The Reel is my VLOG series of my notable fishing trips, come along with me and my fly rod as I target Bass and Mullet on the UK South Coast and Pike from UK rivers, canals and still waters.
You tried the little surface poppers? Seen they work wonders for fish eating on the top and even making bigger fish angry to bite aswell with the water been so calm
@@Dynomique Hey, yeh I have moved on quite a bit since this video was posted, I’ve caught a fair few bass this year on surface flies and it is amazing fun, particularly when they really smash the surface!
@@thereel7071 it's my favorite type of fishing on the surface watching them take the poppers or dry flies, it's amazing fun. I'm currently beetle and realistic fly surface fishing at the moment and it's awesome, been on 4 fishing trips and caught fish on every trip, I normally lure fish but I don't know if I'll ever want to ever return to it as fly fishing is doing a better job of it ATM 🤣
@@UnderwaterFishFilms thanks mate 😁 I pretty much just fly fish these days, it’s a weird addiction 😄 I used to lure fish for pike and perch predominantly but now if I can use a fly I will, it’s kind of the end to end process of tying the fly and catching on it but also fighting fish on a fly rod is also a bit different, I love it 😄
@@thereel7071 yep i heard getting a fish on the flyrod is magical! i have to buy one and try it out myself, looknig forward to future vids from you mate, all the best
@@thereel7071 Thanks Lewis. I need to spend more time in those kind of harbour marks; they look perfect for the fly or light lure tactics. Have you tried Christchurch harbour at all? it's alive with mullet.
@@mathewvickery9925 I’ve not tried. Christchurch yet, I’ve heard the same though and it is on my list of areas to fish, the mullet there are supposed to be more obliging to take a fly as well 👍
@@thereel7071 Yes definitely worth a visit when I'm bass fishing I see loads of them. I'm sure if I tried fishing for them they would probably disappear instantly.
@@seanfitzpatrick3227 thanks mate 👍 Lewis’ fish, the 3 I lost and the bass all took a red flexi worm. There are a whole range of flies that will work though, most of them created by Colin Macleod. I’m in no way affiliated with them, but if you google Selectafly, their website sells a good range of mullet flies. The only thing I would say is that if you are confident tying your own it’s worth it as you can use stronger hooks. I was advised to use PTFE coated carp hooks as they stay sharper and resist saltwater corrosion thanks to the coating. Once I’ve had a bit more success with the mullet I’ll probably do a video on rods, leaders and flies etc. 👍
@@thereel7071 I tie a lot of my own flies for the trout here in Ireland the like the flexi worms.. thank you for the information there a big body of water that comes through my town over here and I’ve tried everything for them had some luck on a brown buzzer but sadly lost the fish hopefully now I can finally get one thank you
@@seanfitzpatrick3227 no worries, if you search ‘mullet on the fly’ on RU-vid, Fly Fishing Londoner has done a couple of good videos on the static method, one with a guy called Josh who came up with it, well worth a watch 👍
@@MrJoebailey the flies were fished static on the bottom, not in deep water at all. The mullet pick the flies up off the mud and then the indicator slides away, if there is some flow the flies should roll along the bottom but the fish seem more inclined to pick them up in very shallow water where there is little flow. Leader wise, I have a 12lb tapered leader cut down to an 8ft butt section. Then I attach about 6ft of 10lb fluoro and tie a dropper for a bung indicator where the butt section and tippet meet, then another dropper about 3ft from the point fly. So it should look like 8ft butt section/ indicator/ 3ft 10lb tippet/ dropper/ 3ft 10lb tippet/ point fly totalling around 14ft. I had the bass fishing the same method and set up 👍 tight lines!
Fantastic bass! Careful playing fish not 'on the reel', sometimes if a big fish turns and dives and you are applying drag to the fish using your fingers, the line can quickly dry because of the friction and 'jam' in your fingers and the fish might break the line. Talking from bitter experience.
@@justinphillips7392 must admit I avoid getting fish on the reel as I often lose fish while trying to reel in the line but appreciate what you’re saying, I often have too much line out for the distance I need to cast so winding that in once I’m casting to the ‘zone’ would probably help. Thanks for the tip 👍
@@thereel7071 yes you are right it's a faff, especially if the fish hits close in. I'm usually worrying about the spare line getting trapped around something if the fish takes line also. If a big bass hits your lure and takes line you have no choice but to use your fingers to control the run.... but if I think I'm going to be playing it for more than a couple of minutes, then I want it on the reel asap
we have mullets and they jump like crazy at time i think they are hard lip muttlets and only eat like grass weeds, they come in during high tide and back out when low tide... trying to see what fly style this picky mullets we have will bite .. some are big maybe up to 4 to 6 pounds they school in groups and some solo
@@thatonebeone worth trying a flexi worm, they might be eating small shrimps and things that live in the weeds, here they almost dig in muddy banks to eat small shrimps
@@thereel7071 please do man. I saw some awesome sounding chat the other day. But didn’t want to point it out and seem nosey 😂. But also mate keep these videos coming. They are spot on !! Just what I need.
Thanks a lot Dan. More videos of fly tying please!!
¡Hola amigo! ¡Esas son buenas noticias! Creo que aquí tenemos jurel, pero no en grandes cantidades. Haré más videos sobre atado de moscas y espero publicar otro la próxima semana. ¡Líneas apretadas!
Cracking video once again!! the beauty of fly fishing is the adventure, and even if the big fish didnt show up on this one. It looks like a very nice way to be enjoying the nicer weather before the busy day ahead 😍
@@MrHenry366 cheers Henry, yeh it’s definitely about more than catching the fish. The solitude, peace and surroundings make the 4am alarms worth it all on their own 🤙
@@W4Aw Hi mate, I have a video on flies which you can check out here Saltwater Fly Fishing UK | 3 Beginner Flies For Sea Bass | Fly Fishing For Sea Bass ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NCaj-mNzgWY.html For a fly line, at the moment I just use a regular trout line, it’s an Airflo Forge. Although if you want to spend a bit more money, an Airflo 40+ or similar will make casting the bigger flies a bit easier 👍
@@thereel7071 I fish a 120 year old dock with very limited places to fish.... but is home to bass and mullet well in to double figures. I don't want to say the place because it is already pretty busy! Question.... what retrieve speed do you find best? At my venue steady figure of eight seems most productive
@@justinphillips7392 it depends if I’m fishing in flow or more slack water but generally for bass a medium paced retrieve works most of the time. Last weekend I stopped my fly and watched a bass hit my fly twice on the pause but failed to hook it 🤦♂️ For mullet I’ve tried dead drifting flies in the flow, figure of 8 and short strips to emulate a fleeing shrimp but I’ve only ever caught one so can’t say anything works over another yet. We keep trying 😄
