Living full time in my self converted campervan with my spaniel ‘Ellie’ whilst working near Gairloch in the Scottish highlands as a falconer, I make these videos of the areas close to where I work or places I visit on my time off.
Hi can you please just confirm that it was the 3030 section you used, I have a L2H2 and am pretty much copying you. Thanks for all your hardwork and sharing it with us.
Nice approach. I was torn between 4040, and 3030, profile, though after seeing this I'll be going for 3030. Question, is your van an L3H2? And can you remember the dimensions used for both the length and width of your rack? I've worked out that my max width of solar panel will be 1500mm, though I'm unsure whether that will sit on top, or preferably, sit down in between the lengths so it's flush. Cheers, J.
Hi Jim, Yes my van is L3H2 but I can’t remember what the dimensions were to be honest as I just cut it to suit at the time. My solar panel was 1260mm in length so yours will be another 240mm longer so doing it how I’ve done it then yours is not going to fit in between the bars unless you can build it in a way that the bars are further apart, ie developing a different bracket. Hope that helps Jim, cheers
Hi. Great build. I’d very much like to see the iCloud layout you originally shared - but it seems the link on the description is now dead. Could you share a new link please?
Yesterday I got some brackets and set up a 50cm by 120cm table attached to the cage between the front and back of the van. I was using an old keyboard stand with the wood but had no leg room, now tons of leg room and folds up nice and tidy! Got the brackets from eBay, they're a bit of a finger trap, so will need to be careful!
I’ve not heard that one before 😳 this video was made a couple of years ago and I’ve not had to do anything with my controller since, so I honestly don’t know, a quick google search should give you the answer. Cheers.
4:14 Superb van Ian, The high standard of finish makes the van look so homely. 🎉 Really enjoyed the video. If you don't mind me asking, what was your total spend?
Hi and thank you for your comment, yes I must admit that being in the van is a nice place to be 😊 the total fit out cost in 2020 was around the 13K mark, but quite a bit more has been added since which is detailed in other videos.
WHAT an amazing job! It wouldn't even cross my mind to attempt that myself. What is the replacement toilet? Is it composting? I'd get one of those incinerators, but I think they're about £4K+ lol.
Thank you David 😊 I’m going to do a review of the toilet in a video shortly so I’m just going to keep it a secret for a little longer 🤣 sorry, but it didn’t cost 4k 😳I can tell you that much. Thanks for watching.
Hi mate, I bought the exact brackets but would like to know which timber you used for that as it looks perfect. My countertop is also 40mm so I need something a bit thinner like you have done. Many thanks in advance.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 ahh yes I see, after I watched the video twice lol.. I don’t have all the tools but I’ll work it out.. thanks for the reply buddy 👍🏻
With the van being l3h2 is that a legal hight for a proper van conversion am thinking about buying one but would like to make it a legal change over on log book thanks any one that can help
Hi, as far as I am aware, you have to be able to stand up in the van which I can do as I have about 6 foot from floor to ceiling, I have not tried to have log book changed and so have no experience in these things but there are guidelines somewhere on a dvla website that lists all the criteria. Sorry I can’t help any further. Thanks for watching and all the best. Ian.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 thanks for your help its just some places I hear are funny about vans going on sites that are not registered don't no if that's true or not but thanks for your time.
What great video with excellent detail. I am in the process of planning build albeit with a dinette instead of a fixed bed. Could you give me an idea of your total conversion cost, not including the van cost. Cheers
Hi Leon, thank you for your kind words, I’m guessing that to date I’ve spent about 16K but that includes all the upgrades I’ve made, when this video was filmed I’d spent about 13K. All the best. Ian.
Hi Stu, the windows were fitted by Joe at kestrel conversions in Barnsley, the cost of the windows and fitting in 2020 was about £700, the total cost for the van build was around £15K, 👍
Hi Andrew, I’m beginning to wonder why I fitted this plastic tray when many others seem to have had better ideas. Thanks for letting me know about the epoxy resin as I am now wondering if I could apply this to the existing tray and then make a slathered board to distribute the weight? Thanks again and all the best. Ian.
Our yacht shower has Shower Floor Wood Slats made of marine-grade teak that does not rot. They sit on top of the floor and can be put out in the sun to dry. If you have a jigsaw and a place to work, you could measure the gaps between those cracking circles and create a set for your shower. Even if, after many years, the teak looks a little worse for wear, you could sand it back and refinish it with a waterproof coating. That would be much less work than pulling up the shower floor. All the best - you have a nice-looking van! We also have the same setup on a larger scale in our cockpit, and being outside, the timber slats are constantly wet due to rain. Every couple of years, we sand them and coat them with a waterproof coating, and they look good and stand up to a lot of foot traffic as we often have four people in the cockpit sailing our yacht. Plus, the amount of dirt that builds up under them means we lift them up once a week and rinse the cockpit with a bucket of salt water. The teak looks excellent and has not caused a problem so far, and the conditions on a yacht at sea are much harsher than those on a shower cubicle in a van. Good luck!
