Back in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s at gun shows, (and this was when the Buck 110 and excellent $20 lifetime guarantee Schrade LB7 and Gerber folding sportsman and Kershaw 4” lockback folder were some of the most carried EDC blades, and flippers and liner locks and pocket clips for that matter didn’t even exist), there were a lot of guys making and selling leather loop sheaths carried scout fashion on your waist at appendix position that held knives this way. You inserted or “loaded” the barely open blade edge up with the spine of the knife at the top of the sheath. There was no way to cut yourself because the knife was almost all the way closed, and you’d grab the butt and pull out. The blade would slide along a hard nylon wedge type disk sandwiched in between the leather halves, and deploy open in your hand, very fast. No going to your belt for the vertical leather sheath those knives all were carried in. Nylon, because obviously you didn’t want your edge skating against metal. I saw a guy demonstrating one at a gun show and bought one on the spot, but what he did that no one picked up on, which in hindsight was obvious, was use an ancient junky POS folder that was so loose that any pressure at all against the blade edge would easily open the knife. When the junk knife “locked” open with the standard lockback there must have been a ton of blade play, but like any good magician he had us all focused on the sheath and not the cheap ass loosy goosy knife. So I get home and load up my razor sharp and tight hinge custom fileworked stag Uncle Henry LB7 and give it a smooth pull the first time, and MY blade cuts directly into the nylon disk, slides up and out of the wedge, and slices the entire sheath neatly in half! First time. $10 down the drain, LOL! Took me 3 months till I spotted the guy again, and in front of a bunch of guys listening to his pitch handed him my knife and told him to try it. He had no choice but to load mine up, which I’d sharpened up special for him, and proceeded to slice right thru his as well. I got my money back and he lost that group of potential sales anyway. Once thumb-studs became more common, along with the Emerson opening feature on their knives, followed by flippers and Spyderco’s / Spydie holes taking off, this whole good idea in concept, bad idea in practice disappeared.
Hey nice to see you guys still around talking knives! You guys are like the top gear for blades (Top Steel?) lol Brass Boker rocket pen is nice pen, has a nice heft the bolt action on it is super satisfying, the oval shape is very comfortable over time sitting flatter on your middle finger not digging in, its a smooth slim design that manages to fit nicely in stitched pen slots, gets a beautiful patina over time, and when you want to switch it up a quick shot with 00 steel wool and you have a new golden pen
I'm not sure if there is a better-looking knife than the WE Banter. The blue G10 especially, the Purple wharncliffe and other variants as well are literal chef kiss. The clip, however doesn't need the name on it. It's LITERALLY as bad as putting a bumper sticker on a beautiful car. There is no room for different opinions. It's wrong.
Duuude I missed you guys for so long holy moly this brought back memories ❤ glad to see both of you together again thanks for being the best knife boys
I love the baby Bantar. Wish the fixed blade version was identical in size. Also, do you have more info on the Zippo? Never seen one with a button to keep the flame lit.
I will stick to my Big I dual side click with a parker style refill. Specifically a uniball Jetstream refill. I wanted an ink that would write smoothly like a pilot G-2 but would dry faster and not be as smeary. The issue I've always had with Bic pens is that the ink gets kinda gummy in my experience. But I understand wanting something very specific that you found works best for you.
Everybody loves the Jungle, untill they're in it. The bugs only bite during daylight hours ( mostly dawn till dusk ), and at night (mostly dusk till dawn). I see he's been there for more than 5 minutes by his scratching. ☆
"walking around with an open blade might not be a good idea" just wait until they find out that some of us carry fixed blades. safely as well.... they'll think we're mad.
The last thing I was expecting to see at 2am was my name pop up on the TV, you bet I woke my deep sleeping wife up to watch lol! Thanks for the kind words and including it in Knafs @ Nite! (Washer guy) Jimping... I've got the tools to do it! I've also sat here pondering the idea as I too have a soft spot for jimping. Drawback - I don't have a second Lander in case things go south (always that chance with machining). I love mine too much to risk it not being in the pocket. Maybe I'll experiment on some older less cared about blades first... Also, WICKED pen, Ben! 🙌
