My name is Marco, I'm a singer, songwriter, and voice teacher from Italy living in New York City. With this channel I want to create a conversation about different topics regarding the art of singing, and give effective advice for anyone who is interested in singing on every level. hope you enjoy it!
Céline inserts tiny pauses throughout her delivery of the lyrics, the better to subtly highlight the words’ meaning. Also, her diction is cunningly altered to sound like Piaf’s: the rolled ‘r’ was a standard feature of singing in the the 1930s to the mid sixties. It’s disappeared completely and nowadays nobody uses it. In doing that she achieves two things: transport us back to the 1950s style of singing (and Piaf) and give added resonance to her voice. The rolled r requires back of the throat projection of the voice, making it sound richer. In french opera the pronunciation of the r is what distinguishes native from foreign singers. Very hard to achieve. Callas was one of the tiny few to whom it came naturally.
Yes I think she is better in french also: In 1995, Celine Dion teamed up with singer-songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman to create one of the great masterpieces of francophone music: the album D’eux. It would go on to become the biggest-selling French album in history, selling 10 million copies around the world, with a series of classics forever etched in our memories: “Pour que tu m’aimes encore“, “Je sais pas“, “Les derniers seront les premiers“…
This was a triumph! I have now listened at least ten times and each time I want to stand on my feet with fist pumps! Truly, the best thing my ears have ever experienced!!
Amazing, isn't she? She is Céline. Being French, I was able to feel her intensity and the perfection of her. She is amazing. You have done an outstanding analysis of her great performance. Thank you.
Yes I had to find a video to show the keys for every note because she has so much power and RESONANCE that it typically seems the notes are higher key than they are! She is incredible! Her voice is so gorgeous and rich, her tone. ❤. Her technical ability and her gift to sing with or without vibrato and to change the measure of her vibrato!
Perfection, Celine! Mountains tears came from every continent all over the word as we watched you perform this magnificent song. Our tears were tears of sheer joy, admiration, and gratitude that you are getting better and stronger. You are so loved, Celine. We pray for you, and will hold you in or hearts forever ! Brava !
It's a pitch corrected prerecorded vocal. The too perfect fried electronic sound is so obvious. Her poor health, the heavy rain, health and safety concerns over electrocution and wet equipment failing and other technical obstacles all point to the fact it was a lip sync- an excellent lip sync. This takes nothing away from Celine's talent as a vocalist- she is one the best of all time. I've seen her live twice and she was awesome- back in the day. There is no doubt this was a powerful iconic performance for a world audience of billions- the producers couldn't take any chances of things going wrong!!!!! For many it will be a career defining hi-light like her Academy Award performance of My Heart Will Go On.
If you're a true Celine fan those he so called cracks or the more technically correct term is Vocal Dispersions were part of Celine's artistic preferencial vocal styles, see All By Myself and Think Twice for reference and self-culture purpose
I repeatedly say in the video that I love vocal cracks and that they’re not an issue for me. I think I’ve watched every 90’s Celine performance that exists and I know exactly what you’re talking about. There’s a difference between the distortion applied to some notes in those older performances (willingly, consciously and as a stylistic choice) and a small crack while attacking a specific note given by a little instability or tension or in her case an actual muscular problem. If you see her documentary, these type of cracks happen to her a lot while she’s trying to record, and she was not ashamed to show it, despite the da t that she was frustrated about them. Despite everything, they were barely noticeable and they contribute in making the performance more real. In no way I’m criticizing it, I’m just analyzing everything that’s going on vocally.
Almost all music experts, Fans and critics say that " Queen at Life Aid" is the best Performance of all time. I would say, you have to count this as well. Even IF she recorded the vocals the day before. She still had to sing this Song, in her condition. She had to perform and IF recorded sing along live on TV. But it looks live. In her condition, every Moment of exaustion could trigger a spasm.... to stand there, performing and not only sing, but owning that stage. The more Times i watch this, the more im impressed. After 5 years, the strengh to perform, the will and the mental comfort to perform like this, just wow. The four middle sentens😅es and the ending.....thats epic. She had to give it all and boy....she did.
