hi just found your movies love what you've done with the boat.i noticed you changed the mast position from the previous clips can you explain why please . how fast are you sailing whats your maximum speed so far
Mast position is roughly the same. Only slightly further away from the cabin because of the larger mast section. Max speed is around 11-12 knots so far. But struggling a bit with the balance upwind, so back in the shed for modification. Just need some more time to actually do it...
Lee helm, daggerboard is in the middle, where normally it is a bit foreword. So maybe change to 2 daggerboards. But there are a couple more things to try, like a bigger daggerboard, canting the mast and lowering the foreword rudder slightly.
@@LakemanF I happened to have the plans for the proa madness the rudders and skeg are 600mm x 600mm when lowered , that's the size exposed to the water below the hull , I noticed yours look much smaller .The daggerboard has a 400mm cord..I hope that helps with making some improvements with your Lee helm situation
Thanks. I just take it of completely, walk it to the other side and re hoist it. The plan is to use a furler in the future, so you only have to pull the tack to the other side.
Beautiful proa! The main hull looks like Madness, the 31 ft proa from Chesapeake Light Craft, but the float is definitely different... Is it inspired by it? I also like the tiller system, a simple line in a loop with a big tennis ball as the handle! But you have to slack it out when you want to raise the front rudder, right? Do you have a construction blog, or some more details??? Congratulations on a great looking unique boat!
Thanks! It is inspired by Russel Brown's boats, but fully designed and build by myself. The line for pulling the rudder down also tightens the steering line, and by releasing it to pull up it goes slack. proa-hydra.blogspot.com/?m=1 It is not extremely well documented ;) I will post more details as I go.
Winter kicked in, so not much happened after these few test sails. It is definitely inspired by Russel Brown's boats, but fully designed and build by myself. Performance is hard to say just yet. I have a second hand carbon mast that needs repairing, so that should be done this summer. For sure it is much quicker upwind than the mini 650 I had. Main reason to build is to try things out for cheap and use materials I already had. I do not have any prior experience with proa's, so it will take a bit to figure stuff out.
