As an American who grew up in Germany, I'm devoting this channel to the great actors and personalities of two continents. Vivien Leigh is my main interest, followed by Lilian Harvey. These two British girls remain iconic film figures of two countries foreign to them.
Vivien Leigh will always be remembered for her powerful and mesmerizing American women in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Gone With the Wind."
Lilian Harvey was the embodiment of the Ufa film star of the Weimar period.
I have many favorites in addition to these two, and will post anything I think might be intriguing and interesting!
The New Yorker journalist is an example of typical boring politically correct old fart. Quite ahead of his times. Has he even read Streetcar? He doesn't have a clue.
I’m very very sorry Vivien w all of her intellect and beauty, never got help…for her mental disorder, bipolar.if she’d been alive today ,she’d definitely have been able to get the help she so desperately needed,…..other than the barbaric ECT treatments. The Hollywood star treatments as well, of uppers and downers I’m sure plus Ciggie smoking and drinking …I’m certain, played havoc as well, upon her bipolar TOO! Making her situation MUCH MUCH WORSE ! But that was part of being a star…⭐️⭐️⭐️🕊️🕊️🕊️
Seems to me you lost my comment so here goes. Vivienne was a treasure,I thought a magnificent actress that def held her own in spite of having physical and mental disorders as displayed painstaking real here in advancing stages. Her effervescent beauty and her ability to be a strong and capable LADY. In all situations, made me love her, for it was Scarlett O’Hara character I always held her closely to my heart. Vivien,I loved how you were a Saber tooth tigeress standing up for yourself when Dr Evil “ called you a Nan” That wit ! Little girlie giggle must have made him feel rightly Willy small! GOOD FOR YOU VIVIEN, YOU WERE MY FAVE ACTRESS AND YOU WERE AS I WAS SADLY DIAGNOSED LATER WE HAD THE SAME MENTAL ILLNESS FATE. Who knows? As well, I’ve British blood. Miss you….MISS VIVIEN OR MY LOVELY FLASHING EYED SCARLETT
While they're debating the "authenticity of the role", I have to throw in my 2 cents worth against the western movies in which they casted whites as native americans. That was never convincing. And the make up looked horrible. Vivien Leigh was convincing as a southern belle because all she had to change was her accent, not her skin color. Natalie Wood as an Indian or a Puerto Rican, not so much.
It seems like Kenan had a personale problem with Vivien. Before this he had also said some terrible things about her and writting terrible things about her in reviews.
Yes she had few mental breakdowns in which she was given several rounds of ECT as i who have the exact same BP disorder ,it’s still legal in Canada , I bad several rounds myself ….not pleasant made me WORSE BUT LIFE SAVING FOR OTHERS!
L O was overrated English stage actor. The publicity machine in Great Britain made him a screen legend in the US. because the US market is the key to any British-made film's success. L O really wasn't in THAT many movies. *Leslie Howard* was a far better actor and director of films.
What is sad is that she suffered so mentally and deteriorated as a result of it….she was beautiful brilliant and so successful…. To have to suffer mentally is sheer hell, i feel for anyone with such illnesses
Her face at just the 6 minute mark is awesome. I’ve seen and given that look when someone interrupts me or tries to put me down. A volcano is underneath that face.
Tynan was a leftist idiot, ppl like him laid the groundwork for later wokeness. To have taken to criticizing Vivien Leigh’s acting, of all people, makes clear the lack of judgement this little man had.
How was this interview done back in 1958? They didn't have satellites then to transmit TV signals over the ocean. My guess this was done over telephone (a long distance telephone conference call). Each location was filmed separately at the same time, and later on edited to sync with the telephone call.
One of my late friends met Vivien Leigh. I asked him what she was like. He replied - ENCHANTING. And that comes across so well in the interview. Mr Tynan, on the other hand........
Yes, INDEED we’re watching Cecil B. DeMille pictures 50 years later….they’re absolute masterpieces! And will be watched, praised, & treasured for many years to come.
