I collect and restore vintage mountain bikes. Sometimes I just build them to flip them. This is just documentation of my journey through the retrobike hobby. You con see more of my bikes on my Instagram page. instagram.com/lancer.hatch/
Im getting ready to buy a 26r specialized hard rock. It has the brake mounts on the frame already to convert to disc. My question is did you have any problems with clearance between tire and frame on the rear when you put on the 27.5? Im probably just gonna put on a 27.5 straight steerer fork on the front so shouldn't have any clearance issues there. Im just concerned about the rear clearance. Thanks
I have the same frame and I was wondering what are the choices for elastomers/coil springs? Some said the elastomers from the Canecreek Thudbuster seatpost will fit with no issue.
Watching this because i just done the wheel swap with not much clearance like you. Not much on it out there. Then looking at your frame real close. Light bulb went off. I had this bike late 90's in Australia. Powder coated it yellow in 2000. Had it 20 years. Best bike i ever had. Got stolen. Awesome. Thanks for the memories and clearance info
I have found using a Y wrench for your hex needs makes life easier, better grip and leverage when stripping a bike down and then on the reassembly. Nice score on the Stumpy, love the thumbie shifters!. I am looking for a Rock Hopper currently which aren't quite as pricey. Also I agree, clean it up take of rust and give it new lube but leave the patina, its earned it!
Hi i have one of these and im going to fit an electric motor to it in a couple of weeks. My fox rear shock is the other way around to yours and i think it would be better if it was the same as yours for the battery to sit inside the frame so is it Ok to run this way round?
I like what you've done... a lot. Is it worth it? Worth, value, and point of patience are all subjective. Each person's needs, expectations, and desired outcomes are all nuanced with human fickleness. I see nothing wrong with upgrading while still preserving the heart of the machine.
Nice bike, Lance👍👍; I see what looks like a 960 XTR rear derailer 👍👍. Other than an XTR 970 cassette with Hopefully the 4 L cogs being 6/4 Titanium, I'm an XT M770 and M772 fella😁. I've thought about making my 2006-07 Trek 4300 into a 27.5", but Trek d📨ed me back on Tw🐦tter saying it couldn't be done. I'd really like to go back to a set of Mavic's with their Mextal alloy🤘🤘 "YEAH❗️". And your Marin would look Great with a 7000 series aluminum Thomson Elite stem and post🤘🤘. Thomson also now does a coating more durable than powder coating. They put it on their 7000 series aluminum seatpost clamps, Masterpiece stems and post; and their 7050 aluminum riser bars. The Glac💧er ones looks really cool🤘🤘. And Titanium 🤘🤘
Just got the same bike all original besides the bar front wheel n both tires. It's got a brahma bar from a 92 diamondback axis xt with the og grips too!
Hi, do you know the bottom bracket spindle length for this? I was going to re-install the crankset. but after so many bike projects I don't recall which bottom bracket that was paired with the X-1 crankset.
And no mud clearance. Probably best to stay with 26 in wheels. I have a 2009 Kona Kula. Nice ride with 26 in wheels and 2.3 in wide tyres and can fit mudguards. Great as a trail bike.
Ηi i have a 1983 mt hood black with gold rims.Well lucky you cause of your location. Here in Greece i have to import everything so every bike costs over1000 bucks
Planning on doing this myself. I've got one of those oddball ti sample frames NOS that seem to have come out of the Raleigh Nottingham shop circa 1994. (actually I have 2 of them, I got them cheap. Word was, Raleigh was shopping them around to other companies, hoping to start making ti frames for several other brands) No chainstay bridge on the frame so tire clearance shouldn't be a problem. I was thinking of doing the conversion in order to make mine into a gravel bike. The last MTB races I did, I did with drop bars. (around 1999/2000) Of course now, the UCI has banned drop bars from MTB racing. What a bunch of martinets. Screw 'em. I've always preferred riding offroad with drop bars as I'm prone to carpal tunnel syndrome and the drops provide some relief from that. For me the 27.5/650b conversion seems to make sense, both for the gravel bike transformation and for the improvement in tire selection. I'm glad to see 27.5/650b wheel size catching on.
Was thinking of doing this to help a little with ground clearance on the trails. Also my wheels need replaced anyway. Don't think 29 will fit, but 27.5 / 2.4 should be fine.
I had those Onza pedals on my 1993 Zaskar LE bike. would love to own another GT Zaskar again! I currently own a 1999 GT Tequesta, which is nice too, but not as light as the Zaskar LE of course!
How is a 27.5 with smaller tires any different than a 26" with larger tires other than the side wall stiffness? Isn't the aspect ratio pretty much the same? Am I missing something?
I would say the 26 will be better at absorbing bumps but the 27.5 will be better at transferring power on smooth roads. Please take this with a grain of salt as I am just starting to learn about this stuff and I think the same way you do. When you compare 26 with wide profile, 27.5( also 650b) , 700c ( 28 something) and 29 er they can all do the same thing and overcome some deficiency by a tire choice
Gary Turner knew since way back in 91 shimano's XT or XTR rear v brakes would fit perfect the rear triple triangle.🎉 Gary Turner's 'All Terra' were the very own early original components (saddles, seat tubes, chromemoly4130 forks for stiffness(very rare), stems and handlebars. This is the XC ultimate frame of the 90's and beyond! Every Mountain biker wanted one! There is a Titanium version of the frame.🎉
@@lancehatch4475 i'm thinking to convert my road bike from 26 to 27.5 coz i can't find any good tyres anymore to fit 26 inch wheels i already fitted 28 inch wheels to the frame and they fit so 27.5 should be fine it's so annoying being forced to upgrade
