In the latest episode of The Reel I continue my Saltwater Fly Fishing adventures. After catching my first bass I was keen to catch more but along the way I face the struggles that coastal fishing brings.
Catching a mullet on a fly has been a goal of mine as long as bass have been and I have put off targeting them due to the sheer difficulty involved in getting one to eat a fly. If you stick with the video there is an interesting twist at the end but the title of the video pretty much gives it away.
I've been fortunate enough to speak to a lot of experienced fly anglers on Social Media and want to make a point of thanking them for their advice and also just spurring me on with encouragement. It has now been a whole year since I started Saltwater Fly Fishing and while I haven't caught an awful lot I have learnt a lot and feel that my knowledge of the mark and tides when mullet are normally present meant I could achieve my goal, now I just need to make it happen again!
I am hoping to get out some more before the Summer is over and have the Orvis Saltwater Festival 2023 to look forward to. I am looking forward to meeting other SWFFers as much as anything else!
Anyway, tight lines! And I'll see you in the next one, whether it's a salty one or not we will have to see...

You can see why s-glass is recommended for mullet, the damping in that blank is superb and great to see

It’s a pleasure to fish with 👌 I’ve overloaded it with a 6wt line to do short distances with fewer false casts and it’s right on the money for going after the mullet 👍

The great thing with glass is they're happy to be over or underlined, there're so many variables in head length and weight as well as fishing distances it takes time to figure what works

Very inspiring video I’ve given up on fly fishing since moving to Cornwall even after receiving a after of help from a top salt water fly angler this year I’m putting my LRF fishing gear down for few months and trying for bass and mullet again both so frustrating my local estuary is absolutely full of thick lip but they are not interested in anything I put in front of them apart from bread but really want to get them on a fly

Thanks man, I must admit fly fishing for bass and mullet has been a pretty tough journey so far. My first year I debated switching to lures for bass but that wasn’t my dream and I stuck with the fly. Last year things clicked a bit and that mullet in the video has set a bit of a blueprint for me that I can hopefully recreate this year. Cornwall in theory should be a great place to fly fish and I know of a few guys that have a lot of success there. The best advice I can give is stick with it! My first year I didn’t catch a single fish over 12cm ish and the following year I had several decent bass and the mullet so it can happen, just got to take the good with the bad and learn from both. The thick lip in the video was caught on a bread fly, could be a good place to start 😉

I’m from north Cornwall and as a seasoned fly angler have also turned my attention to the sea and the one thing that’s changed my success for bass is fly size. I started using the larger clouser type but when I switched to small flies for mullet started to catch bass. I’ve now realised the importance of matching fly size to imitate what size they are eating 👍

@@paulsalmo7070 good shout, definitely lots of guys catching big bass on mullet tactics, makes total sense for a lot of places, small shrimps, crabs and rag worm likely make up an equal part of a bass’ diet as baitfish do 👍

Thanks for the vlog which I found to be both honest and encouraging. I don't have an S - Glass rod but I do have older carbon rods with softer progressive actions that cushion in the same way. I have fished places where the equivalent size of rainbow would be equally hard to manage on a similar weight set up. I have done a little salt water fly fishing and completely agree that some saltwater species have a different sort of power. I suppose this is because they exist in a harsher environment.
@thereel7071
@thereel7071 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment 😊 I know there are people out there catching mullet on modern, faster actioned rods, but whether it’s glass or slower actioned carbon, I think it’s definitely going to help soften any strong lunges from the fish where a faster rod may not be so cushioning. Where the action is faster, things can go wrong faster in the fight potentially 😄

Do I understand correctly that you hooked the mullet on your indicator? Did you have provided this with a hook? Oh Yes, I do also love glass rods
@thereel7071
@thereel7071 Месяц назад
Hi, yep my indicator was a piece of packing foam tied on a hook, the mullet probably mistook it for bread which was kind of my thinking when tying them. The indicator was actually sub surface when the mullet took it as well. Cheers, tight lines!

