Hi, I’m Candice! I’m a self taught sewist and sewing pattern designer. I love sharing sewing tips, tricks and tutorials! I create beginner-friendly, modern, chic sewing patterns that will help you get started on sewing your dream wardrobe!
Thank you for this. These tutorials will be perfect for me. So glad i came to RU-vid, cuz all the people I asked about this were being extremely rude. Thank you for this
Great video. I recently upgraded my sewing machine as someone advised getting a machine for the sewist you want to be, not the one you are now. One feature I would absolutely recommend is a top loading bobbin with a see-through cover. Makes life 100% easier.
@@sewbakemake awwww, i didn't want to bother you as many RU-vidrs start for fun and Disappear, that is why i said that, i respect your responsibility more
I’d love to be able to upload weekly or even monthly but this stage of life is really busy and I’m just not able to do as much as I’d like! Hopefully I’ll have a bit more time this year to upload more consistently!
@@sewbakemake giving time to your family and toddlers is more important than random RU-vid follower and it should be as you will miss their childhood after they get older lots of love to you and you toddlers 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Really appreciated this video and all the links to patterns! I'm 5 months post partum and about to start sewing so this was so helpful and inspiring. So many cute flowy dresses which is what I want to wear! Thank you!
Thank-you, thank- you, thank-you!!!! You're the 1st person to do such an indepth step-by-step guide 🥹 I'm 45 years old and have been trying to learn how to see since I was a kid!!! My mom would go to show me, but within minutes would take over, others who i would ask would make fun of me....I've watched so many videos and always maessed up big time!! I've already seen 3 things that probably has had me goofed up, so im praying that tomorrow when i try i can have my 1st successful pass! Again THANK-YOU SO MUCH ❤💜
That’s how most digital patterns are- you print out the pages and then tile them together with tape or glue. I’m doing my next video on patterns and will cover this!
I bought a sewing machine because I want to learn to sew. However, threading the machine is really hard, and it's starting to defeat me. I would love it if you share more about your journey from a beginner to now. Is it really possible to reach your level of expertise on my own?
I have a long form video on my channel all about how to set up the machine and thread it! I am almost completely self taught. I took a pattern drafting class recently but up until then, I learned everything by watching RU-vid videos and reading blogs, and making patterns 😊
Shorter sleves and shortened to the length of the final dress would have made a cute dress for me too. But maybe that's too warm for a summer dress where you live.
I teach sewing and agree with almost everything in your video! Great information! My repair shop would tell beginners to spend at least $300 on their first new beginner machine as the cheaper ones often can't open to be serviced. You literally have to throw them away instead of getting them adjusted.😢😢 😢
Thank you!! I actually had a great experience with my $200 brother machine! I think it really depends on the brand and model, but definitely spending as much as your budget allows is the best bet!
I have never been to a sewing class but over the years I’ve gotten by. I prefer using a pattern which seems to be a thing of the past. Which site offers free patterns. Thank you
I have a video with my favourite free patterns up, or mood fabrics has a lot of free patterns. If you google it, you’ll find lots of blog posts with lists of where to find them!
Thank you so much! I have started the third episode, just haven’t been able to find enough time to finish it with two little ones at home, but it’s coming!!
Excellent video for beginners. I learned to hem stitch by hand at 13 because I am short, and I had to hem my pants and skirts/dressed by hand. I learned by watching my mom, but she didn't really teach me (long story). When I finally graduated from college at 41, I bought a machine, that looking back, was obviously defective and had been a return: empty box, no manual. I struggled with that thing for years, but I sewed flannel robes for my spouse, daughter and one son. The youngest son got a wizard robe with lined sleeves and hood. I finally turned that junker in for an Anna by Babylock. Loved it. Learned to make simple dresses for my first granddaughter. Got a serger; what a learning curve! When the pandemic started, and I was sewing masks for family and friends, Anna jammed. Got a Brother, and it's been a journey of exploration and improvement. But I am still a novice, looking for teachers. Thanks for doing this.
Sounds like you’ve learned a ton of your sewing journey! It’s definitely hard to learn on your own- thats amazing, and sounds like you’ve made so many awesome things!
@@sewbakemake thank you. Sewing for love is very motivating: dresses for distant granddaughters (as in, living a 4-hour plane flight away), and masks for family and friends to keep them safe and healthy--all motivated me to improve my skills so that I could give the best to my loved ones. But really, it's people like you, who post instructive videos, that make this journey of discovery possible for me. So I thank you, and all the other RU-vidrs that I watch, for that.
Super Cute & Great Job!! But next time, make a full muslin to test your pattern and fit so you make the adjustments before cutting and using your real fabric.
Thanks!! I definitely know I should make full muslins, but often just don’t have the time! I’ve got a toddler and a 5 yr old and just finding the time to sew anything is very hard these days, so I tend to just go for it more often than not!
I'm starting with a "clean girl" vintage vest pattern from McCalls, it's rated easy but it's not so easy 😅 learning a lot working it through and like you said the reward is unmatched! I've subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing!! Good luck with the vest! I find the big 5 patterns (McCalls, newlook, simplicity etc) have the worst instructions for beginners! Super vague and not easy to follow! But you’re right- you’ll learn a lot just by sewing it!! Indie sewing patterns are much more beginner friendly, so I definitely recommend using one of those for your next project!
@@sewbakemake yes, I printed two Chikafrik (I think that's Indie) patterns this week and cut them out, Lovelina top and Blair skirt. A lot simpler than the vest
I’ve only just found your videos, but I’m really enjoying your video style! I l. o. v. e. LOVE the pleats on the fronts of your pants… as to the darts on the back of the pants… I would maybe consider using two darts on each back piece (instead of one)… they would be about 3/4” to 1” (inch) apart and you could also have both of them the same length or the ones nearest your center back seam could be 3/8” to 1/2” longer than the ones closest to your side seam. I think this would be especially helpful if you have already finished the first darts and you discover that you still need more taken out of your waist.
