I turn the trap around and use my foot or feet to hold down the bar and put the safety on, and then to set it. I use rubber bands to put bait on the tray, usually tomato slices for ground squirrels...because that is what they like around here. Yes, occasionally I put bait on the ceiling, but usually that is not called for here. I have caught many squirrels and rats who steal (or ruin) all of my tomatoes and peppers. We had serious property damage from squirrels and had to put in underground fences, and many other barriers and methods against all types of rodents and rabbits. Now we can rest pretty easy, just setting a few of these WCS traps when a new squirrel appears. fingers crossed! July and Aug are the worst for ground squirrels!
I use a Fern trap in a tunnel which is quite effective but not 100%. How does this trap compare to that ? How much pressure do you need to exert to set it? From the video setting it seems more difficult than the Fenn.

You failed to communicate. You want us to put the peanut butter on the _inside_ of the trap above the plate. You touched the exterior of the trap and said "roof."
I used to think squirrels were cute, but we’ve had one in our loft and after damage to a roof tile where they’ve been coming and going and horrendous noise at night, the problem has to be solved 🐿🤷🏼♂️
@@mkp3824 I’ve not removed any comments. It’s your comment that gone missing, the one where you offer insults for no good reason other than your own insecurities. Trolls like you no doubt need help. Also you’ve edited out calling me uneducated.
@AreaCode865 I saw it. Your comment has been hidden because it's offensive. Putting someone in their place over being cruel to animals and being misinformed, spreading misinformation, isn't trolling.
What happened is he got choked and tried to back out until he died... this trap is actual shit at a good clean kill. I own one of these, 3 squirrels dead, all 3 I had to kill because the trap just chokes or squeezes them. Absolutely inhumane! Like I said, i own this trap, and i dont use it now. It wont kill, it just pins them until they die! Sorry, if you are a supporter of them, but I had to personally kill the only 3 squirrels I captured. Just buy a .22 and practice. Far more effective!
@Jimi Barker I dont know!.. but I did use it again last week, got 3 more squirrels. The last one I watched, it took 5 minutes to kill the squirrel. It does work, just not clean kills.
I'm The Owner of R.C Best Traps which manufactures the Tube Trap for WCS. It's almost impossible to guarantee a 100% instant kill on any trap made. Squirrels do not always react in the same manor when they enter through the tube. Although humane would be nice, it is impossible to create something to kill an animal humanely 100% of the time. It's not logical no matter what trap you use.
Good stuff, but I think this box is over engineered. A simple tunnel, with access to the trap by a lid at the top is sufficient. The body grip traps are very effective, but I find the two are required to insure a fast kill every time.
The trigger is very fiddly - I have one and it works but it's an aggravation to set. Part of the time it goes off when you set it in place. I would look for a better type.
It's an invasive species, which is causing the native red squirrel to become less and less numerous. Greys also take over birds nests resulting in any eggs not hatching, they can and will eat young birds if food is scarce. It isn't nice when something is killed but they are classed as vermin and chances are if one was in your loft you'd want to get rid of it. Squirrels and rats chew through cables which can cause fires.
I agree with you about the bird's nests, the grey squirrels have devastated the population of small birds around where I live. They take the eggs, they take the chicks and kill them, and they tear the trees to pieces as well. They are classed as vermin and no better than rats, in fact, that's all they are is rats with big bushy tails.
Maybe bait it with a hamburger? I used mixed seed bird food in my WCS but all I got was a rat... So far. Today, I'll try peanut butter on a small piece of bread.
Good trap, but is anyone going to come up with a better alternative to the fenn trap that is just as versatile and doesnt cost 50 quid? Nothing ive seen comes close.
Hi, i take it you only use these box's in winter months . I'm just thinking of the birds i want to keep on my land, the squirrel's pulled every birds nest to pieces this year & i don't want to catch a bird by accident, how do i stop an unwanted bird catch. Cheers mate.
It depends upon your state in the US. In SC, without a permit, you are allowed to capture and destroy any furbearer or squirrel causing property damage within one-hundred yards of the property owner's home that is experiencing the damage.