Hello Ken, many thanks for your lengthy and informative input to my shower tray problem. After reading your message regarding the slats, I think that this is going to be the way forward. Someone has said they used epoxy resin on ply to make their shower tray so I’m wondering if I could coat the existing tray in a resin and then make a slathered board to distribute the weight more evenly. I am in Spain at the moment so will be getting on with this job on my return to uk. Thanks again and all the best. Ian.
When I was doing my van last year, I took a lot of advice from yourself and my van is a great job as well. When I was doing my shower tray, i got a guy to make me a bespoke stainless steel shower tray 1100mm x 600mm.
Wow, that sounds like the bees knees, what a great idea and no doubt that is going to last a long long time, it’s really interesting to hear how other people have gone about creating their shower trays. Well done and all the best.
my shower tray looks like yours , my van converter did a cnc copy of the tray in mdf and got a tray vacuum moulded around it. had it 3 years now and its solid. couldnt tell you the price though
Hi Michael, that sounds like the way to do it if you’ve got the equipment. This tray is so thin, probably about 2mm in thickness, do you have the details of your van converter that you would be able to pass on to me? I’d be very interested in talking to him. Even if he could make a thicker one it would be a hell of a job to change this one out but would be worth it in the long run. Thank you.
Chuck my pennies worth in while I'm here.. once you've found a way of sealing it, make a board of wooden or plastic slats that sits in the tray and spreads ya weight evenly across the tray.. bit like a stand on draining board.
I love regret videos, I learn so much from it. You could drill a hole, and fill those empty spaces with something, maybe expanding stuff, just to avoid further cracking, and then see if you can get some clear epoxy to sit on top of this, to seal it up. 🤔
Yes all the regret videos should be watched before starting a van build 🤣 Not a bad idea that, would be worried about to much expansion blowing the whole thing to bits but maybe some kind of silicone instead? Thanks for your input 👍
@@onevanandhisdog3641 I did actually watch plenty regret videos, before starting. It prepared me for several things that those Instagram picture perfect moments doesn't seem to catch. 😜 I am redoing my van again (it's a basic transit connect) because I don't have much space, I need to figure out the best way to get the most out what I have. I went the traditional couch to bed style, but that felt very cramped, and didn't work for my use. Then I built a fold up bed, which gave me plenty of floorspace, but then had to go up and down, and blocked some drawers. My next setup, will be half and half, so a chair that folds the back down to a bed, then a skinny kitchen, all along the side behind the driver seat, with sliding doors, so everything is tucked away. I think this will be the best option, based on how I used it on my 2 month trip. It will give me both a raised seat, a longer bed (since it goes over the foldable passenger seat) and storage for duvet and blankets. I will still have space in the middle, access to all doors, a functional kitchen space, which won't be blocked when I am in bedmode.. At least, the "drawings" in my head says so.. 😉
That sounds like just the job and as you have already spent a fair bit of time travelling in your van then you will know exactly what your needs are. I wish you all the best with your new design and if you make a video of it then please let me know. Cheers.
Hi, my 2 cents if you want to repair : 1. unmount the shower tray 2. put something around your evacuation tube part (to separate it from the rest of the "under the tray" volume) 3. remount the shower tray 4. drill small holes on the side, and fill under the tray with EPS foam (take the version that doesn't mold in contact of water, I think it's the blue one) - this is why step 2 is important, if the foam goes to contact with your evacuation you won't be able to fix this any more 5. to finish, repaint your tray to cover the cracks and apply some epoxy with a pencil to make it harder/stronger
Hi Greg, Thank you for that, it’s very much appreciated. I don’t know about EPS foam so I’ll check it out, I put a piece of ply in the central part of the shower that is raised so it’s just those other round pieces that are not supported so something like the foam could support them but I don’t know if the foam would be able to penetrate that far past the supporting ply, unless I removed the ply. Food for thought anyway. Thanks again and take care.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 I found on Amazon some foam around 15€ (one can will be more than enough) and pistol with a long neck around 10€, I'm pretty sure a DIY shop around you could advise you on what to take for this 💪😎
Hi Sonia, the skill of both the helicopter and aeroplane pilots was incredible, those yellow planes scoop water out of the sea without stopping then carry the water back to the fire, they never land and just keep going. I too thought about the wildlife especially since it’s besting time. Very sad. 😔
Hi Andy, thank you for your comment, I’m sure you can make a decent job of your build with forethought and patience. I have reset the dimensions picture so it should work now. Thanks.
This is great! Thank you. I have just bought the same model but 4x4. What was the cost of this conversion in materials and can you advise the source of this? Thanks.
Hi Andrea, this was done in 2020 but the cost of everything to date including upgrades as seen in my other videos was about 16K, the materials were sourced from lots of places, mainly eBay and the furniture board was from magnum motorhomes in Grimsby. Hope that helps a little. Thanks.
Just curious. Why the small box section in-between your angle and the long rails? Could you not bolt the rail to the angle with T bolts and do away with the box sections
Hi, it was because one of the long rails was catching on the wifi receiver on the roof so I had to pack them out to make a bit of clearance. Thanks for watching.
Woke up to E3 error today 3/9/24. Heater has been fine since installed 12/9/22. Thankfully I bought spares when I installed so gonna give it a try..Thank you for sharing!!