I love Edith Piaf and her rendition. Celine did a wonderful version. I was not a big fan of hers because she always did too much yelling for my ears, which are very sensitive to sound. This song was good because no yelling, and I love songs in French, Spanish and Italian. I wish her all the best.❤
I am french canadian in Quebec and I am 20 minutes from celine home town.i did watch hundreds of videos on RU-vid about celine performance and I am very impressed all the videos from entire world and very proud of her.you did the best analysis of her.bonsoir du Quebec
This is more powerful and hearth warming than the best hymn of a nation, and shoul be the proud hymn to love among humanity. This song uplifts my spirits to the top and Celine's performance does it at the highest level. I hope many other people get these sensations and receive their healing effect.
Gobsmacked, blown away , in tears. Her preformance is/ was amazing. She is vocally powerful again! she is / was fighting to come back, And Boy Did she came back in Paris that night on the Effeil Tower! She nailed it , chrushed it and sung it sooooooooooo well! Edith Piaff would have been so proud to hear her song over Paris once more
I got so emotional, I was crying and smiling all at the same time. I was happy for her, proud to see her there, and in complete awe of her power. It was AMAZING.She is a true legend♥️
The deep meaning of the final line, "Dieu réunite ceux qui s'aiment" (God reunites those who love each other) while she looked at the camera, made my tears pour out. Finally, Céline and her public reunited forever in the definitive rendition of this beautiful song.
I love her ❤️ i always have, her incredible authentic self is all the more endearing considering she is the most incredible vocalist we have been blessed to have walked this earth with in this moment in time. God bless you Celine, your voice heals the world ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I enjoyed your comments and appreciation for Celine Dion. However, I was disappointed that you would even suggest that she might not be singing it live. This is the first time I've heard this idea. There is no way Celine would have faked this greatest performance of all-time.
Thank you! I think you’re looking at it from the wrong point of view. First of all, as a vocal coach analyzing a performance, I’m just making an assumption based on what I hear. If you listened to what I said, I explained why I think that even if the vocals were pre-recorded, I wouldn’t care. But most importantly, you need to change your idea about lip syncing. In many cases lip syncing is not “faking it”. What I mean is: I love Celine, I’ve been loving her since the 90’s, and there are no doubts that she is one of the greatest singer who ever lived. At the same time, there are several performances where she lip syncs, or partially lip syncs. Everyone does it, and that’s fine, it doesn’t take anything away from her talent. Artists lip sync for so many different reasons, not because they can’t do it. Sometimes it’s a technical necessity, sometimes to rest their voice, sometimes they don’t have a choice because the show forces them to. As many people pointed out, many sport events force the artists to lip sync to avoid technical problems, or for other technical reasons. In her case, given her condition and the fact that it’s a sport event, if she lip synced just to be sure, or because the show made her, it would be fine. Because considering what she’s going through, if she was able to even record this a few days ago, it will be enough to be marveled, and most of all, it still wouldn’t be faked. That was my point.
Why have all the videos of her performance been taken down? And yours is covered up by a still photo? Is that because it was lip-synced, and she or her management don't want people to start analysing that? Pre-recorded and lip sync would most definitely be the way to go for this anyway - nothing wrong with that at all. The logistical nightmares in trying to sync the vocal, the piano, and a hidden orchestra somewhere, would be insurmountable. The latency of the sound systems alone would be impossible to control, let alone her cue for re-entry points in the vocal. Is that why all the videos have gone, and yours is covered up?
I had to cover it up because of copyright, RU-vid wouldn’t allow me to show the video, no one can, if you look at all the other people reacting to it, they had to somehow blurry the image of or cover it up or modify it to avoid copyright restrictions . It happens for a lot of videos, unfortunately. It also looks that the Olympics took down every video of the ceremony not just hers. 🤷♂️
This is a wonderful Edith Piaf song, and a perfect choice for this event in France. Dion is using greater vibrato here which helps to project her voice to amazing heights. Newer generation artists should learn Celine's vocal techniques, and how to sing from their diaphragm. It really makes a difference, as Dion demonstrates here. The camera actually comes up very close to her as she sings some nuances, and would be very difficult for her synch perfectly. It certainly appears to me that she performed this live. An Amazing performance, and I am so happy that she has been able to overcome her horrendous debilitating illness to perform THIS song.
