The most common question I get on social media is “How do I start sewing?”, so I decided it was time to make a video about it and share all of my tips and advice on how to start sewing your own clothes!
This will be the first video of a whole Learn to Sew Series, so if you like this video, make sure to subscribe to see the rest! One thing I forgot to mention, is that marketplace can be a great place to look for a machine! Just make sure to try it out with some scrap fabric and make an assessment on how it works before bringing it home!

When I had my first baby, I was in a very poor situation. I would buy pieces of fabric for $1 from a store called Zears. I would make my baby clothes without sewing machine. Then I got the idea of buying clothes from the secondhand store for a few cents. I made out of a grownups sweatshirt,with zipper and sweatpants, and made my baby sweatshirt and jacket with a hoodie. Without making a pattern. I just cut the shapes by sight. I wish we were into taking pictures back then like we are now. Because they were such nicely made pieces of clothing for babies, just by hand. And I never sewn before in my life. But I guess when you are in a very desperate need to do what you can.

I would love a breakdown of how to read a sewing pattern as well how to line a garment. I've made a small amount of clothes in the past, but never liked how they looked inside. It would be helpful to know how to clean that up (or keep it clean looking along the way) and make it not look so homemade.

My mom learned to sew in Germany, on a Pfaff, at the Pfaff Warehouse! Can you imagine?She made me sit and watch her but I wasn't allowed to sew. My parents would buy me a cheap machine many times for my birthday and they were awful. I've had a fake Janome, White, a couple from JOAnns,Goodwill etc. I got upset with my new one, seemed to be called House/home? and went to WalMart. I bought a Brother for 170.00. That thing is still running and has been a powerhouse!! I bought an expensive Janome with over 300 stitches. My Brother is set up to do overlock or blind hems. This was a wonderful video, thanks. I've had at least 5 Singers and had to throw them all away. Brother and Janome are MY brands!!

i just started sewing and tried to make a tube top out of old jeans. it was really fun and although i struggled, it turned out okay. i’m going to go thrifting, and buy some pins and clips. i’m so exited and this series is very helpful!

Just found your channel! You're a natural at teaching! I used to sew when I was younger and am trying to get back to it but it's a struggle. Excellent video for beginners. I learned to hem stitch by hand at 13 because I am short, and I had to hem my pants and skirts/dressed by hand. I learned by watching my mom, but she didn't really teach me (long story). When I finally graduated from college at 41, I bought a machine, that looking back, was obviously defective and had been a return: empty box, no manual. I struggled with that thing for years, but I sewed flannel robes for my spouse, daughter and one son. The youngest son got a wizard robe with lined sleeves and hood. I finally turned that junker in for an Anna by Babylock. Loved it. Learned to make simple dresses for my first granddaughter. Got a serger; what a learning curve! When the pandemic started, and I was sewing masks for family and friends, Anna jammed. Got a Brother, and it's been a journey of exploration and improvement. But I am still a novice, looking for teachers. Thanks for doing this.

I teach sewing and agree with almost everything in your video! Great information! My repair shop would tell beginners to spend at least $300 on their first new beginner machine as the cheaper ones often can't open to be serviced. You literally have to throw them away instead of getting them adjusted.😢😢 😢

Hello, I just bought my 3rd sewing machine but I really don't know how to sew clothes so thank you for your videos. I totally agree with you about the old bed sheets, just bleach them. My first sewing machine I made curtains, shower curtains, anything with a straight line. However my second one I made the totes, and zipper bags for everyone I knew 😂😂😂. Now I am ready to really learn how to sew and I WILL be starting on a SINGER HEAVY DUTY machine. I originally bought the Singer 3337 but after the reviews I decided to take it back and get the heavy duty one. Okay, thanks again for being my sewing BFF. I am so sick of asking everyone in Walmart if they sew, so I can ask them a question. 😂😂😂

I'm a crocheter and gifted myself a Heavy Duty 4411 for Christmas. It was my intention to make linings for my bags since overtime, yarn can stretch. Well, it took me 3 months, but I just used it for the 1st time today. I was literally shaking due to being so scared. I must say that I really enjoyed sewing on a practice piece of fabric. So much so, that I don't think I want to stop at making purse linings. IT HAS BEGUN...

Ooo I'd love to see more videos on your vintage sewing machine! Have 2 Singer 401A and 403 and there are not any videos out there of people using them to sew modern projects! Only how to fix them. I'd love to see more of that machine actually making things today. Thanks!

