It’s true that Sam whistled at the end. Steve changed his story in an interview and said he whistled at the end of the song which proves he was lying. Sam was known for playing and being the guitarist and road manager for Otis Redding around that time not to mention the Isley brothers, Sam and Dave and Joe Tex. I was in a band up around West Point that Sam was hired as an artist development person. He was working for Jeff Lane who was the producer of brass construction, and also BT express. Sam played organ and guitar on do it till your satisfied by BT express. Sam was also a member of Joey D and the Starlighters and played guitar on the Peppermint Twist. There’s a well known video on RU-vid from back in the 50s with Sam and Joey D doing peppermint twist.

I met them both in 1976 in San Diego on the Fooled Around tour. They had an after concert party at a club called Spankys' at Rosecrans and Midway Dr. I tried to talk to Elvin ( I'd seen him in the film "The Last Days of the Fillmore" and liked it a lot), but he was mobbed and so I talked to the singer that was totally alone with no one approaching him. Yes, Mickey Thomas. When the club closed and everyone was leaving Bishop asked who would drive him to the hotel. We perked up and started offering a ride semi aggressivrly. Took a minute of back and forth but he went with us. My roommate and his date and me and my date in a Fiat 850. I sat in the back behind Elvin with his Gibson ES-345 between my legs (I had one of those!) and Elvin in the front passengers seat. It was a TINY car! My roommates date sat on the center console in the front...it was a stick shift on the floor..she was sitting next to the star of the concert we just saw...every time he shifted into 2nd and 4th gears...she got REAL self conscious. He was super cool. Took him to the Holiday in on the north side of downtown. Great memory.

definitely, a very nice song that was related also to that Japanese boy in Nagasaki who was carrying his dead brother. photographed by Joe O'donnell ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-exYv9Fth-2Q.html

In September 1995,I bought the outlaws live album "bring em back alive" used at a rasputins record store in Berkeley, California for just 20 cents..the best 20 cents I ever spent in my life! Stick around for rock n roll is a cool opening track, and green grass and high tides is a killer closing track off the 2 LP set!

The song is a classic, but this explanation of the lyrics is inaccurate. These are the words of a little Scottish girl who was carrying her rather large baby brother. When asked by a man who saw them if the little one was too heavy, she replied in her Scottish accent " Ee ain't 'eavy, Ee's me brither".

I heard the story differently. I've always heard the Father Flannigan of Boys Town version. Learned the story in Catholic school so there may have been some bias.

The quote was also in the film Boys Town 1938,, but was slightly altered. Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney): "He's not heavy, he's my brother." My Grandmother always donated to Boys Town every Christmas. Probably because my Dad got sent there as a kid.. lol
