I have hit Mizuno irons and some older Wilson Staff irons but none of the newer models and I absolutely loved the Mizuno’s . The grain flow forging process that Mizuno uses I believe to be the difference between their forged irons and other manufacturers. I’ve hit other forged irons from a variety of manufacturers and none of them matched up to the Mizuno’s for that buttery feel. I would love to hit some of the Wilson irons and the Dynapower Forged sound like they might just be the ticket from reviews that I’ve heard. Apparently the price point that Wilson has is well below most of the major brands so that is a very nice bonus when you are an old fart like me and watching your pennies closely. The next order of business when it comes to my golf would be to get tested for which ball would be most beneficial for me. I’m not as long in my advancing age as I used to be and have never had a problem with getting some height on my shots so I definitely don’t want a ball that has characteristics that make it fly higher than others so would like a ball that has a tendency to fly with a penetrating trajectory on well hit shots. The Titleist AVX is a ball interests me and they advertise that it has the characteristics I’m looking for but they are also expensive like the Pro V1’s so I’m hoping to find a ball that is s like the AVX but less expensive. Any suggestions are most welcomed.
Michael Moody states he bought a 9 degree driver, not altered an existing driver, you answered to altering 10.5 to 9 degrees (correctly). Should the question be 'I have altered my existing driver from 10.5 to 9 degree, will that close the face'
Great video. I have small hands with some arthritis and like the lighter, smaller tour 25 grips. I've heard some builders say they swingweight with a standard tour velvet, as this is what the SW scale is "calibrated" for. For them, grip weight plays little to no part in "actual" felt swingweight, being that I'm holding the grip in my hands. I'm confused by that statement....does that means that if my Miuras recommended SW is a D3 that I have them made D3 with the tour velvet and then ignore the 25 gr loss when replacing the grips with a Tour 25 grip....the scale would give me a SW 5 less at about a C10?
Would steelfiber shafts benefit from Pure-ing? I've been wanting to try heavier composite shafts for dampening and consistency now that we've moved into an era where they don't all weigh 60g and flex like a senior club
Jim, I bought a P790 UDI a few years ago and it came with a graphite hzrdus shaft that is .370 in size. A P790 UDI is a .355 hosel size from what I can tell, so the graphite shaft must of been sanded down at the tip, to fit in. In less than a year of playing with it I cracked two of the hzrdus shafts. I looked up the specs and saw the head hisel size is .355. I had a old steel shaft that was .355, it dry fit well so I ordered a Steelfiber 95 graphite shaft that was .355. When I got it, it was prepared like the shafts you show in your video. It was ground down so much that the shaft tilts back and forth when put into the hosel. Why do they grind off so much of the shaft that it no longer fits, or was this a fluke incident? Thanks, love learning how to build clubs from your videos.
Unfortunately the maker of the golf clubs take different approaches to the hosel. Where some will wiggle as you explained and require a centering ferrule and some will use a .370 but add a small tip addition to fit using a 355. Such a PXG.
great video. where did the ferrules come from? they look good on these clubs. its been years since i worked on callaway bore-thru's. what i observed is that callaway sorta cheated around the swingweight scale. the heads where lighter than most head and the grips where lighter as well. lightening the overall club, but maintaining the designed swingweight range.
Nice video Jim. I have a set of these irons, and whilst they are a little chunky on the eye, they certainly work. Would recommend them to anyone, and I am not a massive TM fan
Question, is there a significant difference in forgiveness between the Wilson Dynapower and the Dynapower Forged? Looking to upgrade from my old Cobra S3 max.
This was a great tutorial on the many aspects of swing weight and proper fitting. Thank you. I may have not have understood everything (guarantied) about shortening irons. I just had a set of irons (mint Mizuno mx-950's bought from a yard sale) shortened to my proper length - which equaled -1 inch off the butt. When I asked about swing weight adjustments, I was told they weren't necessary and didn't matter. Is that true? Factory graphite shafts if that matters.
I am grateful to be able to get fitted by Mr.Jim very knowledgeable and very friendly, Him and Mrs.Robin are wonderful couple makes my fitting session very fun.The putter that he fitted me is improving my game a lot , I can’t wait to get my irons and the driver so excited 😀 Thank you Mr.jim 👍👍👍
New to club repair, working with pga tour superstore in Irvine, ca., just wanted to let you know learning a lot from you… Golf knowledge, BBQ and booze?! Love this video!!
Hello, Don’t get much time to see these informative videos since work. I think the swing-weight along with total weight of clubs plays a big part in being consistent in golf.
Yeah Accra is the best out there baby. Until they get rid of taper bs Accra will remain king for me. Also need to learn how to ream my hosels… I’m done with taper I hate it. I hate having the 9 and pitching wedge be the same effing shaft and yeah graphite has some that have a specific “wedge” shaft but I’m not playing graphite yet I’m 30 so I won’t change that till they hit something insane or I’m 45
Mizuno looks twice as good feels better Wilson power holes or that Beautiful Mizuno 245 Hollow head…Go with The one that feels and looks the best…245 is the clear winner and you will not look back unlike if you chose Wilson you’ll be second guessing
what glue is used to stick the shaft in the club, im from ireland by the way. Like would epoxy glue that is used to glue shoes to a cows hooves would that kinda glue do or does it have to b a certain type, thanks.
Got fitted last Saturday for the Mizuno 923 pros and I’m so excited to get them in. Love watching the process and all the thought that goes into it all. Love the video!
Hi Jim - I always enjoy your detailed video’s about golf club building techniques. Have you given any thought to building and testing a set of one length, or a partial set (4-7 at one length) irons? I’m thinking that there would be a good amount of interest. Understanding that there would be swing weighting considerations and other building dynamics, as well as performance differences a lot of folks may want your overall thoughts and feedback.
Do you know of any company where you can buy a putter off the shelf with more loft so that you can forward press? I wouldn't even mind a website where you have to order a custom putter. I just can't find any way to get a putter with added loft from the manufacturer. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!
Good stuff. Demoed the standard ai smoke 4 hybrid. Amazing results. I currently have g710 irons. I am a sweeper with a moderate swing speed who plays courses with medium to firm turf. I do benefit from some offset and forgiveness but I think the wide sole of the g710 is too much at times. I hit lower bounce wedges better than wedges with high bounce. Thinking to try out the standard ai smoke iron. Can you suggest any other iron to try out? Is there such thing as a max forgiveness low bounce wedge or iron? I Already tried g430 and did not get along with them.
It would come down to feel with equal numbers. I’m not a fan of “clicky” but if it gave more feedback or noticeable more forgiveness then very tough call.
