Thanks Steve! lol, yeah sometimes a piece or two go missing, usually a spring, screw or washer. I like the new body design, but this thin profile low gear still bothers me. lol
I cant speak to this saltwater reel but i remember not to long ago , shimano had to go back to brass gearing from steel micro module gearing because of chipping.
@@robb158 interesting. Never considered chipping. I know they’re able to cut brass along more precisely due to cutting tools not wearing so often. Okuma and Penn uses steel gears. Even Daiwa uses it on the Lexa HD. I’ve never heard of failure from brass but at the same time, they weren’t this thin nor not that high of lb drag applied to it. Only way for us to know is to put it to use. Hoping to hang one soon
@@jaaron2834 I got you on that, these are none critical tools. The cutters are for cutting mono/fluoro and still do the job today. The duck bills are for removing hooks. I just bought a pair of Doyle bolt cutters to remove rings from jigs. They’re doing the job. However, def look into Knipex for bolt cutters if you need to remove hooks from skin penetration.
@@FISHINGisApassionFL honestly don’t know. Got the line from a previous reel that I had removed, was new then. Very similar to Daiwa J braid metered. Alternated colors every 25ft but every same color is 100ft apart. So blue to next blue is 100ft. Cool stuff.
Solid work my brother!!!! Let me know when your ready for some art work from @skullandink!!! Love the videos. I miss fishing with you and your crew on the Aztec.
Looking forward to the tear down video. I have a set of gen1 and a 12 and 16. Waiting for the holiday sales to get the 2 larger sizes. Last year one of the tackle shop in New Jersey had a 25% off gift card after Christmas. I bought myself a $2,000 card at 25% off to buy all my new talica. Free shipping and no tax makes it a steal.
Hi Kevin, I do own spinning for my surf, freshwater and 1 single large spinner that's a Shimano Saragosa 14,000 size for offshore that I've owned for 2 seasons, but yet to catch anything on. I have it setup with a popper for long casts. Have yet to catch with it, but I wouldn't use it for big ones. I see lots of guys get worked on spinners mostly because you can't rest it on the rail like a conventional. If it's the only setup, start with it, but if you're after BFT, rent if you don't have conventionals. Hope that helps.
Great video man. Looks like a fun trip. A few weeks ago I used your Bite Leader video as a guideline to make my own crimped jig rigs, it was awesome so thanks so much for posting.
I love the zoom-in on the reel when you were getting bit! Nice touch! When you hook these fish on light line (25 lb) it's important to keep your thumb off of the spool and not clamp the line down on the rod. If they want to run, you have to let them. You have to rely on your drag, and with a star drag (vs 2-speed) you can usually get away with one or 2 clicks higher when they're straight up and down. The ones you got were nice! I went 10 for 14 out at Cortez a couple weeks ago. On 25 lb and small hooks there were some long fights. Luckily our last afternoon they were biting 40 and we finished up boat limits and left them biting!
Good eye and first person to note that. I 100% agree with you. I was using 25lb on my last 3day nov 2023 and I let them run, my fights were getting into the 30min range for 40-50lbers. Im sure you know the feeling from your recent trip. I knew these were a hair smaller so I was cheating with my thumb 😆. Glad you got to finish limits with 40lb, I think I haven't been bit on 40lb since 2022 even though it's one of my first setup to get wet 🤣
@@Seastheday88 thanks. This is going to be my second time fishing for tuna. Had a blast on the legend the first time. I’m already hooked. Hope you get them cows yourself. Tight lines
I honestly got the Torque hours before the trip, had to trust the braid the seller described, I only replaced the leader, lol. Finally completed my set for it. Thanks for watching, much appreciated!
@@williamhartsell6390 I’ve been wanting to pull on the Tac80 myself lol. If you’re in socal, check with Darin, his office is in Gardena. I believe he mentioned folks are welcome to pull on them there.
@Seastheday88 yeah I was down in long beach for a couple days visiting family. But it's on my list for next year. I scored a tac 80m at longfin. They didn't have the 80 though. I've used it for bluefin and yellowtail now. I like the way it loads up and has enough bend for braid to fluro. And I have uc, calstar, etc. I actually got my 80 direct from seeker deckhand style. Highly recommend 👌
Oh that Black Trq15 is sexy, if one came up for a good price I would snag it! Killer vid and really happy to see that rod in action! Next on my list for sure. I will definitely get it with the standard fuji reel seat like yours to save on the weight of the rod.
@@socalsteve22 Thank you Steve! it's a fun rod. I think it was the 4th I replaced in this class 😅. I can say this is the one and I'm officially done lol.
BIG BIG difference on the TWing models is the double ball bearing pinion gear. Really makes a great difference on aligning the gears and THAT is a huge upgrade in any way you look at it.
All these are way big for pike fishing in Scandinavia, here a 300 size is most used, and very often a 200. I have only 200 reels, have had Tatula 300 but is unnecessary weight, the 200 or Coastal 200 i use is capable of handling the pike and lure weight i cast which is ~4,5oz. Also have a Curado 201M, latest gen, also using it for the same, only downside is the smaller spool, only using 0,20-0,25 braid on it, coastal 200 uses 0,30 Berkley X9 on both, best line i used by far. Got all the S8S benefits but doesn't hold water nearly as much as S8s do.
@@OutofluckpikerMJK they are indeed much larger, the sportfishing boats will say these reels are too small if we’re chasing BFT but just right for most YT. Like you, it’s good to have some variety options. All fun stuff. Thanks for watching 🙌
I never thought I would use that heavy, still haven't fished for sharks or anything in the marlin/striper category. Just blessed we have offshore tuna still.