I use only vintage machines. Any machine can sew on woven fabrics, and any machine that has a zigzag or design cams (your Singer 400 series machines) can sew knits. I own a 401 and a 403 and they are really great for making clothes. @ShannonMakes (here on YT) uses only vintage machines, I think. (One of her favorites is a Singer 301 which is such a dandy machine. :-) She makes all kinds of stuff, but clothes are clothes, regardless of the era. Hope you've gotten a chance to use those awesome Singers!

I'm lucky enough to live near a craft supply thrift store (shout-out to Scraplanta Creative Reuse!) and they test any machines they get before putting them out for sale, so that's a decent source of something similar exists near you.

I'm starting with a "clean girl" vintage vest pattern from McCalls, it's rated easy but it's not so easy 😅 learning a lot working it through and like you said the reward is unmatched! I've subscribed!

Thanks for subscribing!! Good luck with the vest! I find the big 5 patterns (McCalls, newlook, simplicity etc) have the worst instructions for beginners! Super vague and not easy to follow! But you’re right- you’ll learn a lot just by sewing it!! Indie sewing patterns are much more beginner friendly, so I definitely recommend using one of those for your next project!

Aw so glad you’re here! If you sew quite a bit, I’d say an overlocker is a great investment. Theyre great for quickly finishing seams, and I love them for sewing knits!

I'm so terrified of doing it wrong. I have to get over this. My starting sewing goal may well be too ambitious but I really want to make a skirt, and then a pair of shorts. Wish me luck! Good luck! Thank you so much for following along 😊 You can do it! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes- it’s just fabric, and you’ll learn from every project. I would recommend getting a full sized sewing machine though, as those small ones can be really frustrating to work with and don’t work all that well in my experience!

When I started (still very much a beginner other than middle school home ec flashbacks), I just chopped up some old, worn-out clothes and sewed all over the scraps to get familiar with the machine. Because I hate throwing stuff away, I still use the scraps (like sticking them between nonstick pans in the cabinet), so it wasn't a wasteful exercise.

I’m just now thinking of getting into sewing because of some problems with clothes being expensive, bad quality, and hard to find the right style. As I am still growing I go through clothes quick and I was thinking of repairing old clothes, making clothes, and designing costumes! But it’s hard because I dress more grunge so those types of pants are hard to make and I guess the shirts wouldn’t be too much of a problem. Anyways, I started ranting. New sub so I can watch this series this weekend or the weekend after. (Depends on if my moms probably VERY old sewing machine needs to be fixed.)

Thanks! I didn’t mention that as a tool you need as I see those as part of the sewing machine itself, like presser feet. But yes, extra bobbins are useful!

@@sewbakemake I get you. Just in case someone gets a machine secondhand, it might not have any bobbins or not enough, and of course people need to know that they have to get the right kind for their machine. Too bad they are not universal!

If you sew a lot, a serger is really nice for finishing seams quickly and also for sewing knits! I had the Brother 1034D for a while and was quite happy with it!

I have a brand new machine I bought about 10 years ago, a Viking that cost me almost 500 dollars that is still in the box unopened. I want to start sewing because I hand sew alot. I have not used a sewing machine since I was in high school. Will I need to give it a tune up?

It really depends on the type of garment! You could likely use it for a top, but pants and bottoms require heavier weight fabric

I want to learn to sew, but I am concerned with taking on a hobby where I overconsume. If I begin to sew, I would like a limited number of patterns to create multiple capsule wardrobes. Keeping that in mind, If you had to limit the number of patterns, how many would you have, and what patterns would you choose?

I think that would really depend on your style and what type of clothing you wear! If you can learn to hack patterns, you can create multiple styles with just a handful of patterns. I’d choose some basic ones that have the basic shape that you like to start out with. For example, you could get a basic shift dress that could work as a dress, as a top, or be hacked to have tiers at the bottom etc. Once you learn how to make small changes like that, you can really use a small number of base patterns to create an entire wardrobe 😊

I was thinking of purchasing a basic shirt pattern and adding other patterns to change the arms, and other features the basic pattern wouldn't give me. Thanks so much for your Input.

I looked at the paradise patterns -- they send you the pattern as a PDF.... so how can I print out a whole dress pattern on my printer ???

That’s how most digital patterns are- you print out the pages and then tile them together with tape or glue. I’m doing my next video on patterns and will cover this!

If you’re just starting out, I’d suggest trying to find a pattern similar to what you want! Drafting patterns is and entirely separate thing from just sewing and is quite complicated!
