolved to be pollinated by hummingbirds

Biggest thing for winter sowing failure is to top water the containers right after seed sowing as this buries the seeds and compress the soil. The soil should be premoistened (before putting into the containers) so that no immediate additional watering should be necessary.

New subscriber here. Great job setting up your irrigation system. You reminded me of when I first set up my system about 5 years ago. I bet that you will make modifications every year to improve your system. A good thing about drip is that it is not necessary to have the emitters right next to the plant. The water will migrate throughout the soil and plant roots, and in some cases the soil on top will be mostly dry. Good luck. Looking forward to your journey.

I like winter sowing too… think I’m on my third year… but one thing I’ve learned is that like purple coneflower, lavender, and columbine they take longer because they need to have stratification… so you don’t need to be patient with them and they may sprout a little bit late. I also had good luck on the bunny tails, gomphrena, & monarda too… so give them a shot the next year… how do you agree on the water jugs is having the best luck. I also have good luck on pretzel containers that are circular with a clear top on them.

I think you’ll find that using all of Ina’s suggested ingredients will put you in the poor house fast. Every dish she makes seems to include saffron, sea scallops (at $30 a pound), and gold dust. “Jeffrey loves it when I sprinkle 24 karat gold on his roast chicken. Isn’t that easy?”
@joesantamaria5874

The original recipes for these dishes were designed around available ingredients, so of course you can and NEED to use what’s available to you. That’s what cooking is about! Of course, having the right tools for the job, knives, pans, etc, will make the job easier, but you’ll acquire them one at a time, be patient! 😀☮️

I see you’re in Z6b, OH. I’m 5a, WI and last year it was a very warm winter and rain in January. The WS did terrible. This year warmer yet and rain with 50s next week. I will try some on the east side of house and see if that helps. I believe what happens here is they are sprouting and freezing as we went back to snow after I noticed the seeds looked like they were getting ready to sprout last February. WS worked great in 2022, but this weather is too warm. The past week our lows at night were above freezing and now a bit colder, but days are increasing in temperature. So want to figure this out because I grow a lot and after last years gnat And aphid problems I would like to keep the mess outside. Yes, the materials to grow have zoomed in price since the pandemic. Many sources were unavailable. Many have noticed garbage in commercial soils, bagged and delivered. I think they are getting sloppy. Had No gnats this year until I started lettuce 🙄. I can’t go through that again. I’ve been growing for decades and never had to sterilize soil. They predict for our spring to be 3 degrees warmer and quite concerned because we lost a lot of plants from too advanced growth and late freeze. You wouldn’t think soil should be a problem as I’ve done conservation work and we just sowed seeds late fall on the open ground. Some throw seeds in the garden and cover with a clear tote with holes. Who knows?
