Those little viva GT’s never got the recognition they deserved not much could stay with an escort or Camaro for that matter that slant 4 had great torque and it wasn’t even the later 16v used in chevette later on 👍 I didn’t know viva was fuel injected !!
Obviously the Camaro's tyres went off and to add insult to injury Martin Thomas put the camaro into the tyre marbles to out accelerate Mike Crabtree's Escort, that's why he couldn't make the next right hand bend.
Well, that Camaro driver got his comeuppance. How many times did he chop the front of that Escort at the last corner? He almost caused him to spin twice by hitting that front left corner.
Crystal Palace is my local park. As much as I love it now, I would loved it even more back in the day when you could watch these cars thundering around it!
Car in first for most the race was more aerodynamic, low wind resistance and its wide so corners arent as dangerous, the other guys had a much harder challenge and were superior drivers in my opinion
Love the rawness of this type pioneering racing - before technology created more precise 'slot car' style handling and performance. How hard were those tyres were being punished?
These old races mostly spoiled by dinosaur American machines that are just road blocks with massive engines. Still, great to see the Vauxhall/Ford duel.
I wasn't old enough to remember this race but I remember watching it in the mid to late 70's on the old black and white. Real racing with so much variety and still all fairly competitive. This and rally cross back then have never been surpassed for sheer excitement and superb entertainment, it makes todays races look clinical and lifeless.
