Hello sewing friends, My name is Deb from Perth, Western Australia. Sewing, knitting, op-shopping(thrifting) and upcycling with used garments are some of favourite things to do. I love seeing how the garment comes out at the end after I have been creative to get it done. I used to rush through the making process, to get to the end, but have slowly learnt to embrace and enjoy the full sewing process. I have a goal to ultimately have my whole wardrobe me made. Not there yet, but working on it!
My sewing space changes from being really organised to fully messed up! But that's sewing isnt it?
I am excited to share my fun experiences with you. I hope to connect with you soon. Happy Sewing! Deb
Ha ha I just commented on last week’s post saying Freya so it was good I didn’t have to wait for reveal. When I made it I also found sleeves short and length short even after adding length. Lettuce hem is still the name for that finish and great idea. Would you have had enough fabric for the fluted sleeves even if you had thought about it? Great poncho and love the outfit. Aw what a shame about the socks second sock drag will be even worse, but it will be worth it. Have a great productive crafting week 😊
Amazing job on the jumper, my thoughts are double brush poly is a warm fabric so I would think it would be a make for cold weather so long sleeves. The Freya would most likely fit fabric requirements not sure others would and it would also show the fabric pattern best. I did giggle when you said still cold at 18 degrees for jumpers. I live on an island on west coast of Scotland and we have had an even worse summer than most of the rest of the UK which have had a damp season. Today was the warmest days for 2 months at 18 degrees which felt less due to wind chill. Here peeps were out in T-shirts 😂. We have had average temps of 13 degrees in august with max of 15 & 105mm of rain so sounds like our summer is like your winter 😂 so I get what you experienced when you did your stall as I have seen many summer events where they are struggling and generally they have marquees and have limited door openings. I’m glad it didn’t dampen your spirits and wish you a very successful future events/ sales.😊
Love your dress and poncho Deb, I sewed top this year in viscose and my neckband stood out a bit like yours so rather than unpicking it and possibly stretching my garment I carefully folded the band in half to the inside of the garment, hand basted and then stitched it down. It worked perfectly and I actually preferred the look of a narrower neck band. It might be an alternative solution for you. The fabric is gorgeous by the way.❤
I’d say the Freya (t & b) since there are fewer seams to interrupt that lovely fabric. I’ve had that book a while but not made anything. However there are some great techniques in the book. I have really, really thick hair so I keep it short these days so that I can finger dry it and then put on some product to spike it 🤣🤣🤣 Love your enthusiasm Thanks Deb 🙋🏼🏴
Hi Deb 👋 when I am torn between a pattern I always think, which one would I regret most not making in the fabric, and go with that one. Given we’re going into the warmer months, and it’s a DBP the next question would be how long can I wait to wear it! Not long short sleeves, happy to wait then a longer sleeve 😁 This is literally how I have to choose things! And it’s always I want to wear it now. If I think I can wait it’ll be waiting and waiting! Loving the jumper so much! As for the rodeo, at least you’re still smiling, there’s always another event 😊 I absolutely feel the hair wars! I’ve noticed my hair seems to be changing after my hysto last year, the curls seem to be falling out! Some bits will be straight by the end of the work day! Oh well I’ll just go with it! I’m also not going down the HRT road and keeping as natural as possible. 🌻🌻
HI Hayley, lovely to hear from you and thank you for the comments. I agree if I make something now, I want to be able to wear it. I have decided to make the DBP dress in long sleeves which can be pretty handy in the trans seasons.. although not a long time in Perth, I need to be able to grab something easy and quick when needed. Up to about 20 degrees, long sleeves in DBP is fine. After that it gets too hot. Happy sewing!
Hi Deb, I like the idea of the Freya. I would imagine double brushed poly is warm and so a simple shift that you can wear with black boots in the winter would be a good option. I agree a simple design will show off the beautiful and fun fabric. Very 60's. Black clunky accessories would look cute.
Enjoyed going along with you. Have always enjoyed going through thrift stores. My mom was a big fan of shopping in 2nd hand stores and would often take us kids along. I have found some of my favorite pieces of clothing and things for the home there. The jean skirt looks like winner and the tweezers will definitely come in handy.
