It was interesting how underwhelmed you were with the Canal. Of course you only saw one set of locks and that is like eating three bites of a new dish and not liking it. I highly recommend that anyone who will be visiting Panama to read the Path Between the Seas. It gives you a really appreciation for the undertaking the Canal really was. I also recommend visiting the Gaillard Cut, Gamboa, Gatun, Gatun Locks, Gatun Dam, etc. as well as riding the train across the isthmus. These sites will give you a different perspective as well.
I am in top physical condition. I train callistenics 3 times a week and I kayak slso 3 times a week. I did this hike with 12 kg equipment in 35 degrees celsius, blue skies. Going up I thought I was going to die. Absolute brutal hike with that temperature. With 20 degrees it would be no big deal

I personally had no problems. But people kept telling me it was unsafe. They even had a sign painted on the wall that said “caution tourists do not walk for this street is dangerous . Timestamp 3:20
Unfortunately it is definitely dangerous, the whole hillside apparently. I came across this video looking for other people who did the same thing as me. I walked up those same steps in June 2023, but then I cut to the street that runs parallel to them as I didn’t feel safe on the stairs. The street was just as unsafe as I was immediately greeted by two men on a motorcycle who hit me in the head with a gun, fired a blank shot alongside my neck, and then stole my camera and phone. Now that I understand where I was walking, I was being an idiot walking with my camera out there, but it was strange because it was so close to the touristy area of Quito, you wouldn’t have guessed that it is so dangerous.
When I was in India 25 years ago that room probably would have been about as nice as I ever got. The lock outside the door is normal, it's just so you can lock up your room when you step out. You had A/C and a sit down toilet, that's pretty fancy. I had rooms that didn't have a bed, I'd just make a bedroll on the floor. My favorite place had a rickety outhouse with a nest of giant hornets inside. Travel should be a learning experience.

You travelled all the way there and didn't swim? The waves were the same when I went there and as soon as I went in about 10 people came in too. The current doesn't suck you out to sea. You just go out a little and the force of the waves drags you back to the beach. Best thing is the water is quite cool there. So refreshing. I surf though so maybe have a little more ocean knowledge. That climb is madness though. I too thought I was gonna die haha. Nusa Penida is one of the hottest places I've ever been.
