Steam Powered Machine Shop looking for steam power

Seeing how the New York shop is closed for the winter, I put together some clips of last summer that ended up on the cutting room floor. I spent several years as a "regular" volunteer with the great organization, Friends of East Broad Top Railroad jacking up buildings, digging out machinery and generally keeping it's great history from decay until its recent rebirth as the only all original narrow gauge steam powered railroad in the US. First is a trip on the #16 Baldwin, totally rebuilt after a 67 year slumber. Other clips are some shop jobs that I didn't have time to video completely and some front shop engine cylinder head work. Hope you like it, thanks for watching....Dave

I wish I could spend some time picking your brain for all of the old school ways of doing things. More and more of it is lost to history every day. The knowledge that you have is priceless. Thank you for making these videos.

My dad served his apprenticeship in the Juniata Shops of the PRR. He trained me as an apprentice die maker from 80-89. I owned our tool and die shop 37 years and now work for one of our old customers as a tool room engineer/builder. There’s a beginning a middle and an end to everything but God.. hope the sound of that beautiful steam engine never ends. Love that old Stiff Head Drill Press. Nice shop!!!! If I were to die tomorrow I hope Heaven looks just like this shop you have there…what a Blessing to work there… it’s never A Job if you love what you do.

You have been an inspiration. My background is chemical engineering but I think I picked the wrong career..lol I have been training with my grandfather who was a television re-pair man and who is now a locksmith. We have been putting together a machine shop so we can start a shop that specializes in pre war race cars. Everything has to be made custom for anything that goes wrong. I love your. channel and as I said it has been an inspiration. I love being able to take what others would call scrap and make a part that is beautiful and useful.. I am in Pa. Hopefully we can meet sometime.

G'day, Dave! Enjoy the videos! I agree, you are a great inspiration!! The sight and sounds of a hard-working steam locomotive. Steam is so elegant and classy, it's like music to the ears. (Friends of East Broad Top Railroad) It's nice knowing, they still revere their heritage, where one can still see, hear, smell and ride behind steam. Thank you! Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!! Cheers! 🙂

I can swear that was not the first time 😀.. Love your machine shop and would love to come by some day but it's a bit to much water between us..I got to take some pictures of our county's fantastic industrial museum the Pythagoras factory, it is a motor builder that started in 1926 and the factory is still intact since then. They build crude oil motors until the 50:s and then just made spare parts for the customer until early 70:s and now it is a museum and still have a working machine park from the 20:s with in shop built lathe's. Love from Sweden// Micke

Another treat from Dave! My wife's grandfather machine / blacksmith shop was all line shafts. Originally steam but converted to electric. I loved working in the shop that was built in 1918. Unfortunately, when he passed away in the 1970s the entire shop sold for almost scrap prices.

That's be great valve machine. It seems to be much easier and faster than the setup we used when I was working in an automotive machine shop back in the 70's. I can't recall the manufacturer of our equipment but it was a long and tedious processs. Most of the the equipment was pretty old back then. I'm thinking Atlas and Sioux, but I know they were buying new when I moved on. It was one job I really enjoyed because I learned something new every day.

Years ago as an engineering student at CU Boulder, I had to go to a book store off campus. In the vicinity of Pearl and Walnut. There was an older white washed building that been there for years. On the left side were seriously overgrown lilacs and bushes along the building. What caught my eye was the smoke box of a small locomotive. Sure enough there was a small narrow gage locomotive on a section of rail. So I went inside. It was a dirty dingy dark machine shop freezing cold. All the machines were black and had pulleys and belted motors. The gentleman’s name was Larson. He was about 90 years old and was struggling to make a living as a machinist. He showed me a brown and white photograph called a cibachrome. There was the building and about 15 young machinists. He proudly said that’s me pointing to a teenager in the photo. Years later I found out he had passed away and I could not find out what happened to his shop or the locomotive. The building was gone and replaced by a modern set of stores and outside coffee bars.

I am so where I can say a bit more. You see, my grandfather was taking me to where "Steam Fiends", passaged their huge steam equipment to where as to drive around the praede grounds with a steam train, in operation to the delight of all passangers...to the larger field of equipment, all with raised boilers and moving about the grounds. Some, very early models as Mogel. And, rather he also was a contract music to the gathered steam principals as liked to visit the bar and dance music. So, I was allowed to the bar save no booze to my young hand. But steam as principal to farm need saw remarkable boiler and movement. The music was as a western theme, where any banjo, harp joined drums. Well, there were several as Waltz of remarkable theme. Early western music compile as tribute, waltz, percossion. Western mix as early 1900. Very often, a good violin was shown to very component theme. Such as the kind gifts, early to violin waltz. You see. A particular reverence to good and decent life, as prioncipals to huge ranch area, so much as cattle and production to a general wealth, as a "good season" and so free to take along the steam larger size, and move about a field with very kind whistle to ahead or reverse. An astonishing view as a boy of my age. All, these constructs needed machine elements. As so I have my relic lathe to manage such work. A job list worksheet and natural to weldment and boring concern. It was Southbend 16543 or such 5 digit. I estimated late 1934-early 1935 delivery. And had a typical belt drive as served, also to line machine and steam. This time, these machines are remarkable and so amusing to see as real life job task or similar, movement. My personal regards to all channel viewers and author. M.

Hi Dave: I've watched your videos right from the start when you used the little steam engine near the doorway to run your shop, then you bought the big one so it wouldn't have to work so hard, they bring back a lot of memories of Navy days when all but the main machinery on board the last ship I served on was reciprocating machinery. And your workshop must make people appreciate the enginuity and workmanship of the people from the past, it's a pity machines made these days don't last as long as those you're using now, I appreciate all the time you put in to show people how it was done, enjoy your winter break down in the warmth and Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New Year....Regards Greg (Australia).....👍

@davidrichards5594 6 месяцев назад
Nice to hear from Germany. If the seats are driven in correctly with the .003" fit they will never move. If any type of oil is used on the pilot, it seems to pick up fine grinding dust and it makes things worse. They are very hard, the speed is slow and the force is straight down on the counterbore cutter. Good questions, thanks for the comment.....Dave

@davidrichards5594 *_ RU-vid sent me your way and I must say enjoyed your video! One thing I must say about American Railroads is I find it HORRIBLE.... Your trains seem to Bop Up & Down, Side to Side due to the rails. Here in South Africa, actually, throughout AFRICA our rails are near perfectly smooth, with no humps and swaying of our coaches or Locos. Check out any Vid of African (or seriously 3rd world countries) trains gliding smoothly on their way. Cheers, Robert, Cape Town South Africa. _*
