Three years ago I did a full detail on my folks 2002 Dodge Durango and when starting it up it did not sound right with ticking like sounds but drives without issues. Tomorrow (now Monday) I will become the new owner due to circumstances and I am pretty certain it's the 4.7 engine (with 125k miles). I would definitely love to get in contact with this group to get this Durango back into good running order with community insight!

My son has been my world since the moment we got the pregnancy test results, which is why that Durango became part of our life and the jeep went on the market. 16 years later and now he’s driving it. @@Cpennington57 Well from the little I know it seems like you're raising him right. I too had a father that taught me that there is a solution to everything for the most part. He taught me that you can learn a lot from taking things apart and putting them back together. Vietnam vet and a woodworker but also much more than that. Get it running good, then go for the raptor liner paint job if you’re due for a a paint job. It’s been 5 years and I have no regrets at all. The lighting upgrade, lift and tires were the icing on the cake. You can get a leveling kit pretty cheap.
Yeah I guess it is getting old! Everything is like the day I posted it, except the custom grille I made for it. Someone stole it while I was in a Home Depot. Couldn’t believe it, so low. Well I ordered a billet grille on eBay that fits both the Durango and Dakota. I then got some metal grate, or metal mesh, and drew out the shape, cut it, and put some door edge guard around to make it not sharp. I then designed the letters and had them printed in vinyl, and installed them. I believe I fastened the logo to the billet grille. As for the lights, I used a flexible LED strip I ordered on Amazon and wired it to a switch.
@Cpennington57 Wow, that's really fucked up to be honest with you. Sorry that happened. But good you got another better I would assume than the last. Cause I was thinking about the doing the same lettering with the font, size. But I was thinking instead of outside "C bar" leds. I want to actually make the logo light up.
Nice truck! I put the same spider headlights on my rango. They look great. The turn signal blinks fast tho. Do you have the same problem, or do anything about it?
I had to keep the original turn signals and just mounted them inside the engine bay with zip ties. Whenever I cut the wires during initial instal, mine was blinking too. So I reconnects the socket and bulb for each turn signal and it stopped. It’s kinda goofy having an exposed blinker bulb in the engine bay, but for me, it was the only way. I hope that helps!

Thanks for the negative comment bro! I actually do have a video under the hood. Mostly just diagnosing the ticks and hisses these old 4.7s develop. Not much you can do to a 4.7 besides swap it for a Hemi lol This is my son’s first truck. It is what it is.

Might figure out how to make some snap on fuel door covers! Someone liked the grill so much they freaking stole it while I was at Home Depot one day. Waiting for them to steal my light bar brackets and gas cap lol
I always laugh how people talk about them being junk. Dropped valve seats and cracked heads. I talked with an R&D specialist for Dodge, she was running the clinics during MoParty on the Holley Hemi swap program for the Dakotas... she said the Hemi had that problem too. Especially when the temps get north of 250F. Change the oil dont over heat it. Common knowledge of any interal combustion engine. My 2004 has only 125,xxx miles, but it has the heat cycles for 20 years worth now. Finally had to do a tune up last year. There's people with close to 300k on them with zero issues and never had to pop any of the seals on the engine. People who complain are just way to aggressive with it and dont service it.
I bought my son this truck for his 16th birthday with 130k miles. I got it back last summer and now have 170k. The more I drive it the more I think I don't want to get rid of it. I just did exhaust gaskets and will do timing chain soon. I also put a 3" lift and ordered 33s for it will be here in a few days. Before winter sets in I'm painting it the new dodge battleship gray. I love what you did to the interior and may do that too. Seems much more suitable for what I use it for. Good job man keep it up!

I drive it to work and tow my lawn trailer 3-4 days a week. My wife and I started boondock camping last year so I'm going to color match my 94 camper for a sweet looking rig. Got the new tires on Sunday. Hoping the GM layoff gets to me so I can get it done before fall camping sets in.
My son just got his permit and will be learning to drive it tomorrow. It’ll be his in a year. He’s waited his entire life for it, literally. I bought my ‘03 nine months before he was born and have been holding onto it for him. He has since helped replace the brakes, power steering pump, cooling system, and spark plugs. It’s a great truck to learn mechanics and auto body, and hopefully a great vehicle to learn how to drive.

Yes sir! So… I just sold this one to my wife as she wouldn’t let me trade it for a brand new f8 green R/T with Six speed, Shaker, and performance package. My old baby now has 33,000 miles on her and 4 years old. Still mint like the day I bought it. When we start our now matching Challengers in the carport, the sound rumbles off the garage door and you can feel it in the house. They sound awesome, especially side by side on a cold start.
No lift in this video, stock height. I have a second video that shows it with the lift installed. I believe it was 3” in the front torsion key lift, 2” shackle lift in the rear. The kit ranges from $75-150 on Amazon and eBay. If you haven’t done it before, get someone who has because it can be dangerous. It’s cheap and easy. The tires are 265/75R16 Falken Wildpeak A/T

Lookup Raptor Liner up on RU-vid. You can buy either tintable or black online at Amazon or through UPOL (the maker). The kit comes with the 1L bottles, reducer (or hardener), and spray gun. You’ll need a compressor. Grill, lights, bull bar, switches purchased on Amazon and RU-vid. You’ll find that 97-2004 Dakota parts are often compatible with 98-2003 Durango. Tires are 265/75/R16 Falken Wild Peak A/T

I've owned my 98 Durango 5.2L 4WD for about 6+ years now. After playing catch up on the neglected maintenance, I'm about ready to breathe new life back into my 25 year old truck. My path and vision is not far off from yours. Thanks for showing me what's possible.
That's an awesome video man! I have a very similar vision for my 2003 . Including the modified cargo space for my 3 dogs.I plan to lift the body 2.5 and the suspension 2.5 with some cartoon wheels/tires
I bought the billet grille on Ebay and painted it I black rustoleum bedliner, then made the Dodge lettering with vinyl and metal screen. Someone stole it :/ Can’t have nice, custom stuff these days.
That’s interesting… The are gapped properly, seated torqued properly, and boots all installed snugly? Man when I replaced mine after about 200k miles, the gap was nearly a 1/4”. Replaced them, amazing difference in engine response.
No plans as of now. I have so many other projects going on and this ride is just waiting on my son to get his permit later this year. I’ll probably do some videos with him conducting maintenance and any upgrades he wants to do, then turn it over to him when he gets his license next year so I can foresee some more videos in the future. Right now it’s a parked time capsule. I had one other video of the restoration/modification on my channel.

Raptor Liner by UPOL (tintable). They have black and tintable. You can make the tintable any color you’d like. For me, I used dodges Destroyer Gray paint code and it came out nice.
