Hi I'm Helen (also known as Rae). I am an RHS award-winning artist and the creator behind The Wonders of Watercolour.
This channel is all about boosting your confidence as a watercolour artist, even if you are new to painting. Every TUESDAY I will upload a brand new video tutorial so that you can learn to create paintings that you can be proud of.
I will show you how to paint vibrant watercolour paintings using my proven technique, with easy to follow tutorials every week - using my learn as you paint approach.
You will learn how to assess colour, application methods to avoid messy overlays and how to bring your paintings to life, how to gain confidence with your painting with fast results. I will share with you how to rescue mistakes - we all get the 'watercolour wobbles' and it is a common mistake to start again - but it really isn't necessary

I'm struggling. It's a complex piece but I need to know how to do it. Maybe I should try some simpler things and move back to this one later ❤ it's so delicate and beautiful ❤️ Thanks for your patience 😂 I'm off to bed in CA. 2am and I put my brush away.
A simple painting with gorgeous results! I love the pink color and the way that you layered it with a darker version on top. the results are especially wonderful. SARA
Thank you again! I’m still trying to figure out how to get past the ugly phase. Sometimes I put them away and sometimes I push through. My biggest obstacle is panicking in the ugly phase and trying to “fix” the painting while it’s still wet. 😖 Thank you again for the amazing content and help!❤
What a wonderful tutorial. Those melons looks so juicy. I’ll definitely be giving this one a try. I hadn’t realised that you’re doing a talk over. You did a great job of making it look like you were talking while painting. Thank you for another fab video. - Dawn 🌅🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Thank you, Dawn. I actually was talking as I was painting. These days I don’t do voice over work so much since I struggle with it but I am ‘mic’d up’ x
I'm going to try this one on a MM paper I forgot I have 😂 a Huge book of Grumbacher 🎉 it's better IMO than Canson XL . I've wet my toe navigating Patrion as well ❤ Tons to look at and do! I have my notebook for writing down all of the tutorials I want to do. Ok enough of my commenting. Juicy watermelon 🍉!
Beautiful 😍 I once had a lovely set of Sennelier. I have a triad of half pans now Lol. Oh goodness I have a tiny little tin 🎉 I'll put them in it tomorrow! They are a botanical favorite the world over! It's truly a great tutorial 🎉 thank you 💖
Etchr supplies are horrific expensive in the US. I have a stacked mixing dish set remarkably similar I think was a lucky find! I never would have guessed to approach the leaf as you did. Fantastic 😍 I am learning to persisist past the ugly stage, but how many layers are best? I think I once heard three, but who knows? I'm learning restraint. I always got too dark, too soon. Finding that balance is such a challenge and it maybe that it depends on many things I don't know about 😆. How many layers do you put down?
Is Bleedproof White a liquid acrylic product? I have a full Liquitex White acrylic ink that I have wondered if it is similar... haven't tried it yet but I hope it can be put to some use soon.
Awesome video! I pulled my water brushes yesterday and I am experimenting with them but I don't feel as confident as with a traditional one. I have Pentel and Tombow and they're nice to play with. I'll get myself used to them again. Tonight's work is starting the Apple Blossoms on a big piece of vintage Arches ☺️ I don't think I will experiment on it lol, but soon 💖 I am eyeballing those Derwent ones as they hold a lot more water than the other brands.Thank you for showing how to save a painting! Pro artists still have to try new things and we don't ever "arrive" anyway. As soon as I get somewhere, I raise the bar.
