Jacks are for lifting and lowering . QUALITY stands, installed correctly, are for holding. We have had new stands purchased from a reputable tool vendor fail inspections by qualified personnel. The best stands use a pin through a hole system that can be dislodged accidentally.

In August 2020, Walmart recalled nearly 14,000 Hyper Tough® 2-Ton Jack Stands because they can collapse and cause severe injury or death. The recalled jack stands were sold at Walmart nationwide. The welding defect was discovered in the Pittsburgh 3-Ton steel jack stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands. Harbor Freight is also offering refunds for other Pittsburgh 3-Ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 56372 and 57308) as well as the Pittsburgh 6-Ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56368, 56369 and 56370) and Pittsburgh 12-Ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56374 and 56375).

The guy who had the accident more than likely applied the jackstand incorrectly. Although the jackstands I use are the traditional type with various holes and a bolt. In any case, as others have said, always have backup for the car to fall on. Such as wheels, car ramps or lumber. Let someone know in the house that you're working on a car and for them to come check periodically. I also keep my phone in my pocket...lol.

I didn’t track this very well. Can someone help me. Maybe I need to understand the situation of the guy who got crushed. But aren’t we just talking about dead weight. ( no pun intended). 😅 How does the hydraulic situation he uses in this video relate to it?

Never happened to me but I have quite an imagination and paranoia so I only buy stands with the secondary safety pin AND always have a floor jack or 2 to support the car along with the jack stands,

When I use jack stands. I always use a floor jack as a back up, or safety on the side of the car I'll be under. I just lightly touch the floor jack to the frame after I set the car on jack stands.

Your going to tell me that a person can hit that leaver hard enough to make the jack stand fall with the weight of the car/truck on the stand, that's BULL SHIT 🐂💩💩💩 move on to something more entertaining

The weight needs to be constant. The way you tested this you created space between the jack stand and the hydraulic press. Once the weight is applied from a true load it takes an effort to bump those. The ratcheting ones are the worst, but they come with safety pins.

well you did say the guy lift the porche off his head.. so he prob can produce enough force to make the stand fail.. strong mefer.... that's why i always use two jack statnds.. make sure the jack is still engaged and place tires under the car and use wheel chalks...

Naaaa…..Even a very safe person can make a mistake. I’m a professional mechanic for 25 years and I almost killed myself last year using drive-on ramps at home. In the aftermath I kept asking myself how I could be so stupid but familiarity breeds contempt, coupled with fatigue and frustration was a recipe that almost ended me. The worst injury I had ever sustained prior was a smashed fingernail. That includes working on heavy equipment for several years. The attitude you display is actually an unsafe one. It’s arrogant. “I can’t get hurt because I’m not a dumbass”.

When putting a vehicle in jack stands, hydraulic stands or whatever, always put blocks under the vehicle for the same height. One can never be too careful. Or put bricks 🧱

Definitely opens our eyes and makes working on cars more dangerous. There’s got to be more to the story for that thing to fail. Unless the manufacturer is to blame on that specific stand it was probably defective? Lawsuit comes to mind.. hope that dude makes a speedy recovery but ouch 🤕 Yea I’d put spare tires under the car and have at least 1 manual pump jack assisting as well.

You need to be as safe as you can under vehicle, so even if you have 4 jack stands and you only really need 2, use all four and back it up with trolley jack and as a precaution I put my wheel under as well, (only if I remove it)

Thanks for the video. I always have the utmost respect for the weight of my car and always use extra precautions. That is Jack stands (with extra load margins) + floor jack + wheel or other smaller jack stands. Otherwise when I'm under there fighting with stubborn bolts, that wouldn't be fun. Stay safe.

Never just trust just a stand, always have a backup plan for the stand even if it's quality support next like a tire, floor jack, blocks etc. good video. Never had stand fail. Not made or use for working under vehicle. Though people do it.

You were 'levering' with a length of bar under the handle. That is entirely different than just accidentally hitting it from underneath. Those stands were also likely the ones recalled from HF for having a pawl that does not set fully engaged into the tooth of the stand. The end of the handle if seated correctly should rest in the locked position on the stand itself or very close to it.