@@Seastheday88 I just set my rig up. With thread lock and 130lbs leader. I never went that high before but for sturgeon 65lbs max. I hear night time bites would need 200+lbs man this new to me.
@@Yakplanet_tv it's wild and still new to me too. Captains will advise that fish can't see so go heavier, but I like that 200lb mark. Sometimes the fish will swallow the jig, so it's all for chaffing protection.
Hey bro! Love the videos! I am looking for some advice.. I am a SoCal fisher like yourself and am looking to get a baitcaster mainly for surface irons, colt snipers, topwaters etc. I am between a Shimano Tranx, Daiwa Lexa and the Prorex. I'll be spooling with 65lb braid and using a 8'2 rod.. Which of the three would you recommend? I have been eyeing the Prorex most as of recent.
Thanks for that! For most line cap, the 500 sizes will be it. The Tranx 500 is a bit more refined with double dog. I still have both and go for Tranx for heavier and would use the Lexa 500 if it’s smaller school size. Hope that helps
lol. I have the 300. It’s my beater and somehow it still take a beating. Have to admit I’m tempted on a 400 for the price, just too much tackle at the moment
@@nancyn3863 I actually added a Talica 20 to my line up recently. I went with the VISX as like their lower gear. Look into the new Talica A model. They should be releasing soon. Their 20 and 25 size comes with a new low gear. The 25 will come with a nice t-bar handle. I may add one of these during holiday sales.
Thank you! Could you please write a review if you wind up buying it? Possibly with comparisons on the visx 16 on what your pick would be for 100lb set up. Thanks again!
1. The Lexa freespool disengaged with strong casts. Even when I moved the handle to mitigate this. I sent it in to Daiwa to get it fixed. Did the same thing and eventually broke again. It was a major headache to work with the Daiwa repair team too. Never had a single problem with my Tranx 500pg. Sent it in for servicing. Apparently a bearing needed replacing. It was working fine when I sent it. Shimano replaced all the bearings and serviced it. For free. Just because they wanted to, I guess. Screw Daiwa. Never going to buy anything from them ever again. Theyre like the Mitsubishi of fishing gears. Theyre a big company but their cars are junk. Shimano is like the Lexus of fishing gear. Nice, high end, and dependable.
@@harold1733 I honestly read the same results from a couple of other Daiwa owners as well. Let’s just say I only own Daiwa baitcasters and that’s it. The rest are Penn and Shimano for my star drag and 2spd conventionals
@@AustinGeorge-c8z I’ve since replaced that rod. I used it as a flyline setup during that time. Really nice blank. My replacements are a combination of UC and Seeker. 6480 lineup. Check out 310Rodworks TTR. They are manufactured by UC for 310Rodworks, a new 6480 with graphite and glass blend.
Hey there,.. Great reel..! I have 400 WIN HS-P spooled up w/30lb Berkeley Fireline Crystal You said this reel is primarily for freshwater,.. but I've only used it in the salt... no problem ever.. after each use, I soak it in warm soapy water for an hour, and then it gets rinsed a few times as well .. I used it today at the beach for Stripers ( got skunked).. lol Interesting that you showed a short clip of a Muskie ... well, I used my TI telescopic 10'6"muskie rod in the salt and I have say, its like a scaled-down surf rod and cast like it too,.. I emptied more than half the spool on my Lexa.... about 100yard cast ... very smooth impressive performace from this reel,... thinking about getting the Lexa 500 HD 8:1 Cool video 👍😎🤙
@@jaaron2834 thanks boss. Glad you’re putting it to good use. Daiwa marketed it that way. Very interesting. I’ll see it on charters and everyone uses it fine. I tried the Muskie rods too. Really nice with lots of backbone. The 500 is nice for that extra capacity 👍
@@Seastheday88 I've seen other videos you create🤙I like the one how you take care of your reels after using them in the salt... over time , salt can and will affect stainless parts as well because nothing is forever ... I do the same for my vintage Abu reels .. they look and perform like new and they're all highly tuned. All the newbies to your channel should pay close attention 🤙😎👍
@@nancyn3863 I haven’t seen them personally. But would love to crack one open if I got my hands on it. I was on a charter with someone and he was using his 60n. Brought up a 150lber
@@nancyn3863 I don’t push beyond 20lb as I’ll use my VISX in that case for it. I can feel the pressure on handle when you set drags higher and the side load doesn’t seem to take it well.
@@nancyn3863 the VISX20 is near identical spool to this Fathom 60n. However it’s also ridiculously heavier at over 54oz. I set my VISX16 around 25lb of drag, for 100lb line.
www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/20visx.pdf This is the schematics for the Penn VISX. It essentially from the handle bar and everything to the right of it
How much drag can you realistically get on the fathom fishing knife and sinker? Would this reel be ok with some 100 mc? Some dude said he gets 30. At full and 350 yards of 100 is all you need to kill a cow? What’s your opinion?
I personally wouldn’t push it for 100lb. I’d fish it for 60lb ideally. You’ll go through pinion bearings faster if pushed higher. You’ll notice there is more resistance tension winding on Strike without anything hooked up. That’s due to higher drag and max pressure than the reel is able to handle. Some people have got away with it. Just needs more service in between.

Hi. Sorry. Just mostly do it for personal use. What are you looking to do. I have easier recommendations on the handle, instagram user @Blackflag_fishing has a plug and play handle arm