Beautiful 😍 I have ordered the Caran Dache scribble palette because I have had one and they are so awesome 🎉 I did try sand paper too. I'm so excited for my set! Everybody loves Shiraz! See you next video ❤
So excited 😊 I have worn myself out rearranging and swatching my palettes again today 😂 I love curating them. I'm actually sore from reaching for water and I am definitely going to get those waterbrushes 🎉🎉🎉 Painting can be less arduous... I have a few waterbrushes but haven't tried those. I'll look at some reviews ❤
Beautiful ❤️😍 I am so excited for my 72 set and I think I will try their waterbrushes. More Baohong Academy CP and I get my happy for the month! I'm off to the full video 🎉
I'm afraid I have been too rough with my sable spotters and the tiny ones have frayed at the point. I'll try the synthetic ones next order. My 5 is still well 😂
I'm considering this for Christmas. If anyone asks me what I want, I am asking to pass the hat, contribute to my purchase. I have absolutely the best watercolors made on the planet and all of the colors I want. I've been looking at A Gallo too, but I just might do well enough for both 🎉 I'm glad you are showing them and I know they are the ones that you use now. I broke up my mungyo 48 as you did as well ❤
@@helencampbell indeed it's all a matter of preference. I am really not enjoying granulations in my botanical pieces. I have a number of handmade watercolors and I love them for some things but they don't tend to be delicate. Texture in nature yes but I also love luminous transparency. Some people can't stand opacity in their paints...on and on... I'm going through my paints and I have a big box full of tubes, lol. Always thinking about colors. I collect Mashas Watercolors from Etsy. They are equally priced to Deep Deep Light, and a personal friend. Thank you so much for helping me decide. I can't have it all at once ❣️
I really enjoy your work you make a person feel like a pro the first time your work will keep me busy thank you so much for sharing your talent ,which is amazing 😊. I would like to see honeysucals painted, they look great with the bees😊
Oh my gosh, they're SOOO CUTE!!!!!! Here in Melbourne (Australia), we have different bees, but when I travelled to Tasmania (our most southern state), I managed to find some bumblebees there ❤❤❤❤ Yours turned out ADORABLE ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉✨️✨️✨️🫶🫶🫶🐝
You make it look so simple! My father was a watercolour artist but it's always something I've been afraid of. These are super cute though, I may just have to give it a go. Thank you for your time and generosity.
What wonderful bumblebees. They look great on their own or they would enhance any flower painting. Thank you for another great tutorial. I’m getting more comfortable with wet into wet, thanks to you. - Dawn 🌅🧡🧡🧡🧡
Hi, are all of your tutorials on a small scale?? I love your method and would love to know if you have a tutorial that is about A4 or bigger and how you would tackle it.. Thanks Loren
Hi Rae. Do you use the pencil itself to lay down colors? I'm getting a pan set and if you only scribble them out I really won't need them. If you do use them to color in subjects I will take the plunge. Thank you ❤
In this particular video, I just scribble them out and pick them up that way, but you can’t use them in other ways as I’ve shown in different Inktense tutorials, including this week’s launch
Hi Rae. I have the basic set of 12 Inktense pencils and really want to use them. I have started the tomatoes with them but my colours are so limited. Can I mix them with watercolour pencils or should I stick with the inktense only and blend with the layers? Love your tutorials. Thank you so much!
Hi. I wouldn’t recommend mixing them with other watercolour pencils because these are ink based. What I have found with different types of watercolour pencils as you don’t have that blend ability, but you could give it a try on a bit of scrap paper to see if that works if you can manage to get enough pigment off then by all means use them. Otherwise, maybe make some of it with watercolour or really push your boundaries and use the limited colours that you have. X
@@helencampbell thank you so much. I will keep to the limited colours as you suggest. It will be a good exercise for me. But I shall certainly experiment on some scrap paper as well.
I thoroughly searched this paper out and for us in the US it's much less expensive to use cotton watercolor paper. I buy precut 5x7 30 pks for 5.99 and I paint on both sides. Canson is just 95lb 120gsm which is a good indication for why I don't like it but it's awesome for drawing 🎉 Thank you Rae for everything! See you around ❤
It’s great paper, but remember that it won’t be as robust as watercolour paper because it will start to disintegrate if you add too much water. It is, though, as mentioned in the video, really good for blending but go easy with it.
@@helencampbell I simply can't add it. In the USA it's VERY expensive. Cotton watercolor paper is far less. Amazon has it for 31.00 and 24.00 shipping! Thanks for going shopping with me ☺️