Thank you, the necklace is a wearable art piece that I bought at an Open Studio in Busselton a couple of years ago. I love it too and it is perfect with this jumper
Good morning. I would choose the Willow. I feel you would have done better at the rodeo had the weather been nice. We have lots of them here in the wild west during the summer. The weather is always a wild card. Yes, the hair is a thing. I loved my velcro rollers for years. I got fed up with all the hassle and cut it off into a short pixie. With a little bit of gel and a loose natural curl, it is sew easy to care for. Just wash and fluff. It looks great, too. You have been busy. Your sew jo will return. Happy sewing! ❤ Bernadette
I block the handknits by washing them, using the blocking process. I only discovered blocking about 5 years ago, it is when the garment is wet using a small amount of wool wash. Then squeezing the garment gently, let it sit in the water for about 10 minutes only (tepid water, not even very warm). Then squeezing water out, then wrap in a clean towel and wring out the excess water. When not too wet, lay flat and dry either inside or in the shade. Never in the sun. The original shape of the garment comes back.. it is so great! then it is ready to pack away for the summer
Hi Deb, I would make the dress from the Tilly and the Buttons book as it doesn’t have a waist seam so won’t be so broken up, looking forward to seeing your dress, Deb
Maybe your sewjoe has runoff with mine. Lol😂😂.. As we are or suppose to be going into warmer weather go for short sleeves. I like either of the Love notions. Loved the video. You may not have sold anything But, you have a story and some good laughs for the future. Stay safe. 😅❤
The hair... heredity alopecia robbed me pf ANY vanity related to my hair or lack thereof. Even breast cancer wasn't an issue. Never used rollers in my life and the only time my hair looked 'OK' in adulthood was when I was pregnant! Other aspects of ageing now there's a conversation waiting to happen! Your plan to regain your sewing mojo is a good one. Making something that you have done previously and love is a great way to ease back into things. The marker sound like an adventure! Off to checkout a certain shop on Etsy! See you next vlog!
It was so lovely to go shopping with you Deb. I honestly don't think I've ever op shopped with anyone except my kids. There was some great furniture there. Those white draws and the bed head, all better than our furniture 😊. I haven't seen a good second furniture store in years. Love this video.❤
there arent many op shops for furniture around anymore is there? This one is only the next suburb away and has some new and used stuff. The good stuff sells really quickly, especilly since they have a delivery service!
@@sewingseamswithdeb I don't think many places have furniture now. There's one near me that has a few pieces but the one you went too looks awesome. When I first moved from home there were heaps of places. Such a shame they are all gone.
Might work ok, stiffening the sleeve cap. When I checked the pattern I noticed on the photo that one is also doing the same thing as mine, so I guess it is meant to look like this!
Welcome to the channel. I hope you are enjoying the content. I try not to repeat stuff too much so that new comers can view old vlogs and still see new stuff, if that makes sense. Enjoy!
Have a great weekend Deb and lots of good vibes coming your way for a successful stall, experience. Will definitely being checking out your Etsy shop! Safe travels and see you soon!
Hi Deb,your cardigan looks wonderful and the colour is brilliant, I also love red. I have learnt how to crochet after many years of trying, thanks to the RU-vid channel Bella Coco. I have now crocheted about 25 coasters!! Great for presents. Have a great weekend 🥰
Hi Vicki, thanks for your comments. Good on your taking up a new skill in crocheting, isnt RU-vid great for learning new skills?? Happy crocheting! and sewing of course
Hi Deb. Loved watching a vlog dedicated entirely to knitting! Your cardigan is gorgeous and Bendigo Woollen Mills is a great place to go and revel in all things yarn 🧶🧶🧶 Haven't really been able to knit this year as the carpal tunnel got worse. But both hands are done now and when I'm feeling 'ready' I am going to slowly get back into things like knitting and sewing and cross stitch and petit point and.... mosaics (never done that before!). I think if you are going to invest the time, love, energy in developing the skill set to knit beautiful had knitted items then its worth spending what you can afford on good quality yard but also really importantly the right yarn type for the item. It's like fabric to me. I purchase what I can reasonably afford and what will give me the look, feel, drape and fit I want. Sorry you can't find the pattern for that awesome cap/beanie. When you said that I immediately thought of a number of patterns I have as I wear all sort of head gear. Because that cap gave me real retro vibes I immediately thought of some patterns by Susan Crawford. She's based in the UK and has published books of patterns (though I suspect you would know of her). Her website is susancrawfordvintage.com Have a great week, wish me luck getting back into things that make me happy. PS: apparently I'm in the roughly 20% of Australians who aren't int sport so I didn't watch the Olympics! But I still knew the broad outcomes as you can't escape it...
I’ve just finished the same top down sock pattern with blue Opal wool. They fit perfectly and are so warm. Now knitting with Bendigo’s new whisper yarn. I’m making the Bendigo diamond vest. It’s lovely to knit with and has a soft feel. I’m always loosing patterns in my sewing trash too.
