Thank you!! The way Matt described the setting for this scene was just too beautiful not to try and draw cause like GODDAMN! The visuals of the freed souls was so pretty
This is nuts I was LITERALLY on your channel a day ago going over all your old crib animatics- and suddenly BOOM, a brand new one! Gods you can capture such a Don Bluth energy in your work, just that well earned deep emotion, it's incredible
Don Bluth!!? Omg that’s such high praise thank you so much!! Also a weird coincidence I was literally just talking about his Thumbelina movie last night! Such an underrated movie lol. Thank you sm again, that is so nice ❤️😭
YESS! This is amazing- like I really felt the relief and comfort the Nein were probably feeling after the whole battle and finally getting Molly back! 👑 😭
These are good, but do explain something I’ve noticed with the Yasha animation. She doesn’t wield her blade with weight behind it, as if it were a lightsaber instead of a Greatsword. For an idea to help with this, do you have dumbbells? A book bag or backpack? Something heavy in your grip is what I’m going for. The point isn’t to slow down your action, since you aren’t being fluid in animation and can speed it up in post. The purpose is to feel how the object and wide swings adjust your stance as you counterbalance the weight.
Yeah I actually have an answer for this! So the video cropped the framing a lot, but the video you see reference of me for the sword-work is actually Molly’s reference not Yasha’s! For Yasha’s reference video I actually did two passes, one with a prop and one without (I’ll probably make a second video with some more of that footage cause it was really fun to do!). The prop I used was just a lightsaber I have laying around, but made sure to keep my movements heavy and grounded cause great-swords as you know, are fucking heavy! lol. Because Molly uses “glass” scimitars I did a couple passes with props but ultimately decided I could get the fluid, quick movements down way easier if I just worked without them. Yasha’s animation for that sequence is actually sped up to fit the beat of the music! Generally and realistically no one would be able to swing a sword that size that quickly, but for the sake of fluidity and keeping with the pace, I decided for that sequence that faster would be better but still tried to keep her form and movements in line with great-sword forms without sacrificing the animations’ pacing! I’m a trained saber fencer but I work with other sword fighting styles cause it’s fun, so I try to keep it accurate, but often the “rule of cool” wins when placing that knowledge into animation. Ultimately I think it came out alright!
oh man this is so good im actually weeping. its so evident how much thought and care went into this and the found family element is genuinely radiant. so so good wow
Thank you so much man 😭❤️ I had so much fun putting details into this that I hoped other Critters would recognize so it really means a lot that that aspect gets recognized. Thank you for the lovely comment <3
