Hi Dave. Thanks for all the interesting videos you have posted. I have a question. I read that steam and brass don’t play together well. Apparently the steam leaches out the zinc. And for that reason they use bronze for steam applications. Was the original part made from bronze? And is the part you are making made from brass? Is this cause for concern? Regards from South Africa. Vic.
Hi Vic: Apparently brass was OK for a packing gland. Every one I have seen is yellow brass and the only problem has been a worn ID. engine builders were cheap and brass was less expensive.
You have a great deal of beautiful pieces of machinery in your shop, but the jewel in the crown in my view is that drill press. It’s a symphony of orchestrated beauty in which, somehow, form follows function anyway.
I love history, I wish I looked at the hit n miss engines, and steam engines with my dad as a kid. If it wouldn't fit on a go-kart, motor cycle, or a car, I wasn't interested. Now I'm very into steam, alternative fuel engines. And would do anything to hang out w it the my dad again. I miss him greatly!
Nice, this one has been out for a minute, Nice work. We had a shop in town, if you took a B&W picture of it. You would swear it's the 40's or 50's the only thing newer was the welders and torches , everything else was old in the 60's seems my dad said something like it hasn't changed since he went there in the Early 60's
I think id get a old diesel engine to run things on hot days. Place it in a box /room with foam rubber walls to keep it quiet. Maybe hang old carpet on the walls . A 4-71 Detroit possibly to even a 6-71, it can possibly run at a fast idle with overdrive output to meet the power requirements .
My goodness what a find. (A comment from Keith Ruckers channel led me here 07/2024) He is working on a steam governor. Great shop David. Never did I know. I'll probably have a bunch of stupid questions as I binge watch your episodes.
Is there a way I can obtain copies of those Frick blueprints? I'm interested in doing a scale model traction engine from start to finish, casting patterns and everything.
Have you ever thought of using a knob, shaft, and bearing through the whole of a crescent wrench for keeping pressure on the wrench as goes round and round?
I wish I could spend some time picking your brain for all of the old school ways of doing things. More and more of it is lost to history every day. The knowledge that you have is priceless. Thank you for making these videos.
Is everything ok!!?? It’s been 3 months since last video. I made time to watch your videos they are very interesting and just so addicting. Just seeing what it might have been like back then is just mind boggling that they could do the things you show back in the late 1800’s early 1900. Well anyway hope you are ok and look forward to your next video.
Dear sir... I am a 36 year old, classically (manual) trained Tool and Die Maker from Virginia. I somehow stumbled upon your very first video and have now fallen into the rabbit hole that is RU-vid. Where is the D.R.O (Digital Read out) on your machines? Haha I'm kidding. What you have built for yourself is everything that I aspire to do for myself except I have to have dial indicators because I have OCD. I will watch every single one of your videos for sure. Thank you for taking the time to share your shop with us.
I send these processes and techniques to my Grand Son at Industrial Design School. At 75y and a practicing product producer this thinking in our times off cnc an ai is off great nessesity. Bit off a shock to see what came out off the box gosh…..
Apart from making something original machine on your dream setup with your brand name cast into it,next a major automatic CO2 fire 🔥 system that includes Foam.
Just got onto Ebay Audels volume 1to7. Good timing as about to draw up a 300mm dia reciprocating low temp inline air displacer, heat retrieval for a product that has a foot in the past and foot in the future. Had it running for fourty years 6 hours aday so time to put it’s offspring on the world market. Most Excellent Vid….
20240524y watched three sofar no way too stop.. Watching those tools breathing away together, a quite relaxing symphony in motion. Never would have imagined how sophisticated they were. The greengreyblue color perfect. You could do with an oil rag hanging out back pocket. An 8year old helper would take this setup into the future and beyond.
rreally interesting ..i am a steam nut myself . in my early days i was on the foot plate a fireman after two weeks my beer belly vanished we in england still have over 1.000 steam loco motives of all sorts what do you think of our burrell scenic showmans engines. a thing of beauty.. regards laurence
I worked at a shop that still had the shafting in the ceiling and had 2 Monarch lathes that were converted to electric and used Ford transmission gearboxes. They had been scraped and refurbished several years before I was there and still held .001 tolerance with ease. This is the first time that I've seen the steam powered machines operate, love how you do your work.
The sediment will concentrate in the boiler and lead to some serious safety problems, so you would need to Open the boiler's bottom drains and "blow down" a considerable amount of water out regularly while running. Also shut the boiler down, remove the inspection hole "hand holes" covers and spray wash it out regularly. If the water is really bad, you might need some kind of filter or use rain water. PH should be adjusted to about 9.0 with Potash or boiler treatment. .....Dave