Hi, currently converting a boxer H2L3 and curious what you did with the wheels, think they look good by the way. Did you buy 5 or will the factory spare do in the event of a flat/emergency? Good informative stuff on your channel, cheers.
Hi John, thanks for your comment. I just bought 4 wheels and tyres and kept the best factory wheel for the spare, although the rims are different diameters it would be good enough to get to the nearest repair shop. Take care and all the best. Ian.

Fantastic personable and practical video thank you and enjoy your travels!
Brilliant idea, I’ve got the fiat Ducati lwb and I want to do the same. Would you have the kjn part no.for all the parts? I’ve gone on the website and finding it a bit difficult to find the exact parts you have.
Hi there, the best thing to do is give them a call and they’ll help you get what you need. I agree that the site can be difficult to navigate so I called them up, no I don’t have any part numbers. All the best.
Hi. I have E-03 code coming up. I checked it in the manual, heater plug. Do toke it out, put 12v on it glowing red! I said ok maybe a loose connection. Put it back and the same fault comes up! Very annoying… I find new plug on eBay but can’t see replacement boards … Question: in the 14 months you have this heater how many days was it going nonstop?? Mine is about 3 months old and at least was going for 30-40 full days nonstop… until yesterday…
Hi Norbert, I tried to find a replacement board with the triangular plug to keep as a replacement if I needed to change it out one day but could only find the ones with the square plug !!! I probably used my heater every day in the 14 months but I have never used it non stop, I only ever use for maybe 1 or 2 hours maximum, I don’t know the answer to the problems you are having but for the low price that these heaters are it’s probably worth just fitting a new one if you can’t repair it. All the best.
Thank you so much. Yes I was thinking just get an other one… to be honest this was going sometimes nonstop for a week even… I take it apart again and see if I spot anything else like a loose plug or pin… Thank for your time again… Regards Norbert
@user-ju5os6qw7c Good luck Norbert, if you use them for long periods it might even be worth carrying a spare heater round with you just in case. Regards. Ian.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 unfortunately it was brand new as I said took it to bits yet again the round thing attached too the cable had come out can’t explain what it looks like but it was disconnected broken so then got my old heater took that to bits for spare parts swapped it around brill for five minuets then for some reason it won’t prime and I’m on my second pump I tried swapping the unit control box even and still won’t prime on screen is just shows a small clock no idea why then I unplugged tried priming many times no luck you can’t tell me a brand new pump doesn’t work when it did fine before and the old one did as well now both are not ticking nothing happens came up once disconnected which it wasn’t now nothing shows only this stupid little clock the pump symbol doesn’t come on I will never ever buy one of these things again this is the second one purchased just before Xmas other just two or 3 months prior it all started with air it something in the pipes now total disaster!!
@Genghis-Khan121 you’re having some real bad luck with these diesel heaters and I can’t blame you for losing faith in the Chinese ones. There is the option of getting something of better quality at a higher price point if you’re in a position to be able to do that? But I ain’t no expert on them and cannot offer any kind of explanation as to why you’re having these problems, all I can do is hope that you can find a solution somehow. Regards. Ian.
Hi Dear, I like your videos very much. As a RU-vid expert, I analyzed that your RU-vid video is not getting proper views and subscribers. The reason is that, video isn't SEO completed, no low competitive and ranked tag used & didn't optimize the channel with white-hate SEO. If these issues are resolved, then your RU-vid video views will increase. Do you know RU-vid algorithm which channel prefer and increase their video impression & search result first?

Well i have had this for about three hours ...2nd night of no rest in Montana no heat its 120 am and im in my truck trying to stay warm. I have had the heater working flawlessly for about 4 hours and now it's saying error 3 🤷
That’s not good 😩 I feel for you. I should try changing the glow plug first and then if that dosent work it’ll probably be the motherboard ( main circuit board ) I should buy two glow plugs just in case it happens again. Best of luck.
Thanks man, yeah I'm bumming, Mr Buddy is no go, electric heater no go, now this, just moved out of my camper got 12×24 shed I'm converting but can't seem to get warm going on month 2
i’m in the same boat and it’s below freezing. Upon very new installation of Maxpeedingsrod diesel heater, I get this error 3 right out of the box. Will try to change the glow plug and see what happens.
Hi i have the same problem i have changed the glow plug but im still having the same error code 03 do the motherboard is faulty or i just being scammed ?
Hi, if I were you I would change the motherboard out next, be careful to get one with the correct type of plug on the electrical connection as some are triangular and others square. All the best 👍
@@onevanandhisdog3641 these units are pure scrap firts time we used it and it was running like 10 minutes then shut off i changed the glow plug and still the same problem and im pretty sure amazon will not taking them back this is pure scamming :)
Sorry to hear that you’re having problems ☹️ I got mine from eBay in 2021 and apart from the glow plug issue it works great. It’s just a generic unbranded heater, a lot of people are using the maxspeedingrods ones now and I think this brand is trying to build a reputation and therefore provide a reliable unit but I don’t have any experience of them. Hope you get things sorted anyway 👍
