I only Love the way The Hollies sing it . That song is wonderful by them . They really know how to sing it . When hearing it, you think it’s meanly means about the soldiers that are fighting for us (America) carry another soldier who was hurt to a med doctor. You set down and really listen to it you’ll hear it.

Yes, that may be the original meaning and many even most will agree. That was my first impression but the more I listened to it, I realized it could mean much more. How someone will sacrifice to help someone in need. Young or old, male or female.

I have never thought it was about soldiers. If we'd all live our lives according to the lyrics of the song, we wouldn't need soldiers anymore.

My brother recently died, he had a long ailment with nerve/immune issues (M.S) Also beat Cancer. He constantly feared being a burden to others even not calling a ambulance his last night when suffocating on mucus thinking he will deal with it & in the morning he will get looked at.

A couple of corrections here: I published the song in the UK. My office was in Baker Street, not Denmark Street. We had been given the song at 2am by the American publisher. The "slurring " version Tony mentions was, in fact, Kelly Gordon from his album "Defunked". I had the publishing company with my father who had previously had a hit with The Hollies called "I'm Alive". He was the one who tried to talk Tony out of recording the song, but on my insistence we played it to him. The rest, as they say, is history.

In our city Liverpool, the song has been passionately played during the sad times associated with tragedy and the recognition of a closeness. Everton FC & Liverpool FC have played this song in recent years following the Hillsborough tragedy and the death of our Everton Chairman Big Bill Kenwright as a recognition of closeness during attrociately sad times. Great song.

The quote was also in the film Boys Town 1938,, but was slightly altered. Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney): "He's not heavy, he's my brother." My Grandmother always donated to Boys Town every Christmas. Probably because my Dad got sent there as a kid.. lol

1:33 My understanding was that the song was based on Boys Town and Father Flanagan not knowing that it was from a much older story. Either way it makes me cry when listening to the song that I didn’t carry my younger brother.

Glad you reported on "He Aint Heavy". I put this song in my personal top 10 greatest of all time songs, in the R & R category, though it is not so much a rock song. "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" may edge it out if I had to pick between the two. I think Alan Clarke got shafted when he was sued by John Fogerty, and Clarke probably would have been better off to not have mentioned he got the idea for "Long Cool Woman" from "Green River". "Long Cool Woman" is the better song, and bears little if any resemblance to "Green River". I never knew until your video that Elton John played piano on this song. The piano really makes this song. I want to pass 3 songs on to you, that should have been charted nationally. These are on youtube. 1. Harlem Shuffle by The Fabulous Flippers (on Cameo records). The song got back to back air play in Lincoln NE. 2. Jezebel by The Rumbles 3. Save That Planet, Live at the Apollo Threater by Edgar Winter and the White Trash. The live version is the only good version, far better than several studio attempts. This is a long song, which may be why it got almost no air play, even on FM. The vocals at the end IMO are the greatest of R & R singing duo's of all time. Features Rick Derringer on guitar. The rest of the album is very good too.

If you think "Long cool woman" bears little resemblance to "Green River" you must be deaf. It's even in the same key of E!
@tompastian3447
@tompastian3447 6 месяцев назад
@@appledoreman thanks for the reply. The key is irrelevant. In my opinion, the two songs do not sound similar. I'd bet money that if Alan Clark had never mentioned he got the idea for Long Cool Woman from Green River, Fogerty would not have known. There have been some copyright cases I would have awarded differently than they turned out, and I can only speculate the the judges who hear these cases lack song writing expertise. The very word "copy" in "Copyright' should imply some distinct obvious similarity, which is not what I hear comparing these two songs. Led Zeplin was sued over the song "Stairway to Heaven", the plaintiff claimed Zeplin heard him playing this song in a recording studio he was in. When you hear the plaintiff's recording, it sounds very much like the introduction you hear in Stairway to Heaven. That in my opinion was a clear copyright infringement, due to sounding almost identical to Zeplin's recording. Zeplin may have prevailed due to their popularity with the Judge / Jury?
@appledoreman
@appledoreman 6 месяцев назад
Well, at least you have the decency to add "in my opinion." However, you can't be a musician, as, were you to write down the notes on paper, they would coincide exactly, the only thing differentiating the two songs being the lyrics, which are totally different. As for "Stairway to Heaven," Led Zeppelin didn't hear Spirit playing the song in the studio, they toured with the band & heard the song in question, "Taurus," each night for weeks, which obviously lodged itself in their sub-conscious. As for whether it's plagiarism, despite being a huge Spirit fan & not rating Led Zeppelin at all, I tend to agree with the judge. @@tompastian3447
@tompastian3447
@tompastian3447 6 месяцев назад
@@appledoreman Thanks again for the reply apple. As to "my opinion", I mention "in my opinion" because analyzing music (especially modern music) is so subjective, maybe because the bar is so low? If your claim was true, that the notes coincide exactly between Long Cool Woman and Green River, then I should be able to sing Long Cool Woman using the music only sound track from Green River. I don't see how that would work. Here's Green River... try to sing Long Cool Woman over this and the chord changes simply are not the same. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w0VI1zByJ3s.html If Taurus toured with Zeplin, that IMO is evidence that supports the plaintiff, so I totally disagree that the Judge made a fair decision. You may remember George Harrison being sued for "My Sweet Lord", the plaintiff claimed he copied "She's So Fine". IMO, this amounts to a similarity of only 3 notes being similar. I can only speculate as to how this case had an ounce of credibility. Wow, I just found after typing this paragraph, a video of Harrison claiming exactly what I just wrote, and that there are a good number of songs that use a 3 note similarity... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1klQUpgGP8o.html

The song is a classic, but this explanation of the lyrics is inaccurate. These are the words of a little Scottish girl who was carrying her rather large baby brother. When asked by a man who saw them if the little one was too heavy, she replied in her Scottish accent " Ee ain't 'eavy, Ee's me brither".

@@Olivianorwayyy the phrase was first printed in an 1884 book and became a motto for Boy's Town in 1938. Both of these facts can be confirmed. Your Vietnam fantasy, no. Although, to be generous, maybe a soldier in such a situation, having seen the movie "Boy's Town " might have remembered it and used it. But as for originating it, no way. Too much evidence to the contrary. And I suspect you know that, but think misinformation is fun.