Really enjoying your videos! What rod/line/leader set up have you been using for mullet? I saw you mentioned using glass rod, but just curious the weight and type of line you use!
@thereel7071
@thereel7071 10 месяцев назад
Hey, thanks very much, glad you’re enjoying the videos! For the mullet any regular 5 or 6 weight trout rod will work perfectly fine. The reason I like the glass blank is that the softer action dampens lunges from the fish and protects your tippet but a medium action carbon rod would also be ideal. My glass rod is a 5wt but I overweight it with a 6 weight floating line to minimise false casts when casting short distances to the mullet. Then my leader is a 9ft 12lb fluorocarbon tapered leader with about 3-4ft of 10lb tippet and if I use a dropper or indicator I tie it about 3ft up from the point fly. Only caught 1 though so far 😄 but I know a lot of guys that have caught plenty of them on the fly use a similar setup 👍

Well in for that mullet, what length leader do you use for the bass?
@thereel7071
@thereel7071 10 месяцев назад
Thanks man 😊 for bass about 8 or 9 foot, on my intermediate line I have an Airflo polyleader thats 4ft and I add 3-4ft of 15lb fluorocarbon tippet. On my floating line I use 8-9ft of 15lb fluoro straight through but want to start using a better butt section for turnover, the Airflo polyleader would work but it’s an intermediate so might drag surface flies down after a while.

nice.. looking to get a mullet we have lots but tricky so im going to get a fly rod.. the mullets we have are from 1 to 3 pounds and maybe some close to 5+pound... we also have bone fish mostly 10 to 15 but i caught one 21 inch... also we have bonita up to 20 inch 2+ pounders and halibuts up to 15 pounder+ most all the fish are in 8 to 15 to 20 foot of waters is what i fish ..... will a 6wt be good or should i go 7wt ? looking for a light side fun action and trying not to go 8wt even tho that will be more ideal but im thinking a 6wt salt rod reel set up will be good enough and i just need to be carefull not to high stick and horse the bigger fish thats over 3+ pounds on a 6wt..
@thereel7071
@thereel7071 10 месяцев назад
Hey buddy, sounds like you’ve got some amazing fishing nearby! I am totally not qualified to advise but I’d say you’d be better off with the 7wt for mullet and bonefish, halibut on the other hand I really have no idea. Also interesting you are finding them in deeper water, for mullet over here in the UK we catch them in as little as 6 inches of water and I’ve only ever heard of people catching bonefish on shallow flats so fishing in 8ft plus of depth could be a challenge, especially on fly. Be good to hear how you get on! Bonefish are in my bucket list! Tight lines!

@@thereel7071 yeah are mullets here got use to boats and kayaks so they just swim under i see them on my fish finder, they do get spooked but not so easy ... yeah i think ill go with a7wt but a light weight set up rod and reel so it will feel like a 6wt.. most mid to high end rods and reels now a days are lightweight but you'll be paying a price for it lol i dont see anyone catching mullets here and i want a challenge to get them on the fly and learn what they like since they are tricky and picky, mostly the come in with the tide and then go back out once the tide goes out, they swim up a river stream like but its still saltwater always see them jumping and mocking me i will get a mullet, they fight hard i snag some before and they have power and speed like a bonefish .. when they mullets come in they feed on like green plants and little water bugs shrimps in like 1 to 4 foot of water up the river stream where salt and freshwater run off meet...

@@thereel7071 🤣 I feel ya! A few years back I was running some military ranges near Plywood- had about a kilometre of estuary with a small pier and an old wreck to boot- the mullet there were bloody MASSIVE! We tried absolutely everything and would watch as different baits would just slide over their faces 😩🤣 lure - nothing either, we caught good bass on traditional flattie rigs all the time but those mullet evaded us for so long it was ridiculous,, they would literally swim between our legs at times!
