Hello fellow retro and vintage technology enthusiasts! I'm an avid supporter of not letting old (or obsolete) technology die - I hate that we have an e-waste industry! In an ideal world, we would still be using mini-disc :-) I collect/hoard, but will try not to show too much of my hoarding!

But alas, times move on and (you?) and I probably both love keeping the old machinery running! I make videos about old tech, new tech that helps me repair old tech, and mixed in, just new tech!

One day when I have the space, my home will be open for people to come and see my collections, spreading awareness of old tech is also important - it could spark the interest in the hobby in somebody that was born way after the technology was used!

Lol. The Casio fx6300g is still worse. That thing is literally just one of their programmable scientific calculators with extra pixels grafted onto the screen. The graph area is like, ~30x30 _pixels._ Seriously one of Casio's worst products. I have one of the Chinese clones. While I absolutely LOVE my clone, it's still a bad calculator. Any student that had to use one of these would of hated it. My clone gets used as a "programmers challenge", with stuff like a CRC-8 checksum algorithm and mandelbrot set demo written for it. Really fun programming on it! But for any math? No thank you! The only thing the official calculator would have going for it is better build quality.

@@martinmeyer2008 Yeah it's... Pretty bad. I'm guessing the people at Casio must've been drunk when they came up with the idea. Maybe it was a cost thing, like the Commodore VIC 20.

The worst graphing calculator in the world is Casio FX 85 ex and reasons are here 1. Thing can't do graphs 2. can't go above 9.999999999999E99 3. It bugs sometimes 4. Most of the graphing functions on it are missing 5. Doesn't flow in the dark 6. Gives me wrong answers like Graphing calculators: 6.08979e102 Casio FX 85 ex: MATH ERROR 7. REALLY WEAK 8. Can't take notes 9. They advertised it as scientific calculator 10. Graphing is not there Hp prime: graph, sin(number) Graphing calculators: graph, sin(number) Casio FX 85 ex: sin(number)

Hi thanks for the video good info I'm looking at this soldering station. How good are the tweezerers ? Have u used the 10mm ? Have u been able to take larger ics considering its only 40w per side I'm just wondering that's not powerful enough to remove ics
@martinmeyer2008
@martinmeyer2008 Год назад
Hiya, I haven't gone up to 10mm, the largest tweezers I have now are 6mm. They take small IC's off with no problem. For me, anything bigger - I'd switch to my hot air station. I suspect you are correct and 10mm might be pushing it, though if they make them, they must have a use! :-)

I had the SHARP EL-9200 in the 90' and I used it during all my Economics University for Math, Statistics and Accounting exams. I am so grateful to this calculator! It has a lovely and simple programming basic where I could develop some advanced scripts. The SHARP EL-9200 and the Spectrum 48k are the best and more precious machines that I have ever had <3

@@martinmeyer2008 no worries, I totally agree with you, it was really slow :) and your tests and comparitions are brilliant. In my experience it has not so much memory too so every script program I was writing and saving, I was obliged to delete all the others to save memory. But anyway, if you have a bit of time, I advice you to check the programming basic of this calculator. Are many years I was looking for a video or even better an emulator (it doesn't exists :(((( ) of the Sharp EL-9200 and finally you reviewed it and I am happy. I have a big nostalgia and good remembering of it. Thanks!

I'm currently doing a calculator restricted ham radio course, so back to a standard Casio for me till the new year. I'm very envious when I see what US guys get at thrift stores and the likes, we don't get anything like that here in the UK....have to rely on ebayers being truthful about what they sell, which is a video in itself!

Does it also use 24V for the tips? also do you maybe know the pinout of the handle connector??
@martinmeyer2008
@martinmeyer2008 3 года назад
Sorry, nope, these are all 12V tips and the 24V tips are not backwards compatible. Nobody has the full pin-put, its now got a lot more complicated as the newest WX-series has an accelerometer in the handle instead of a reed switch, and there's an EPROM doing temp control etc, so the comms via the cable are probably digital now and not analogue....somebody would need to probe them and reverse engineer them to get the full picture.

Nice! What country? We were always limited by calculator rules, so I often had a "standard" one for school exams, or just slipped by better one by, and then had the fancier one for day-to-day school etc. But, like to so many things back then, South Africa had a very limited range....I don't think I even knew these existed back in the day!

what is the maker or type of firewire card you are using with ?
@martinmeyer2008
@martinmeyer2008 3 года назад
The tower that didn't work has an Asus P4P-800E mobo with onboard IEEE 1394 (Firewire 400) and the machine that did work has a no-name brand PCI fire-wire card with an Agere FW323 ver 1.0 chipset, which is IEEE 1394A, but still Firewire 400...so both should technically work. I think I probably need to find the Asus drivers for the P4P-800E Motherboard and not use windows drivers...that may fix the issue! Or if you have any advice, that would be most welcome :-)

Very nice calculators, both the 556G and the 5120. I purchased a new EL-506TS, two line display, a lot of functions, but the keys feel a little too soft and are at times hard to read (the function ones) - the contrast between the markings and the black front plate of the calculator is not that good. Overall, it feels rather cheep compared to the old ones. PS: I'd be very pleased to get your HP Prime, if the offer is still available.

On reviewing this, I see that the menu's take a short while (< 1 second) to clear, so the screen update is not super fast. I wonder if that is possibly the reason for the delay in calculation answers, it maybe is is doing them instantly, but the delay is getting them onto the screen? If anybody knows, please let me know :-)
